"Jessica Hopper"

"Emily Lacy's 'I'm Here Babe' is perfect and romantic and narcotic folk, I like that hazy foil on her pure country girl clarion voice; it is good on repeat repeat repeat." - tiny.abstractdynamics.org

Bio

In the tradition of DIY Musicians like Daniel Johnston, Kimya Dawson, and Jeffrey Lewis, Emily Lacy is a completely self-taught, "untrained" artist, who has accumulated 11 home recorded albums in 4 years. Having a background as an experimental filmmaker, she took up music at age 22 and began documenting her process of experiencing and writing music literally from the ground up, as at first her only means of recording sound was via a camcorder. She would place the video camera on the floor and it would record the sounds that came out of her guitar and mouth. From these primitive means she began to really create her own musical language, as her own songs and improvisations were the only things she physically could get her hands (and head) to play. 5 years later she found herself on tour with Jeffrey Lewis and then later Dr. Dog and Delta Spirit. It's clear in her performances and recordings that music reveals itself to her as some mysterious divine force, coming seemingly from an unknown space, as she spent her first 22 years without music, and now it's the core of her existence, now it's truly the lens through which she views the Universe.
