"Car"

Recent favorite Emily Reo just sent over this fantastic cover of Built To Spill's "Car". I loved this song in high school so I was definitely thrilled. Emily gives it her typical slowed down tape-organ sound, while her vocals bring the proper emotion to the song. I'm sure BTS would be proud. - Get Off the Coast (by Jheri Evans)

"Blue Canoe"

Here's a lovely new tune from Emily Reo. I can't put into words how much I love her songs. They're just magnificent. - Get Off the Coast (by Jheri Evans)

"Touching The Void"

he lovely Emily Reo will release a cassette EP this summer called Witch Mtn. We assume she is a big Dwayne Johnson fan. Or maybe she is the little girl from the old Disney film, the one with paranormal powers who can unlock any door by touch, communicate with animals and transmit messages by ultrasonic speech audible only to other alien kids. That sounds about right. - Pinglewood (by Scott Wright)

"There's Nothing Wrong With Love"

There’s a dangling gap between Emily’s voice, her hynotic keyboards, those glistening bells, and wherever our ears are supposed to be during these enchanting few minutes that makes the danger in this jam all the more appealing. Built To Spill has always deserved a massage this enticing. Catch Emily at Total Bummer fest with a bunch of our pals, jealous we can’t make it. - The FMLY (by Noah Klein)

"Emily Reo"

Emily Reo is a girl from Orlando who plays organ keys, vibe keys, guitars, wooden flutes etc etc, floor tom, fake drums and kitchen utensils according to her Myspace. I'll just add that is one of those acts that thinks that less is more, that simplicity is the way to go and you don't need superfluous arrangements if you can communicate what you want with your voice, two organ keys and a drumstick. Her songs are closer to melancholy than sadness and her sound could remind you of a lo-fi Beach House although even more minimal. She's just released her first compilation of songs via A Dracula Records called Minha Gathinha that you can get either on tape or CDr (again not vinyl...) and you can listen to covers of Beach House, St Vincent and Built To Spill on her Myspace. - Seven Noises (by David Amela)

"Emily Reo - Witch Mtn"

| Edit Post

Emily Reo's tape Minha Gatinha and her other tracks have been on repeat here in my house. I absolutely love her music and think her voice and minimal compositions are really beautiful. Since I last posted about her here, she's been busy preparing a new tape EP called Witch MTN that is going to be out on the 24 of May on Breakfast of Champs, a small label that's previously put out stuff by Cloud Nothings or Truman Peyote. Not sure about the number of songs or final track list but it will definitely include the song you can download below.

In other news, she also has a new song in the compilation WGWB & Friends Volume Two (WGWB stands for White Guys With Beards). The compilation is free to download here but you can also get a copy of the limited to 100 tapes or even an exclusive and personalised CDR. The compilation includes new and exclusive tracks from the likes of The Letter Box Project, Memoryhouse, Gobble Gobble or Golden Girls, a total of 20 tracks, and the money made from the physical copies will go to help sponsor future releases of Wonder Beard Tapes, so it's really a good cause.

Emily Reo will soon start touring the Northeast USA, so if you live around there you'll be lucky if you can see her.

"Emily Reo - Car"

Emily Reo just sent over this delightful new cover of Built To Spill’s “Car.” Drone and dreamy organ carry this jam as light gentle blips slowly escape from the background. And the voice!

It’s a beauty, plain and simple.

You can buy Emily’s album Minha Gatinha on cassette or cd over at A Dracula Records. It features the wonderful track “Metal On Your Skin” which is worth the sticker price just by itself. - White Guys With Beards (by Brian Wood)

"Emily Reo - Metal On Your Skin"

mp3: Emily Reo - Metal On Your Skin

I name-dropped this Emily Reo track in yesterday’s post.

I just can’t stop listening to it, or the entire album for that matter. When that happens I feel rather greedy for not sharing.

Enjoy having it take over your day (in the best way possible) too. - White Guys With Beards (by Brian Wood)

"Emily Reo - Blue Canoe"

mp3: Emily Reo - Blue Canoe

The ever-so-wonderful Emily Reo sent me another new track today, the hypnotic and hazy “Blue Canoe.” It might just be my favorite of hers yet.

Emily is currently hard at work writing and recording new material for her next release. She will also have a new jam for everyone (including myself) to gush over on the upcoming WGWB Volume 2 compilation. Get excited.

Also, for those in the Florida-ish area, Emily and a whole mess of amazing people will be performing March 27th at Total Bummer, a weekend-long festival in Gainesville that has me wishing I wasn’t a New Englander. If you are in the area or looking for a post-sxsw spillover you cannot go wrong. - White Guys With Beards (by Brian Wood)

"WGWB & Friends Vol. 2"

11. EMILY REO - WITCH MTN

I can’t put into words how much I enjoy Emily Reo. Just listen and you’ll be as tongue tied as I am. This track may get a part two, I sure hope it does. - White Guys With Beards (by Brian Wood)

"Emily Reo - Above Ground and a Golden Cloud"

Video: Emily Reo - Above Ground And A Golden Cloud

Jheri from Get Off The Coast makes the illest video collages and, from the sounds of it, is set to release the latest in a great string of compilations/mixes at the end of April.

Here’s his latest video collage, made for personal favorite Emily Reo’s newest tune “Above Ground And A Golden Cloud,” which will feature on this month’s GOTC mix as well as Emily’s forthcoming Witch Mtn EP.

If you haven’t already, you can hear the title track from Witch Mtn on the WGWB & Friends Volume 2 tape. - White Guys With Beards (by Brian Wood)

"Emily Reo - Witch Mtn Pt 2 (ft. Philip Seymour Hoffman)"

mp3: Emily Reo - Witch Mtn Pt. 2 (Ft. Philip Seymour Hoffman)

Just in case you missed it, Emily Reo’s newest cassette EP Witch Mtn is now shipping via the fine folks at Breakfast of Champs.

Here’s part two of the title track that debuted on WGWB & Friends #2. This time around Emily enlisted the help of my man P.S.H. to take it to another stratosphere. I think you’ll agree they make quite the pair.

"Race to Witch Mtn"

FMLY and Breakfast of Champs darling Emily Reo just underwent Get Off The Coast treatment in the form of a video for her new tune “above ground and a golden cloud”. The song itself is one of my favorites right now and 4evz, and we’re so stoked on copping her Witch Mtn cassette asap from Breakfast of Champs.

Emily Reo – Car (Built To Spill cover)

Speaking of BoC, the mini-tour this weekend was a blast so thank you to everyone in Boston, Philly, Brooklyn, and everyone else who came out, supported the event, cut our hair, let us crash on your floor, or listened to the sounds we brought with us on the road. Birthdays is rockin’ a split cassette with Vacation Dad, Truman Peyote can do no wrong and we need a whole separate post to update everyone on their releases, and Philip Seymour Hoffman is about to drop some bombs to say the least.

And Emily Reo will be on tour with Dark Sea of Awareness, Rabbit Punch, Oh Fortuna, and Attached Hands in May so if anyone on the east coast can help her set up a show please get in touch! - The FMLY (by Noah Klein)

"Unveiled: Emily Reo’s Witch Mtn ep"

Above is the first peek at Emily Reo’s homecollaged cassette cover for her Breakfast of Champs tape, and word on the street is that it has a collab with Philip Seymour Hoffman. Shit is dooooope. “Blue Canoe” will be on the EP, and “Tiny Animals” is off of Minha Gathinha.

"Get Off The Coast’s Amazing Emily Reo Video"

Right here’s the dream team. Mah boi Jhrei “The Fixer” Evans makes a variety of awesome collage art that you can see plastered about Get Off the Coast, as well as on his Cargo Collective portfolio. He’s now moving into video territory and just finished up putting together a collection of quirky and rather moving archival footage for #1 hitmaker of 2K10 Emily Reo and her ghostly “Above Ground and a Golden Cloud” (my favorite song I’ve heard thus thar). Both are raw, so go throw this all up on yr. social networks and shit! - The Decibel Tolls (by Kenny Bloggins)

"Emily Reo: "Metal On Your Skin""

On a calm day, after the final winds of a storm of creative excess had passed, a wounded mind seeking sanctuary. A simple melody and a cushion of key strokes, wood on metal, echos of struck drums to keep time. Unwound yarn in a pile on the floor, a candy coated path with the clean rubbed off and the dirty exposed.

Emily Reo, from Orlando, Florida, brings a haunt of a tune to our ears today, “Metal On Your Skin.” Think: Beach House, Lo-Fi, wind. - Quiet Color (by Kevin Diamond)

"A New Kind of Honeybee: Emily Reo"

I don’t think this bee stings. In fact, honeybee’s never sting. They drink nectar out of flowers and then make honey comb and honey with their huge family. What a sweet, sweet image…

Emily Reo sings “Honeybee” and it feels like a movie where you’re sitting in a hazy window, gazing out at a world that is ready for you. The sun is shining and inviting. It’s almost a throwback track, to the 50s. A soundtrack for ironic ambivalence, maybe.

Reo is from Orlando, Florida, and “Honeybee” is off her new album Minha Gatinha, available here. The whole album features fuzzy songs, but they are all different kinds of songs. Some are pop, some are ballads, some feel like memories and some feel like the future. Honeybee is a future track…despite the familiar feeling.

- Microphone Memory Emotion (by Georgia Kral)

"New Emily Reo: Blue Canoe"

Haunting and arresting– that’s pretty much Emily Reo‘s trademark. And this new track she just sent me, “Blue Canoe,” is no exception. The music almost sounds like you could be on an amusement park ride– a haunted house ride. Like that scene in Amelie where she is turned on by the man with the book of photos when he whispers menacingly into her ear.

Organ, drum machine and muffled vocals end up being a potent mix– you’re going to need to play this over and over again.

Reo hails from Orlando, Florida, land of Disney and palm trees. Where does she get her influences from? Emily- how are you inspired to make dark music like this? If anyone should be making fuzzed out beach pop, its you. Right? - Microphone Memory Emotion (by Georgia Kral)

"Dreamy Emily Reo"

She’s back. She never left, and kinda just arrived in my headspace, but whatever, none of that matters. What matters is that Emily Reo exists and she makes these dreamy soundscapes that don’t get boring as this music often can. She does repetition like a pro. It’s probably the perfectly in tune and properly mixed as a haunting back sound vocals that make “Witch Mtn” a song you’ll want to listen to on repeat.

It’s off Reo’s upcoming cassette EP out this summer. Watch Myspace for info and northeast tourdates this summer. - Microphone Memory Emotion (by Georgia Kral)

"Shattered Elastic"

Emily Reo from Orlando Florida makes drum beats that sound like heart palpitations, singing that cuts like melancholy in a bathroom, and casio tones that twinkle like bats’ eyes in a cave. Her sweet drone pop songs like ‘Above Ground and a Golden Cloud’ are ethereal and dreamy, but dark like sinking ships. Reeking of isolation and intimacy, her music portrays the pondering of an imaginative and delightful girl. Her myspace has her listed as playing organ, vibe keys, guitars, wooden flutes, floor tom, fake drums and kitchen utensils and she creates an enveloping atmosphere with them all. New song ‘Witch Mtn’ incorporates glossy organs like those heard in Beach House and haunting prettiness the likes of Grouper. One of the most wonderful things about Emily Reo is her forthrightness; she doesn’t come across as self effacing or self conscious. Her songs are enunciated with a kind of spirited determination that, while partially hidden behind murky vibes, is ever-present. You can’t imagine her downcast and shoe-gazing; her music is charismatic and involving. ‘Blue Canoe’ has a dancing organ jam that’s upbeat in its quietly heaving, cooing delivery, and her awesome cover of Built To Spill’s ‘Car’ is an emotional, epic teen dream ballad that threatens to surpass the original. ‘Tell Us All’ is more playful in a morbid, twisted way. She’s opened for Cold Cave and Phosphorescent, and has plans to embark on some north-east US dates in late May. This comes ahead of the release of the Witch Mtn cassette EP this northern summer and planned collaboration with Philip Seymour Hoffman. "Witch Mtn: Emily Reo"

Here's another woozy heartbreak anthem from Emily Reo. Following on from a self promoted set of tracks last year, the 'Witch Mtn' EP loops beautifully with Emily's hushed vocals floating under the fuzz of fake drums, smatterings of floor toms, organ and the odd reed thin flute. It's beautifully pitched, catchy rather than repetitive and should once and for all get Emily noticed for her own giddy melodies rather than those covers of St Vincent and Beach House.

Regular visitors to MM will know how much we have been captivated by the charming and unique Emily Reo.

Having already shared the title track from her forthcoming Witch Mtn EP with us, she has been kind enough to drop us another track from the EP – this time it is the wonderful Above Ground And A Golden Cloud.

Enjoy and we’ll bring details of the EP release as soon as we have them.

"Above Ground and a Golden Cloud"

Neu Magazine just brought our attention to this beautiful new track from Orlando, FL-based Emily Reo, the first off her forthcoming Witch Mtn EP. Imagine Grouper singing along with a drum machine, a baby mobile and the organs off Beach House’s debut album and you’ll have some idea of what territory this song’s charting. Seductive, yes, but it wisely subverts its own dreaminess with a certain lullabied foreboding that keeps the mood slightly unknowable, demanding further scrutiny and revisitation.

"Emily Reo Releases Witch Mountain"

As anyone who reads MM will know we are big fans of Emily Reo and have been eagerly awaiting the release of her EP Witch Mountain. The five track cassette is (of course) as dreamily seductive and captivating as we were hoping. There are fuzzy, distorted vocals, loops and washed out synths but always carried along by a lovely melody and the overall result is wonderful.

Best of all, it also has a subversive side that provides more than just a hint of the unexpected and the intriguing feeling that maybe she is slyly laughing behind her hand at a joke no-one else gets – least of all you.

"Have You Heard?"

Emily Reo’s debut, Minha Gathinha, has stirred much excitement in indie blogger circles over the past few months. The Floridian dream-pop princess is fuzzy enough to entice lo-fi fans, and yet with a charisma that thankfully sees her sidestep the genre’s associations with awkwardness.

Her songs are melodiously loomed and sweetly crafted, with threads of vibraphone over muffled layers of organs and drone. On debut single ‘Witch Mtn’ her sweet, childlike vocals sound like a forest nymph luring you along the sandy strips of Beach House and into Pocahaunted’s psychedelic woodland.

In fact, this morbid prettiness is increasingly earning her the label of ‘hauntological’; a rather vague but quickly spider-webbing genre of spooky retro electronic music, pioneered by obscure UK label Ghost Box. Think Goldfrapp’s Felt Mountain and you’re almost there.

Current single ‘Above Ground and a Golden Cloud’ is the sound from favourite childhood music box gone rusty in the rain, and it’s this air of fragility that makes her so memorable; Reo sounds both haunting and haunted.

Minha Gathinha is available to download from her MySpace now.

"EMILY REO – CAR (BUILT TO SPILL COVER)"

Seen this around on blogs and liked it so I thought we should post it too. Ever wondered what it’d sound like if Tickley Feather was a member of Beach House? Me neither, but I’m guessing it would sound something like this. Check out two tracks from Orlando, Florida’s Emily Reo, the wonderful ‘Metal on Your Skin’ and a cover that doesn’t suck (!). You can stream her album on last.fm and buy it from A Dracula Records.

"WITCH MTN"

The dreamy Orlando-based musician Emily Reo is blessing us with two new tracks off of her upcoming EP, Witch Mtn and Blue Canoe. Witch Mtn, in particular, also happens to be on the White Guys With Beards Cassette Compilation.

Emily’s soft voice and ‘drone pop’ instrumentals creates a certain ethereal sound that helps one envision what dreams ‘sound’ like, it is this combination that separates Emily from others. Witch Mtn proves this inference true, while Blue Canoe presents a more insentient mood. I’ve also posted a video of her doing Beach House’s Turtle Island below (assisted by the Ukulele), it’s kind of dated but nonetheless still really good. If you are a Beach House fan you will no doubt dig.

"Emily Reo - "Witch Mtn""

Emily Reo - "Witch Mtn". At the top of a mountain, the air gets thin. L perches on a rock, eating a granny smith apple. She breathes in shallow inhalations. Across the gap, there is mist and sharp spires. From her pack, she takes a transistor radio. It is the size of a dental floss container. She unravels the earphones and slips these on. The sun will soon begin to sink. L hears mist and sharp spires. She swivels the tuner with her thumb. The voices are thin. The melodies are like spring-water. The first thing I noted when meeting the Florida-based songwriter was that the second I pulled my casio out of a bag, her eyes were locked to it. What model is it? Could she see the samples? No surprise that her spare and haunting melodies rest on the vintage oom-pahs and organ drolls of a late 80s model.

"Emily Reo's Haunted Graffiti"

Sunny good-times Orlando doesn’t necessarily seem the type of milieu that begets sequestered and supremely haunting lo-fi. But it did, and Emily Reo is decidedly in a league of her own. Simple synths, swells of tape warmth, junky drum machines, a touch of vibraphone, and distorted, melodic, post doo wop vocals certainly evokes Tickley Feather or a totally fucked version of Beach House. However, Reo adopts a more cathedral-tinged approach, demonstrated on “Metal For Your Skin” – a song too expansive for the bedroom. “Tell Us All” features a masterful incorporation of the evasive “circus waltz” that you no longer hear much in skewed pop music. "A Cove to Call My Own"

After a year and a half, this blog finally seems to be at the point where the MySpace electro DJs have removed me from their mailing lists and their void is being replaced by personal emails from artists I actually want to write about. I awoke to one such email last week and have been eager to share her sound with you.

Emily Reo cites Kria Brekkan and Beach House as influences, which means this week makes for the perfect timing to introduce you to her music. Hollow and oceanic feeling, Reo’s music sounds like it was recorded in a dark cove nestled along some desolate stretch of unnamed beach. Droning organ, tentative childlike snare clacks and distant vocals full of longing characterize a lo-fi sound best listened to in hi-fi. More than Beach House, Brekkan, or her other cited influences (Best Coast, Julian Lynch and Tickley Feather), Reo’s music reminds me of the murky, introspective reflections of A Gal.

While I personally prefer the style of Emily Reo’s original compositions, her voice shines in a different light on YouTube (accompanied by friend David Levesque) via two acoustic covers — Beach House’s Turtle Island and St. Vincent’s Marry Me. - Creamteam.tv (by V)

"Metal On Your Skin"

Emily Reo makes soft drone pop reminiscent of the winter ocean and Pan's Labyrinth. "Emily Reo: “Metal On Your Skin”"

Emily Reo has been getting a lot of love from music bloggers that I trust, but whose tastes don’t always strongly overlap with mine. Turns out, though, that this is one of the times where we can all agree. Get Off the Coast loves her, the Decibel Tolls thinks she’s rad and now I’m on board too.

Maybe it’s because I don’t normally listen to too much in this vein, but my brain immediately leaps to early Beach House as the closest comparison for Reo’s “Metal On Your Skin.” It’s a light drone pop song with airy female vocals. - You Ain't No Picasso (by Matt Jordan)

Bio

Emily Reo is an experimental/noise pop musician from Orlando, Florida. Her songwriting exhibits ethereal rhythmic pop qualities reminiscent of early Beach House combined with haunting echoey melodies and lo-fi recordings that come straight from the bedroom. The culmination of her influences and compositional technique creates a sound that is uniquely dark, distant and memorable.
