BandFolkAdult Contemporary

Emily Strand, whether with her backing band, The Town, or solo, creates what critics call "smart, confident, organic Pop." Strand's skillful writing won her the grand prize in the 2004 John Lennon International Songwriting Competition in the category of folk.

Biography

Emily Strand is a songwriter/guitarist/singer "who specializes in smart, confident and organic Pop songs." (Cincinnati CityBeat) Strand writes in a style that is reminiscent of James Taylor's melodies and Joni Mitchell's jazz sensibilities, with a vocal delivery akin to Aimee Mann’s: fragile and emotive. A Cincinnati native, Strand plays regionally out of Dayton, OH, with her dynamic and roots-rocking band, The Town. Made up of Cincinnati veterans Shawn Elsbernd, Scott Hacker, Ashley Shepherd and Whitney Barricklow, The Town won the top prize of "Tri-State's Best Unsigned Band" in modern rock radio station's 97X (now WOXY.com) "97Xposure" competition at the band's inception in 2003. Strand and The Town were also named as one of the Top Ten acts of 2004 in a year end critics' poll in CityBeat.

Strand's talent for songwriting has not gone unrecognized. Her melancholy waltz "Lou" took the prestigious Grand Prize in the Folk category in the 2004 John Lennon International Songwriting Competition. "Lou" was chosen out of thousands of entries from all around the world by an Executive Committee of judges featuring such noted performers as Elton John, Judy Collins, Foo Fighters and Björk among many others. "Lou" can be found on her second independent LP, Delay in the Connection, released in 2004. Delay in the Connection was recorded in Nashville with producer Eric Fritsch (Scott Miller, Upside Downside) and has garnered much critical acclaim. It was listed among Cincinnati CityBeat's hottest album picks for summer 2004, and was also named one of the top 10 local releases by both the Dayton Daily News and the Cincinnati Post.

In summer 2006, Strand and the Town toured the region in support of their new self-titled EP with Cincinnati producer Ashley Shepherd (Blessid Union of Souls, Brian Lovely). The press has called the EP "a charmer" (Dayton City Paper), and "elegant... richly produced... with lush and intricate vocal arrangements" (Cincinnati Post).

Strand and the Town continue to perform regionally at campuses, clubs and festivals. The band consistently delivers a tight, talented, energy-packed performance of well-written progressive-pop tunes. They are the perfect opener for national touring acts ranging from rock to pop to folk to alternative, but are polished and charismatic enough for the headliner spot.

Lyrics

Lou

Written By: Emily Strand

Guess we spend a moment too long
Laughing out loud
Singing that song
Ain’t supposed to miss you this much
If you only knew
The weight of your touch

But you’ve got that old faded photograph
That you hold on to

Oh, Lou
What do we do
Cause you feel it too
I know you do

Woke up in the night and you were gone
Did she call your name,
Leading you on?
Have to say I knew that you would
Afraid you might stay
Afraid that you should

But you’ve got that old faded photograph
That you hold on to

Oh, Lou
What do we do
Cause you feel it too
I know you do
Oh, but Lou
We’ll make it through
This may come true
But we’ll make it through

Sometimes I wonder
If it’s easier to be alone
And then you come home
With your joy and your light
You make it alright
You make it alright

Walking in the graveyard alone
They give me advice
Those names on the stones
They tell me
Life is like a dream then it’s gone
And you don’t have long
No, we don’t have long

Carry Away My Heart

Written By: Emily Strand

You shook my arm right out of socket
The first time that we met
I never will forget
You saw your dreams down in my pockets
You turned me inside-out
It was troubling, what fell out

Baby there’s more here than what you’ve
Always been looking for

You carry away my heart
Without all of these other parts
Do you see me for dreaming
Or see me to understand?

You swim right out into the ocean
With no fear or regret
While I just get my toes wet
We could drown in this emotion
Like a dream that didn’t last
There’s no future with no past

(chorus)

(solo)

You know I love this kind of weather
The leaves are slow to burn
The cold slow to return
We could fall like this forever
And never hit the ground
If we love just what we’ve found

‘Cause baby there’s more so much more than
All we’ve been looking for

You carry away my heart
Without all of these other parts
Do you see me for dreaming
Don’t see me for dreaming

(chorus)

You carry away my heart
Without all of these other parts
Do you see me for dreaming
Or see me to understand?
