"Tom's Music Review: Emily Wenham - Catalyst for love EP"

These days our music knowledge all depends on who is being played on the radio, TV videos or being put in all the tabloids that we keep forgetting about the underground music scene where it all starts for an artist. Luckily in Brisbane we have one of the best local music scenes in Australia with a lot of amazing talent emerging. Emily Wenham is one of Brisbane's rising stars and a true undiscovered talent with a beautiful voice, catchy songs and a unique sound. So who is Emily Wenham? She is a singer song-writer from the Sunshine Coast incorporating an acoustic guitar, bass guitar and an amazing soulful voice which gives the overall sounds a funk vibe.

Her EP Catalyst for Love is out now and it is an amazing debut for a great local artist which is better than a lot of so called professional artists including the latest release from Kylie Minogue. The EP includes 5 original songs written by Emily and Brad Wenham which include some catchy choruses and lyrically standout moments. Her vocals on this EP are absolutely beautiful and you ask yourself why hasn't she been signed yet? Which I can't find an answer to myself because she is an absolute talent and someone who has the full package. Standout tracks on the EP for myself are the insanely catchy "What if" and "Another Angle". Make sure you check out Emily Wenham on www.emilywenham.com and www.myspace.com/emilywenhammusic and purchase her music because she is well worth listening to. 4 stars - Northlakes Messenger

Take the sonic ingredients of an earthy rhythmical acoustic guitar blended with the progressive funk fusion slappings of a 6 string bass, combine them with emotive soulful vocals, mix in a solid backbeat, add a pinch of Latin and the slightest reggae aroma, bake on stage for 60 mins and you will have the eclectic juicy flavours of The Emily Wenham Band.

Emily and Brad Wenham form the creative heartbeat of the band, drawing from influences as widely varied as Ani DiFranco, Victor Wooten, The Waifs, Tribal Tech, Fiona Apple and Michael Franti, to name a few. Combined, Emily and Brad have extensive festival experience performing all over the country at events such as Woodford Folk Festival, Noosa Jazz Festival, Melbourne Electric Jazz Festival, Margaret River Wine Festival, Adelaide Fusion Festival, Caloundra Music Festival, Caxton St Seafood festival and the Hervey Bay Australia Day Festival.

2009 was a year of acceleration for the Emily Wenham Band seeing them compete in the Caloundra Music Festival Battle of the Bands and scoring for themselves the first band onstage status on the opening night of the festival. At the same time the band was also hard at work in the studio recording their debut EP “Catalyst For Love”. The EP was officially launched to a packed house at one of South-East Queensland’s premier original music venues, The Upfront club at Maleny, in December. The band kept the creativity alive all throughout 2009, continually writing and trialling new material to audiences at their regular gigs all over SE Queensland.

2010 has seen the band become finalists in the Original Selection Band Competition, perform on the opening night of the Caloundra Music Festival alongside Powderfinger and Jet, as well as performing with Xavier Rudd for the Aye Aye Captain Sea Shepard fundraiser in Byron Bay.

The Emily Wenham Band have been described as:

“Sweet soulful funky tunes had the crowd mesmerized. A very impressive performance.“ Sharna Taylor (Event Manager - Book a Band Direct)

“Well written tunes with a bass player that really plays”. Dan England (Australian Idol Contestant and Battle of the Bands Judge)

“Your performance was sensational, Em you have an amazing voice and the set you have put together is brilliant. “Amanda French (Event Coordinator Fraser Coast Regional Council)

Current projects for 2011 include writing and recording for their upcoming album, upcoming festival gigs and involvement at the new Eumundi Live Festival and Woodford Folk Festival. The Emily Wenham Band is now featured on internationally acclaimed photographer Tracy Woolley’s “Images of the Sunshine Coast” DVD, which is being played at Westpac Banks Branches all over the Sunshine Coast.
