"EMMA JOLEEN, “Emma Joleen”"

EMMA JOLEEN, “Emma Joleen”
Emma Joleen performed for years in the classical/operatic arena when the penultimate singer’s tragedy struck: She lost her voice. The Aussie musician spent the next year developing her songwriting savvy, penning a stack of savvy compositions—just in time for her voice to return. As a result, Joleen’s 11-track self-titled CD is not only a showcase of her vocal talents, but a calling card of her prose—and the accolades are unending, with a number of the tracks scoring songwriter awards around the world, including a trophy from the Australian Songwriters Assn. as Songwriter of the Year. Lovely ballad “Hello and Goodbye”—which hit No. 1 on the Australian internet radio chart, a rare accomplishment for an indie artist—offers a timeless love song, epic and sky-scraping as it builds to a satisfying climax. Likewise, “Sound of Love” is an elegant, jazz-suffused Sunday brunch buddy. On the other side of the tempo spectrum, “Supergirl,” nominated for a prize at the 17th Annual Los Angeles Music Awards, is an energetic anthem, saucy and sexy, with a churning cacophony of frenetic instrumentation; while the winking, mischievous “Pussycat” sounds as if it could have come from the Katy Perry songbook, as Joleen purrs, “I want to lie down in your lap, I want to feel you stroke my back.” The versatility continues with the giddy piano-driven “Dream of You,” which opens with a vintage AM radio vibe, and sounds like a triumph from Delta Goodrem's catalog; and “Love You,” a straight-ahead pop triumph, with a smooth groove conjuring elements of classic ‘70s soul. Joleen certainly understands the variables of succeeding in the music business; she is professionally imaged and packaged to perfection. With proper promotion and marketing—and a push toward flaunting her wares in a public setting—the singer/songwriter could see her star rise. - Billboard Discoveries by Courtney Harding

"All Aussie Girl"

http://qnews.com.au/content/all-aussie-girl-set-become-next-dykon

She’s a stunning chanteuse with the look of a very young Portia De Rossi and a bright future as a singer, songwriter and Dykon. Australian music artist Emma Joleen has given Beyonce and Lady GaGa a run for their money as she makes her way through the charts.

The independent artist’s new song “Hello and Goodbye” spent the first two weeks of March at the top of the Australian internet radio charts, followed by the #3 spot and finishing at #6.
Emma told QNews that she was “Drawn to songwriting as a form of therapeutic expression”. Emma also said she “…. approaches lyrics as a gentle conversation, honouring the thoughts closest to her heart. Each lyric represents the thoughtful quality of learning’s gained from reflection”. Emma has a classically trained voice, which stands out from the crowd and she is passionate about her music and wants it to mean something. Just to speak to Emma is a pleasure as she is unassuming and yet oozes charisma, but then maybe we are biased? Emma is dynamic, with a vibrant expression somewhere between folk, popera and rock music. Since 2006, Emma Joleen has evolved, challenged the norm and each new song she writes contains melodies that take chances, piano chords that pump out rhythmic dances and massed choir orchestral harmonies worth a second listen in fact more. Emma has been featured on Triple J and Brisbane’s local Triple Z.

Her lyricism and beauty haven’t gone unnoticed by our community either. Emma has more than her fair share of lesbians and the gay boys supporting her as I spotted at one of her gigs. Just maybe she might reach Dykon status like many international acts before her? If you watch her perform you will see why.

Her look and intimate music provoke a feeling that could only incite many a woman’s heart to beat faster and maybe just a few les’ crushes, not to mention her sell out shows. She is currently touring overseas and when we spoke to her last week she told us she was “In cowgirl country, where everyone carries a gun it seems” in Phoenix, Arizona, USA working on her video to “Hello and Goodbye.” Get online, and look out for her album. Emma will surely be captivating hearts through her music and beautiful words, she deserves all the support she gets. For more on Emma or to hear her music go to

Bio

2012: Emma Joleen is an Australian singer/songwriter based in Los Angeles, California.

Emma Joleen's song "Hello and Goodbye" reaches #1 on the Australian Internet Radio Music Station Charts (Australia, March 2010).

Emma Joleen discovered her passion for songwriting when she lost her voice working as a professional classical/operatic singer. Being given the choice of surgery or complete vocal rest, Emma Joleen chose the vocal rest and communicated via the written word for a whole year. During this time, the music continued to sing on the piano where Emma Joleen wrote a number of songs which have since won national and international accolades.

Fortunately, Emma Joleen has recovered vocally and continues to sing and write songs. Vocally, Emma Joleen is a bit of Tori Amos, a touch of Dido and a hint of Kate Bush, where musically she transitions between Regina Spektor, Evanescence and Sara Bareilles. Visually, Emma Joleen is compared to Delta Goodrem and Reese Witherspoon, while her stage presence resembles the energy of Elton John, Billy Joel and Lara Fabian.

Emma Joleen brings a haunting yet memorable quality to her melodies, that is capable of sending pleasurable shivers down your spine.
