Bio
With their shadowy overtones, heavy grooves, and a dash of melancholy, Empath has been blending pure emotion with dark melodies since 1997. Founded by chance, Empath has a chemistry within the band that transcends mere creativity. It is the emotional connection between these three artists that shines like the macabre light of the moon.
The creation of Empath occurred on a cloudy and cold autumn afternoon. Singer and guitarist Adam Kopsch was driving home when he came upon a small blue car riding in his lane directly in front of him. On the rear window of this quaint vehicle was a sign that read "WILL DRUM FOR FOOD." Adam and bassist Jay Conaton had been looking extensively for the final piece of what was to become Empath. And that final piece was a percussionist to bring the raw emotion and passion they had so desperately sought. Adam made an aggressive move to change lanes and attempted to get the driver's attention. Using hand signals, the stranger gave his phone number to Adam, and that night he called Jim Baldwin. They clicked on a personal level instantly, and a week later they were writing songs in Jay's basement. Two months later they had their first gig, and they continued to play regularly at venues throughout the metro Detroit area for several years. Raw was their emotion, dark was their sound, and melodic was their disposition. And today that triumvirate continues to be a trifecta of tenacious temperament.
Empath is a progressive, alternative rock trio akin to Tool, Nirvana, and Pink Floyd. At times their music is heavy, and other times it is atmospheric. They have created their own musical niche that is sure to pique the interest of anyone with a taste for the esoteric.
