"CMW Day 1: Endast and Barr Brothers"

Toronto is rocking with music and I’m having a great time! The rain hasn’t let up, but anything’s better than the ice blizzard back home. At least I get plenty of great bands to look forward to. Here are a few bands that I got to see last night. Hopefully I will make it. With all this great stuff going on, getting pen to the page and writing is harder then is sounds. Let me tell you about some of the great shows I got to see last night…

Endast @ The Bovine Sex Club

Celebrating Bovine Sex Club’s 20th Anniversary, a legion of metal bands and their hardcore fans came out. Especially great to see were metal bands from across Canada. Endast at the Old Bovine Sex Club was a show that really got me into the mood of the festival celebrating the best from many different genres of music. Metal is my secret crush.

Bovine Sex Club is a venue comparable to Foufounes Electriques in Montreal, except a lot smaller. It does however feature the same derelict style you’d come to expect in a place that is a local watering hole for many musicians and music patrons.

The show exhibited the raw awesome power that we’ve come to know and love from Canadian metal. Endast did not disappoint. They played many songs from their latest album Black Cloud and played one of my favorite songs Pray for Rain. After Endast, a few other great metal bands came on to close up the show including Assassinate the Following from southwestern Ontario who had some great licks. The singer Brandon was awesome and showed an incredible level of intensity.
What a great band. Sometimes you find a special band in a place where you didn’t think anything special would happen. But I have to say, after last night’s performance by the Barr Brothers at The Dakota Tavern, they were great but I was done. We arrived late to the festival and after running around like a crazy person all night, these guys were the perfect serenade to end the night.

Brad Barr (lead singer) joined with Sarah Page (harpist) to make some beautiful melodies and perfect vocal harmonies. The band is also made up of members that use to play with Lhasa. With elements of country and folk, this is one band that if you have a chance to, you should check out. When they played The Devil’s Harp my heart sank, one great, great whiskey drinking song. - Forget The Box

"ENDAST"

Endast is loosely translated from Icelandic to mean enduring or long lasting but for this band it has become synonymous with good people, good times and very, very heavy music. From Montreal, Qc Endast has been spreading their brand of brutal melodic metal across the continent since 2005. Taking to the road right away and virtually never stopping. Playing over 1000 shows in the past 6 years, Endast has been bringing the pure metal fury to kids from coast to coast.

Rail City Media is proud to be producing the band’s first live DVD to coincide with Endast’s about-to-be-released album entitled ‘Black Cloud’. RCM be taking to the road with Endast this summer as they tour around canada and gear up to play the mighty Heavy MTL and Heavy TO festivals featuring KISS, Motorhead, Opeth and Anthrax to name a few.

This DVD is going to be awesome. Period - Railcity Media

Bio

ENDAST, translated from an Icelandic word meaning enduring, has become more than just a name for the Montreal based metal band. ENDAST has more accurately become a name synonymous with good people with a strong sense of community, bringing wicked, heavy music to people in as many places as possible.

With over 350,000 km on the road, ENDAST has toured heavily since their inception in 2004. Playing nearly 1100 shows in support of three independently released albums. 'The Promise' EP [2005] and 'Odds Against Tomorrow' [2006] helped make the band a staple in the Canadian metal scene. The latest full length album 'Black Cloud' [2011] topped the iTunes (CA) 200 Top Metal Albums at #6, remaining charted for over 15 consecutive weeks.

2011 was a successful year for ENDAST as an independent band. The only unsigned act to perform on the main stage at both of Canada's elite music festivals: HEAVY MTL & HEAVY TO, sharing the stage with metal heavyweights; KISS, Motorhead, Megadeth, Opeth, Anthrax, Children of Bodom, As I Lay Dying, DevilDriver, Lazarus A.D. & tons more.

When asked what sub-genre of metal ENDAST fits into, guitarist and band founder Chris Arsenian is quick to set critics straight. "We're a metal band, straight up. We play metal. End of story." In a scene that is quick to pigeonhole a band with career ruining suffixes like 'core', ENDAST is looking to break free of sub-genres and incorporate elements from all walks of metal into their own unique blend. Every band is the sum of their influences, and ENDAST's influences are vast in range.

ENDAST is poised to deliver their most brutal offering to date, working with producers Jon Howard of Threat Signal and Bjorn "Speed" Strid of Soilwork. The forthcoming album 'THRIVE' promises to propel the band to new levels of success and growth. An upcoming DVD of the band's misadventures on the road will be released as well, giving fans an insight into what it's like to be in one of Canada's hardest working metal bands.

Keep your ear to the ground, and you'll be sure to hear the rumblings of ENDAST.
