Band’s win was its first competition

End Fight Scene had never entered a single competition before the first annual Riverfest Battle of the Bands.

In fact, they had never played their original music for an audience. So when the Janesville-based band won the competition, the three members could hardly believe it.

“It was awesome,” said drummer Jaime Winchell. “It was definitely awesome. We can’t wait to do it again.”

End Fight Scene, made up of Winchell, lead singer and guitarist Marques Johnson and bassist Dustin Johnson, has been together for about two-and-a-half years. Winchell and Marcus Johnson had been playing in bands together since high school and eventually joined up with Marques’ brother, Dustin Johnson.

Originally named Automatic, the band had to change its name after the trademark owner threatened to sue. So how did they come up with the name End Fight Scene?

“It doesn’t really mean anything,” Winchell said. “I mean, we say that it originally came from the end fight scene of a movie. That’s always the best part of a movie, but it really was the name of a song we wrote when we were in high school.”

When searching for a new name, the band had a hard time as nearly every word was trademarked. Then they came across End Fight Scene.

“We had to do something crazy and that’s what we found,” Winchell said.

End Fight Scene now plays several gigs across the area and mostly plays covers from 80s and 90s bands of the pop/rock genre. The band decided to compete for Battle of the Bands after a fan told the members about it. At first the group really didn’t think much about it, but then decided to compete because they were in the middle of recording their first album.

Two weeks before the competition, the three got together and practiced their songs. Learning the songs wasn’t hard, but the difference comes in practicing versus playing for a live audience, Winchell said.

“When you’re playing a show, you’re playing and performing at the same time,” Winchell said. “The concentration level is higher. You want to be able to run around and have fun.”

For winning the contest, End Fight Scene got to perform a two-song set on the main stage before the Beach Boys concert and received $1,000, 20 hours of free recording time at Pretty Boy Studios in Beloit and DVD of the Riverfest performance and professional photo shoot compliments of Hourglass Media. The band will also get a demo pitch to several major record labels by Riverfest Executive Director Rod Beaudoin.

Finishing touches are being put on the band’s debut album, which was recorded in Madison. More information on the band and the upcoming CD can be found at www.endfightscene.com.

The band would love to make it big, but the members make sure to keep their feet on the ground.

“If you think too big, you’re not going to go anywhere,” Winchell said. “We’re pretty happy about what we’re doing right now.”

Bio

True musicians are the dorky kids that locked themselves in their room and mastered their instrument because they didnt have anything better to do. Then when they got a little older they blossomed into handsom men that had amazing musical talent. THAT'S US!! We have all been playing since we were kids and we have been through all of the phases of a maturing musician. And were still muturing. Right now we are in the phase where selling albums is KING. When we sat down to write our album, we took a step back to see how a simpler mind would hear the songs. Catchy Melodies and Guitar stewed with tight, simple drum and Bass licks....thats what gets um. Thats not how we play normally tho. We are an excellent jam band. See us live- our improvised jams last for 30 minutes crowd permitting. But, in maturing our music we have to play more tastefully. Most of our influences come from the 80's. From heavy metal to Jazz flute.... seriously we love everything.....Versatility is where we always win
