Bio

ENOVELLE is an acoustic post-folk band that fuses the romantic elements of folk music from around the world with the passion of Africa: soulful singing, creative melodic progressions, rhythmically held by the pulse of African drums. Influences range from jazz, classical, flamenco to rock and some pop.

Enovelle was born at the very end of 2009, five days before their first gig where mainly covers were performed. The crowd response was clear: there’s something different in the music of these four friends. 2010 came with a bang of creativity and Enovelle wrote a couple of original songs, played more venues and just had more fun. In March of 2010 some of their original works were recorded as preproduction to their first album “Als lyk beter in die donker”
finally recorded at the end of the year. Throughout 2010 and 2011 so far, Enovelle performed
regularly from live music venues to galleries, art markets and poetry events. At the beginning of 2011, Enovelle shared a stage with some of South Africa’s best folk bands at FolkFest 2011.
They are looking forward to playing more gigs and festivals around SA this year.

Enovelle is:
Mariechen Luyt has been performing in front of audiences the age of six. She is currently in her third year studying music at the Campus of Performing Arts and is a part-time vocal teacher at
Cornwall Hill College. Some of her influences are Norah Jones, Carla Brunie, Rupa and the April Fishes and South African artists such as Vusi Mahlasela.

Hugo Breedt has taken up accordion with initial inspiration of artists such as Yann Tiersen. Inspirations run rather broad, especially different folk music from around the world. Recently
independent writing has also been a great lyrical inspiration.

Danie van Huyssteen has been playing guitar for more than 10 years. Beside Enovelle he does session work and gives guitar lessons. Guitar influences range form John Petrucci to Louis
Mahlangu.

Christiaan Ackermann has been playing djembe every since his involvement in an outreach programme in Zambia. Beside being a percussionist he is also an excellent guitarist and regularly performs as guitarist/singer.
