"Epademik and his Bad Seed Faculty"

EPADEMIK One of the West Coast to be heard artist sat down and spoke it like it’s to be. Hearing his lyric’s, and feeling the beat even though there were none, I hit the pusher man of the BAD SEED project with a few heavy questions to see if he would sway, and classic material appeared. Born in Inglewood, CA. raised in Gardena,. and Orange County, CA. his look would fool those who knew him not.

For the people reading this can you tell them who, Epademik is
Epademik is that hip hop artist who says the stuff you think of but won’t say it. Epademik is an entrepreneur.

Do people ever say you remind them of Marshall Matters?
Only when they see my skin tone…. damn stereotyping ass suckas.

I’ve heard at your shows you like to go in on the crowd before your performance?
Yeah, it does two things, it forces everybody to pay attention & it gets the crowd all riled up & prepared for major Beasty flows about to go down!

Which one of your records would you consider is the best song you ever wrote?
“Being Me” on the Beast Within. It’s one of the most personal songs I’ve ever written & it’s one of my personal favorites.

What is the message behind your video 85%?
The message is simple, 85 percent of rap artists out here nowadays be lying in their songs. They full of shit & these people out here buy into it. It’s sad.

When did your rap career start?
Well, I guess the freestylin’ began in Jr High School just for fun but my first legit pressed up album barcoded & in mom & pop record shops was in 1998.

What is one thing you feel could make the rap game better?
Realism, Storytelling. You know the stuff that built Hip Hop like Slick Rick’s “Children Story”, LL Cool J’s “I’m Bad”, Big Daddy Kane’s “I Get The Job Done”, EPMD’s “Please Listen To My Demo”. Quality Music, Period Point Blank!

Where did you get the name Epdre from?
LOL…my bro OG Cuicide named me that because of the quality of my recording & mixing.

So you are the CEO of bad seed faculty?
Yep, I’m El Presidente, CEO, Owner… whatever you wanna call it.

Who’s the other Artist on your label?
I don’t like to call it a label but more of a cult that offers opportunities to artists that are dope. We got Siccness, Akoma &
Kadillak Kaz.

Who does the mixing and mastering for your projects?
Me, myself & I… I haven’t found anybody else I’m comfortable with.

What type of rap artists would you consider yourself?
I’m a Hip Hop Artist that is truly independent that delivers real life music that people can relate to whether they are 16 years old or 60 years old.

For your album beast within how did you come up with that name?
The title reflects my inner feelings at this point of my life & music career. I have a Beast Within that can’t be contained.

The record bitch slap on beast within was that directed to someone In particular?
Not any one person in particular just idiotic people that continue to play themselves thinking they’re official but in reality they aren’t.

How is it being an artist from Orange County?
It’s difficult because OC isn’t known for Hip Hop. So you have to go three times harder than an artist from LA, SD & IE since OC hasn’t had a true breakout artist to get that major constant spotlight.

Who helps you manage bad seed faculty?
That would be the one & only Antonia Bernal. She truly is an incredible asset to the entire Bad Seed Faculty. Shout out to her for putting up with all of our shenanigans & bullshit.

Can you tell the readers about your documentary for the ones that haven’t seen it yet?
Yeah, it’s pretty dope cause we filmed it in my old neighborhood in Gardena & throughout OC. Basically going to various spots that I been at & continue to go to. Go check it out on my YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/emceeesq.

Who would you say was your favorite rapper growing up?
There was three to be exact Too Short, Ice Cube & Big Daddy Kane.

The artists on your label what do they have out are coming out right now?
We got Siccness dropping an LP titled ME by summer 2013 & Akoma will also be releasing his debut album titled SCUMBAG this year.

Do you have any last words for the readers?
Buy all artists music & stop stealing it & sharing it. At the end of the day this is our talent, blood, sweat & tears. Not to mention it does cost money to put this music out. Support Good music. - One West Magazine

"Exclusive Epademik Interview!"

Raptalk got the chance to catch up with Orange County's rising Emcee Epademik!

Where did you grow up?

Grew up in good ol' Gardena, (that's 136th & Hoover in case you wanna know) until I was 12 then my pops moved us out to O.C. to get us out of that rough environment. Talk about a culture shock! I remember saying to my dad there is nothing but white people here. ha ha He just shook his head and gave me that look like I was crazy.

Where did the name Epademik come from?

I actually received the name after battling some guys at a house party in San Juan Capistrano. It was funny cause two of my friends were freein next to the deejay & next thing I know two guys started rapping at my boys on some battle type stuff. They did their thing and plus my friends were drunk and we all know how excessive alcohol & rapping do not mix too well. lol. Basically they were getting served so I felt like it was my duty to go in & save them. So I ended up ripping both of them guys and like my cuzzin DJ Jemani says I SHUT EM' DOOOOOOOOWWWWWWN!!

Afterwards a good friend of mine was telling me how I ripped those dudes and I was like a plague how I went in & destroyed them...an epidemic. And there it was... a star was born! ha ha I am a true believer that emcees names are given to them.

How would you describe your style?

I would describe my style as lyrics with substance, storytelling, humorous at times, very blunt & to the point, raw...ya know good Hip Hop... what seems to be missing nowadays.

When did you first fall in love with Hip Hop?

I first fell in love with Hip Hop in 1985 "all the way live" Slick Rick & Doug E Fresh. I thought that was the illest thing I had ever heard. Beat boxing & emceeing.. the true artform, I loved it to death & I still do.

You were nominated for Artist of the Year -07 at the Orange County Music Awards, how did that come about?

I was really doing a lot of backpack hustlin in the streets, building my name & rep as much as possible. Of course shows is a major aspect of that. Somewhere, somehow my manager Snap connected with the head people of the OCMA's and tossed them my music. They mentioned that they had been hearing about me throughout O.C. Next thing I know, I'm nominated for Hip Hop artist of the year. Really, cool experience. I did not win it but the nomination was a real good look. It made a lot more people pay attention to what I was doing out here.

Another nomination for the Urban Artist of the Year Award - 2008, how did that go?

It was crazy because I thought I would end up in the Hip Hop category again but they heard a song I did that is a hip hop/alternative style. They did not really know where to place me. Since I'm known for Hip Hop but I switched it up on them I ended up in the Urban category which is great cause that's the angle I am trying to hit. A much larger market. Once again, I was overlooked. However, hey, two years in a row is real major.

What are you currently working on right now?

I just released a mixtape with DJ Arkane (Shadyville DJ / Bogish Boys) & Akoma called DANG! That is Hot. The production is crazy hot by Steve Dang out of OC. Be sure to go to my myspacer and download it! I have a couple videos & some other fun stuff for everybody. I am finishing another mixtape called Backpack Hustle. It will be out in a couple weeks. I am just keeping real active right now. Oh yeah and of course I am also working on my next album. I am taking my time on that one.

"Listen at your own Risk" released in 2004

That was actually my first solo album. That album definitely was a building process. I had a lot of fun creating it. I said a lot of crazy shit on it. lol

Even though OC and L.A are a freeway away, how does to the 2 county’s compare and contrast?

LA has been in the trenches of Hip Hop for decades & OC is just now getting recognition. Especially now that labels are taking notice of us OC heads since the Cashis got signed to Shady Records. Wassup Ramone! Bogish Boy reppin!!

Since "Listen at your own Risk" is there any plans to have a 2nd album?

Actually, my second solo album was The Third Finger. It came out in 2006. You can peep out on my site. www.epademik.com & iTunes.

Who would you want on it?

I am not very big on having features on my solo albums. If somebody makes the cut then it has to be some incredible shit. I feel like people buy my solo album to hear what I am talking about, not for this guy or that girl. I know you're thinking, "Damn EP that’s some arrogant shit, your such an asshole!" lol. Not the case.

LOL Not at all, that's how it should be! What do you think of the state in Hip Hop?

It is gone to complete shit. I realized how far off the radar it has gotten when I was talking with a younger high school kid and I mentioned EPMD & MC Shan & he said who the hell was that? Its sad cause hip-hop to this kids that - Rap Talk

"Epademik Interview – “Addicted To The Grind”..Grammy Award Winning?"

OC rapper Epademik is getting ready to release his Hoopla/Universal debut album, Addicted To The Grind. The album, which is described by Ep himself as “a really good fucking project,” does not have a set release date yet, but look out for it in the beginning of 2010.

The lead single, “I’m An Addict,” is expected to drop in roughly two months. A video for the single has already been shot.

HIPHOPisHERE.com caught up with Epademik for an exclusive interview where we talked about the upcoming album.

HHiH: How’s it going Ep?

Epademik: I’m doing great. Keepin busy as usual. What’s good?

HHiH: Everything’s great here! Your album Addicted To The Grind will be released through Hoopla/Universal soon. What can you tell us about the album?

Epademik: It’s a really good fucking project. I mean even the Grammy Award winning mixing and mastering engineer icon known as Bobby Brooks said he hasn’t heard a hip hop project this good in a long, long time. If that doesn’t count for something then I don’t know what would! The sound is so BIG it’s ridiculous. It has substance and a concept. When Chad Kiser (Hoopla/Universal) heard it he immediately called me up and was like, “Whoah, we got something great with this project!” The hand full of people who have heard the project have had nothing but positive things to say about it. The multi-platinum publicist Jon Hay is heavily involved with this project so you know it’s official.

HHiH: Does it have a confirmed release date yet?

Epademik: The date has been pushed back a few times already but I can assure you that the beginning of 2010 will be a fair estimation for an actual release date. The single is already picked. Artwork has been completed. It’s in full motion.

HHiH: What producers do you have on the album? Or are you producing it yourself?

Epademik: Dr. Dre, Timbaland, Just Blaze, Alchemist… not really, I’m just fucking with you. Lol I have production from Serf Show (G Malone, Snoop, Dogg Pound), Steve Dang (Kottonmouth Kings, RBX, Baby Bash) and I even got a track from DJ Arkane (Shadyville DJ). The quality of sound is really incredible.

HHiH: What does the title Addicted To The Grind mean?

Epademik: The title is basically describing the inner drive of getting my music to the world. I’m an addict to my music. I can never get enough of it. To be successful in this music industry you have to truly be addicted to your grind.

HHiH: I got the pleasure to hear the first single “I’m An Addict.” This is a dope track that I’m sure will blow a lot of people’s minds away. Is this what we can expect the rest of the album to be like?

Epademik: For sure! The sound of this album is so melodic and bumping… it’s gonna make people pay attention. I spent a lot of time on getting the right production together and even longer mixing each song as close to perfection as I could. I really wanted to create something fresh and new.

HHiH: Why did you pick this as the first single?

Epademik: Actually I put all the titles on seperate pieces of paper in a sweaty shoe and picked with my eyes shut and intoxicated of vodka. LOL.. It just made sense for the first single to introduce myself and the whole concept to the world be “I’m An Addict.” Believe me we had a real difficult time trying to pick the jumpoff single.

HHiH: When will the single be released to the public?

Epademik: Approximately 8 weeks… paperwork has to go through first. All of that is already in motion. Gotta have the business aspect handled first.

HHiH: Are you shooting a video for it?

Epademik: Just shot the video last week in Laguna Beach. I know your thinking to yourself, “Laguna Beach? That’s not gangsta at all!” Well if I was a “Gangsta Rapper” then that would’ve been a fucking problem, but I’m not. Besides I stay in South Orange County so this is my stomping grounds besides how would it look if I shot my first major video in the “Hood” or some shit. That would be a major fail.

HHiH: What’s the video going to be like? I’m guessing it won’t be just a generic hip hop video with girls all over you, luxury cars, and money thrown around?

Epademik: No doubt, all that false bullshit these artists be pushin on the audience is lies. I’m really focusing on portraying some real life shit that everybody can relate to, besides the economy is really fucked right now and ain’t nobody flossin out no more. I dont own a lambo, I’m not a millionaire and I don’t throw money around like its nothing. I’m like every other artist out here, grinding to make something out of nothing, you feel me?

HHiH: Yeah, definitely. I don’t know how much you can tell me about this but I’ve heard that you’re releasing this album in a very unique way?

Epademik: Yeah.. I can’t really speak on it too much but I can tell you it’s gonna be really dope how Hoopla/Universal Music Group is releasing my product. I can say this much… stay posted to Epademik.com - Official website for Epademik Emcee Esq and as soon as - Hip Hop Is Here -Emil

"Hip Hop Artist Epademik Is An Addict"

Hoopla/Universal recording artist Epademik is getting ready to release his first album, Addicted To The Grind, on a major label. The first single, “I’m An Addict,” along with the video is set to be released in June.

“The song ‘Im An Addict‘ is as real as it gets. I am an addict to my music,” Epademik says. “And the music video parallels perfectly with the song. Director Oscar Alvarez brought my vision to screen. It’s not your typical hip hop/rap video… I wanted to bring humor and sarcasm to the video just like in my music. The ‘powers that be’ at Hoopla and Universal are really excited about this video and single. It’s a breathe of fresh air.”

"EPADEMIK (October 2008) Interview By: Jonathan Hay"

Little did we know what we were in store for on this sunny southern California day in Orange county when we caught up with Ca$his for a quick minute. While talking a little about his new album and upcoming tours, Ca$his mentioned his man, Epademik, telling us about their song "Mr. Know It All" which was just added to Shade 45 (Eminem's Sirius Satellite radio station).

With that being said, we dug a little deeper into the existence of this crazy emcee named Epademik – because after all, if Ca$his co-signs for him, then he's must be doing something right!

So we hit up Epademik and found that the conviction he portrayed was raw emotion with a purpose – reminding us of a time ten years back when a white emcee from Detroit took the world by storm with his raw lyrical skill -- never biting his tongue on any topic.
Could Epademik be the next one to carry that torch? You decide for yourself. Epademik gave Dubcnn the exclusive to his first single "Aired Out" - Download it below. You also should check out his hilarious Dubcnn Shoutout -- it's unlike any other you’ve heard!

Dubcnn: You have a song that you recorded with Ca$his that was just added to Eminem’s Sirius Satelite Radio station - Shade 45… Tell us more about that song – and how that happened.

Ohhh yeah Mr. Know It All! The way that song unfolded was Arkane hit me up and said that Ca$his & I need to do a collab. I was with it of course. Originally Ca$his was gonna just toss me a verse that was laying around until I hit him with the song idea of Mr. Know It All, then he said that we have to link up and knock the song out in true emcee fashion! Big ups to my good friend Arkane for pushing the issue to get the collabo done and for looking out for me on all aspects! So I called Serf Show and told him about how Ca$his and I were gonna do a track together and I needed a track worthy to be beasted on! No kidding, I had three tracks to choose from that night. Serf is an incredible producer. Ca$his and I linked up the next day and we knocked it out, then I had my friend Joe Arnold (Project 1) come to the studio and lay the hook down. The whole song came together so fast like it was meant to be! The crazy part about Mr. Know It All being played on Shade45 is that I didn’t even know about it. Last Thursday night I attended an open mic event in Santa Ana and my homies Xstreem and El the Self came up to me asking me about what plug do I have with Shade45? I was like “What the hell are you guys talking about?” At that time, they told me that they’ve been hearing Mr. Know It All on Shade45. Shout out to all the Shadyville DJ’s & Bogish Boy Dj’s!! Who would’ve thought! That’s dope.

Dubcnn: How did you even meet Ca$his…

Here’s a funny story for you, the first time I met Ca$his, I was at a studio and when I walked into the control room Ca$his was in the booth and he looked through glass, smiled all big, and came running out with his hands up. Arkane and Rikanatti were like “what the hell” and when Ca$his came in to the control room he looked at me puzzled and said “Oh man you tripped me out, I thought you was Em!” (laughing) I had no choice but to reply with “Well, you know all us ‘white rappers’ look the same.” The comparisons, the damn comparisons. (laughing) Just the other day I was on the phone with Ca$his and in he middle of the conversation he stopped and said, “Yo G you’re really trippin me out right now cause the way you say certain things reminds me of Em.” Ohhh gawwd… AHHHHH enough with the comparisons! At least he didn’t say I reminded him of Vanilla Ice or Snow…INFORRRMER! *laughing*

Dubcnn: Have you heard any rumors about Eminem’s new album?

Yeah I’ve heard it’s gonna be ridiculous. I hear that Slim Shady is back with a vengeance. Hip-hop really needs a verbal cleansing right now. Who better than Eminem to tackle that task at this time?

Dubcnn: Ca$his is currently shopping your project to Shady Records right now?

Actually it is on its way to Eminem courtesy of Ca$his as we speak. It’s a good feeling when an artist who is signed with a quality label like Shady is endorsing what I’m doing. He’s really helping to put me in opportunities to further my career to the next level. I mean think about that for a second… I am one person away from one of the biggest hip-hop artists of all time. That’s crazy, right? You’d be amazed at how many people give Ca$his music to pass on to Shady Records. So for him to take the time to actually ask me for my press kit and send it is a real good look.

Dubcnn: If you sign with Shady Records, what would be the first thing you do…

I think I would have to spend any advancement money on tattoos, guns & jewelry! Isn’t that what all the new rappers do (laughing). On some real shit, I would continue with my grind in making music & rocking shows. I would definitely have to take a trip to Detroit and New York to meet everybody and get to work on a larger scale. Sleep is for when you’re dead! I - Dubcnn

EPADEMIK EMCEE ESQ IS A STANDOUT AMONG THE CONTEMPORARY HIP-HOP COMMUNITY. HIS RELENTLESS ATTITUDE TOWARD THE QUALITY OF HIS WORK AND ITS CONTINUED ORIGINALITY AND IMPROVEMENT HAS BEEN ECHOED IN HIS UNSTOPPABLE RISE IN THE HIP-HOP WORLD. EPADEMIK'S JOURNEY INTO THE WORLD OF MUSIC BEGAN IN THE EARLY 1990'S WHEN HIS OLDER BROTHER INTRODUCED HIM TO THE HIP-HOP SCENE. STUDYING SUCH LEGENDARY HIP-HOP PIONEERS AS BIG DADDY KANE, KRS-1, TOO SHORT & SPECIAL ED TO NAME A FEW, EPADEMIK'S DISTINCTIVE STYLE OF EXPRESSION BEGAN TO TAKE SHAPE. AFTER YEARS OF FINE-TUNING HIS FREESTYLE SKILLS, EPADEMIK BEGAN BATTLING OTHER EMCEES AND BUILDING A REPUTATION FOR HIS OFTEN HUMOROUS RHYMES. AS TIME WENT ON EPADEMIK AND HIS OLDER BROTHER FORMED A GROUP CALLED THE CASUAL CREW AND PERFORMED AT A NUMBER OF LOCAL CLUBS, INCLUDING SLOPPY JOE'S (IRVINE, CA), THE BLOCK OF ORANGE (ORANGE, CA), STADIUM PALLADIUM (ANAHEIM, CA), AND SHEPHERDS NIGHT CLUB (PHOENIX, AZ). AFTER THREE YEARS, TWO ALBUMS COMPLETED, AND A SIGNIFICANT FAN BASE, THE CASUAL CREW DISBANDED, FORCING EPADEMIK TO CONTEMPLATE WHICH WAY TO TAKE HIS CAREER. IN THE VOID LEFT BY THE BREAKUP OF THE CASUAL CREW, EPADEMIK HONED HIS ARTIST SKILLS EVEN MORE BY BECOMING MORE INVOLVED IN THE PRODUCTION ASPECTS OF HIP-HOP. NETWORKING WITH PRODUCERS AND ARTISTS THROUGHOUT SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA AND ARIZONA HE GAINED NOTORIETY FOR HIS CREATIVE SONG WRITING. FEELING IT WAS TIME TO SERIOUSLY PURSUE A SOLO CAREER, EPADEMIK VIRTUALLY DISAPPEARED FROM THE MUSIC SCENE FOR ALMOST A YEAR TO PERFECT HIS DEBUT ALBUM, AND IN THE SUMMER OF 2004 LISTEN AT YOUR OWN RISK WAS RELEASED. THE LEAD SINGLE ACT LIKE YOU KNOW HAILED THE NUMBER ONE SPOT ON THE OPEN MIC SHOW (KLBC.ORG, LONG BEACH CITY COLLEGE) FOR SIX WEEKS, UNTIL BEING RETIRED BY ANOTHER OF EPADEMIK'S SONGS. IN 2006, EPADEMIK'S SECOND SOLO ALBUM, THE THIRD FINGER, WAS RELEASED NATIONALLY IN STORES AND INTERNATIONALLY VIA THE INTERNET. DESPITE CURRENTLY BEING AN INDEPENDENT ARTIST, EPADEMIK'S WORK HAS RECEIVED RADIO PLAY NATION-WIDE, INCLUDING IN THE STATES OF MASSACHUSETTS, HAWAII, ARIZONA, TEXAS, MICHIGAN, AND OF COURSE CALIFORNIA. SUCH NATIONAL RENOWN CONTINUES TO DEMONSTRATE EPADEMIK'S UNSTOPPABLE RISE TOWARD THE VERY TOP OF THE HIP-HOP COMMUNITY. EPADEMIK WAS NOMINATED FOR HIP HOP ARTIST OF THE YEAR AT THE 2007 ORANGE COUNTY MUSIC AWARDS AND WAS NOMINATED IN 2008 FOR URBAN ARTIST OF THE YEAR. AT THIS TIME IS WHEN EPADEMIK TEAMED UP WITH ANTONIA BERNAL, WHO HANDLES EPADEMIK'S PROMOTIONS/MARKETING & P.R. WORK. MOST RECENTLY EPADEMIK HAS TEAMED UP WITH DJ ARKANE (SHADYVILLE DJ'S) TO PUT OUT HIS LATEST MIXTAPES. THIS HAS LEAD TO EPADEMIK WORKING WITH CASHIS (SHADY RECORDS). TRULY GREAT THINGS ARE IN STORE FOR THIS ORANGE COUNTY HIP HOP ARTIST. FOR 2009 HE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO MEET WITH THE MULTI-PLATINUM PUBLICIST JONATHAN HAY WHICH IN TURN LANDED HIM A RECORD DEAL WITH HOOPLA MEDIA GROUP / LRT/ /UNIVERSAL. EPADEMIK'S FIRST MAJOR RELEASE ON HOOPLA / LRT / UNIVERSAL IS TITLED "ADDICTED TO THE GRIND", WHICH WAS RELEASED NOV. 11, 2010. In Dec. 2010 EPADEMIK TEAMED UP WITH DA' HITMAN (Dallas, TX. DJ & Music Director of SurvRadio) AND RELEASED THE MIXTAPE TITLED "JESUS SYNDROME" AND TO DATE THE MIXTAPE HAS OVER 24,000 DOWNLOADS ONLINE. EPADEMIK CONTINUES TO RELEASE MUSIC FOR HIS FANS VIA THE INTERNET & THE STREETS TO SATISFY HIS LOYAL FANBASE HUNGER FOR HIS MUSIC. EPADEMIK ALSO CONSISTENTLY POSTS VIDEO BLOGS THAT UPDATE HIS FANS ABOUT WHAT HE HAS COMING UP & WHAT HE IS INVOLVED IN. EPADEMIK'S VIDEO BLOGS HAVE BEEN QUOTED AS "ENTERTAINING , INFORMATIVE, REAL & FUNNY AS HELL!"
