Erica Alves – Better For Us All 4:22
By Chris Parkin on 18 September 2015
São Paulo-based singer-songwriter, producer and synthesizer obsessive Érica Alves will be one of 61 artists attending Red Bull Music Academy Paris between October 25 and November 27, where she'll inject proceedings with her strange, spaced-out, fizzing synth-pop.
Alves, who comes from Nova Friburgo, near Rio de Janeiro, has been making lo-fi pop since she was 12 years old, and has made the usual journey from indie-rock and psych-pop bands, via a funk diversion, to her current solo project.
These days Alves is firmly ensconced in the world of synth-pop – and synthesizers in general. She plays in local São Paulo acts The Drone Lovers and BAPHYPHYNA, but is focusing, for now, on making self-styled "lo-fi-trip-synth-pop" under her own name. Before Alves hotfoots it to Paris at the end of next month, watch her exclusive live session for RedBull.com/Music. - Redbull.com

São Paulo’s Érica Alves has her head in the clouds but her feet firmly planted in the dirt. Her earthy voice exists in direct contrast to her instrumentals, which are ethereal yet grounded by stumbling drum machines and bubbling organic keys, all recorded through layers of cassette grit. (She’s a fan of both industrial innovators This Heat and dreamy French synth poppers Air.) It’s at once soothing and a little dark, like you’re listening in on demos recorded in her bedroom. In addition to her entrancing work on record, Alves has lately been exploring dancier territory, with a new live act that sees her typical beats incorporating more house and techno structures. - Red Bull Music Academy
