"Personality goes a long way"

NOTHIN LEFT TO SAY LP
To quote Samuel L Jackson in Pulp Fiction, "personality goes a long way." And fortunately, Boston-born New York resident Erica Cashman exhibits plenty of different personalities across the 11 tracks here. From frothy power pop and sultry garage rock to delicate, balladeering, ‘Nothin’ Left To Say’ speaks volumes about a fresh new talent with seemingly endless possibilities.

Opener "Just Love", "Radio Song" and the frenetic "Rock ‘n’ Roll" are buzzing with spiky New Wave action. Bleepy synths, splodgy bass and the occasional Eddie Van Halen-style solo complement a vocal that has parallels with Gwen and Madge, but has a seductive honesty all of its own. Especially, that is, on the grown up, relationship dissections of the title track, the cinematic slowie "Watchtower" and the fuzzed up "Strung Along." "You could point out the problems, you just never figured out how to solve them," sings Erica with all the frankness of Aimee Mann or Juliana Hatfield.

But boyfriends and girlfriends aren’t just about having arguments, there are lots of other fun things you can do – as indicated on the libidinous "Lately;" with its mean ‘60s groove, raunchy vocal and mean maracas. It’s primal stuff, but if you want plain old pervy, check out the S&M slant of "MF." "Lie down and take it. Is that good for you?" Erica commands. If you insist.

However, more sensual still are the other-worldly psycho-dramas "My Role" and "Run." The latter combines the bleak, jaded charm of "Eleanor Rigby" and Twin Peaks to create a hypnotic trance vibe. Meanwhile "My Role" employs fractured piano and period strings to magic up a sound as elegant and prim as old lace, but with a dark, restrained undercurrent of frustration. Sort of Jane Austen with beats.

An original voice with clever musical collaborators and a big rig full of novel ideas, Erica Cashman has delivered an album full of interest, emotional pull and sweet surprises. The term singer/songwriter just doesn’t cover it.
