"Time Bomb Taxi"

Time Bomb Taxi

Review by: Paul Barile - former editor Chicago Arts and Entertainment

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Time Bomb Taxi just might be the most audacious band I have heard in all of my years writing about music and musicians.

In an industry that embraces mindless conformity and simple sing-a-long pop nuggets, TBT stands out as a totally original musical adventure. This intrepid sextet eschews the norm and makes music that matters. The Chicago music scene is better for having them here.

Each song on their four-song demo (which has higher production value that much of the tripe seeping out of Q101's play list these days) brims with spice and texture defying easy classification. The music is complex but welcoming which is not an easy feat. This disc whets the appetite for what TBT can produce in the future.

Eric Fridrich's passionate vocal work is unique. He brings an understated power to the music.

Bass player Nate Lerohl's work (seven-string electric and upright) offers an education for aspiring bass players everywhere.

Chris Denman brings a variety of horns to the table and plays them impeccably filling in spaces rather than blasting out the other musicians.

Matt Radostits adds flair with his trumpet as well as backing vocals that complement Fridrich's voice.

Dave Forsman's cello creates a vibe akin to a thinking man's Electric Light Orchestra.

Holding this entire unit together - and driving then forward with every beat is drummer Chris Radostits.

For truly original music that defies genre yet somehow remains accessible, one has to look no further than Time Bomb Taxi.

Jazz, Latin, folk, rock....A songwriter. Eric Fridrich is a one of a kind. By himself he offers an acoustic guitar featuring many styles, a Harmonica with minor modes as well as blues, and a unique and powerful voice that always captures the audience. Eric's music is extremely accesible having open invitations to play in: China,France, Australia, Italy, UK, zchech, Carribean, all over the US. His recent work has led to his 2006 nomination for " best new artist of the year" via Seattle weekly, Feature full page article in the collegient, in studio interview at kbcs fm, Channel 5 news exclusive interview, and national radio. All this achieved with out a label or publicist as the music speaks for itself. Mostly a solo performer as he loves the freedom, you can find him in Chicago with the likes of internationally respected Nate lerohl (double bass) who adds the German bow in the Duocracy. In Seattle you can find him in the Eric Fridrich Trio- with Johnny conga a percussionist with a trail of credits like: Jackson 5, Gloria Estafon, over 20 Grammy award winners. Eric Fridrich, singer/songwriter:
Raised on the south side of Chicago, comes an artist who has inspired audiences with his stunning acoustic guitar and soulful harmonica. Eric Fridrich has played many parts of the country, from Chicago to Denver to New York City’s famous C.B.G.B.’s gallery. After creating and then leading two original music groups in Chicago (Time Bomb Taxi, Dogfish and the Bottom Feeders) for many years, he has moved onwards pursuing a new depth in his musical career.

Now living and playing in Seattle, Eric has emerged as a standout in Seattle’s acoustical reformation. Combining his guitar and “second voice” harmonica, his blues-rock and jazz influenced music join a unique and distinct lyricism. Influenced by Eastern modalities, with a sharp American sense, Eric’s consummate songwriting harks of Bob Dylan and John Hiatt. Eric’s journey has now reached well beyond his mid-western upbringing and, he has developed a whole new set of songs to compliment many of his old Chicago favorites.

Eric is currently beginning to record his first studio album with a full band. Stay tuned for this anticipated release, as well as the debut of Eric's new band in Seattle!
