American singer-songwriter Eric Eckhart, in a quarter-life crisis, left life in America and moved to Europe to reconnect with his life-long passion for music. Now based in Berlin, Eric's music blends Americana/Pop with Indie/Rock, all with classic songwriting sensibilities at its heart.

Biography

In a quarter-life crisis, Eric Eckhart left America, his corporate job, possessions, family and friends and moved to Europe to go after his dream and reconnect with his lifelong passion for music.

His new album, ‘This Is Where It Starts’, was recorded in Berlin in what was former East Germany’s main radio station. Eric’s music continues to branch out while feeding off his West Virginia roots by blending Americana/Pop with Indie/Rock, all with classic songwriting sensibilities at its heart.

Produced by Eric Eckhart and Fab Leseure (worked with Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Frames), the album also features musicians Dave Hingerty (The Swell Season, Josh Ritter) and Nina Hynes and was mastered by Simon Davey (Björk, Moby) at the Exchange.

Realised with the help of friends in Berlin’s artistic community, and the support of family in America, ‘This Is Where It Starts’ is testament to the belief that it is never too late to begin again.

Lyrics

From Whence I Came

Written By: Eric Eckhart

I’m home again
From whence I came
The night is still
But the hurt remains
I open the door
And step inside
The fire’s still lit
But the flame has died

Chorus:
Once I hid away my hopes and dreams
‘Til I had to say goodbye
I felt a little like a drowning man
So I had to say goodbye
I had to say, I had to say goodbye

I’m counting up
The reasons why
The balance shifts
Between truth and lies
I hold in my hand
Our faded dreams
They’re withered and torn
But they never leave

Chorus:
Once I hid away my hopes and dreams
‘Til I had to say goodbye
I felt a little like a dying man
So I had to say goodbye
I used to find it hard to be myself so I had to say goodbye so I could fly, I could fly

Bring Me Down

Written By: Eric Eckhart

You made things hard for me for my feet to touch the ground
Wrapped up in no mistakes almost let my spirit drown
I tried so hard to please, to but a smile upon your face
Never room for the flaws and truth made me nearly suffocate

Chorus:
I fear this heartache will bring me down, down
I fear this heartache will bring me down, down

Why do the pain and tears always make you look away?
Why can’t it be ok just to show my body aches?
I wish you’d told me once that perfection don’t exist
All that time and those tender years hiding sadness such as this

Chorus:
I fear this heartache will bring me down, down
I fear this heartache will bring me down, down
I fear this heartache will bring me down, down
I fear this heartache will bring me down, down

Bring me down, Bring me down, down
Bring me down

Happy

Written By: Eric Eckhart

Happy. I’ll never be happy
I’m telling you please don’t come my way
Sorry. I’ll always be sorry
I begging you please don’t come my way

Chorus:
I know you’ll never understand
I know you’ll never understand
I try to fight it but the truth don’t lie
There's too much darkness in this heart of mine

Tempted. I’ll always be tempted
I’m hurting you please don’t come my way
Lonely. I’ll always be lonely
I’m saving you please don’t come my way

Chorus:
I know you’ll never understand
I know you’ll never understand
I try to fight it but the truth don’t lie
There's too much darkness in this heart of mine

I swear. The wind has carved upon the cliffs
A picture of the night we kissed. Now it’s gone

Chorus:
I know you’ll never understand
I know you’ll never understand
II want redemption but the truth don't lie
There's too much darkness in this heart of mine
I know you’ll never understand
I know you’ll never understand
I know you’ll never understand
This is where it starts

Lost

Written By: Eric Eckhart

This is why we shade the darkness from our eyes
This is where it starts
This is when the fools believe that lovers never part
And I feel lost

This is why we always hurt the ones we love
We never find the gray
We only choose to close our minds and turn and run away
And I feel lost
I fell the roots of sadness twisting up to take my place
And I fear I can’t repair

This is why there’s nothing gained without a cost
I’m trying to let go
I try to let the armor down and feel the breeze blow
This where it hurts and this is why it aches
When you chip away at love the bough begins to break
And I feel lost
I feel it in the moments it’s so hard to open up and I retreat
And I feel lost

This is how it starts, this is where it ends
We go back and forth and backwards once again
This is how it starts, this is where it ends
We go back and forth and backwards once again

I Saw A Light

Written By: Eric Eckhart

I spent the nights with the alcoholics
I took the money with a Judas kiss
I was in love before and all it promised
But it was never like this, it was never like this
Something took a hold, pulling me on for tomorrow

Chorus:
I saw a light above your head
And felt the waves beneath your bed
I saw a light above your head
I reach out, I’m home

I watched the years disappear in sadness
I felt the knife and the same mistakes
I was in love and thought there’d be no other
I wasn’t counting on this
I never counted on this
Something took a hold, pulling me on for tomorrow

Pulling me on, yes you're pulling me on
Pulling me on, yes you're pulling me on
Something took a hold, pulling me on for tomorrow

Chorus
Chorus

Better Way

Written By: Eric Eckhart

All I get is raining on a Sunday afternoon
Lying here in this hard hit town where there’s nothing left to do
And all those words keep shining in, someday I’ll overcome
Lying here with the same old fears
Where the love is on the run

Chorus:
Now everyday
There’s panic on the street
And panic on my face
I’m falling on my knees
I’ve got to find a better way

Tomorrow seems too heavy so I’m drinking cheap red wine
I told myself that I’d change my ways but I’m running out of time
And all I wants to fly away, to feel the burning sun
But I’m lying here on the brink of tears

Monday blues are chasing and I start to lose my way
They’re tearing down this old brick town and putting nothing in its place
Still all those words keep shining in, someday I’ll overcome
lying here in the grip of fear
With the lovers on the run

Chorus:
Now everyday
There’s panic on the street
And panic on my face
I’m falling on my knees
I’ve got to find a better way

I’ve got to find a better way, I’ve got to find a better way

Katie's Waiting

Written By: Eric Eckhart

Still I cannot find
Still I cannot find my home
And there's no place left for me
No place left where I can go
So it's one more sad goodbye
One more sad goodbye from me

And it's hard when you discover that
Hard for you to sit in my place
It's so strange
And it's hard when you discover that
Hard for you to sit in my place
When Katie's waiting

Still I cannot hear
Still I cannot hear my heart
And it's crying out for me
But the distance now has grown too far
And the silence in the night
The silence just won't let me be

It's easy when you compromise
Easier to sit in your place
It's so safe
It's easy when you compromise
Easier to sit in your place
When Katie's waiting

She's waiting, she's waiting
Katie's waiting
