"AUK's EP Round-UP"

"Memories Don't Love You Back carries on where the last album left off with five emotionally charged numbers that are as rewarding as they are challenging. Hagen’s strength lies in his minimalistic approach both lyrically, where the detail is deliberately left sparse encouraging the listener to fill in the blanks, and musically, where the arrangements remain uncluttered and unswerving, all underpinned by a heavy pulse." - Americana UK

""Memories Don't Love You Back" Americana Highways Review"

"The songs here are raw and honest about imperfect childhood, addictions and tragic relationships of various types...the arrangements are 'Americana lonesome'. " - Americana Highways

"Eric Hagen "Revival" Review"

Eric Hagen’s songs are like Edward Hopper’s paintings. They invoke alienation and pain in ways that are both disturbing and beautiful. As American Studies professor James Peacock has written, “The haunting power of Hopper’s art derives from his particular brand of realism, one which is sparse, disinclined toward extraneous detail and, ultimately, characterized by what the painting seems to omit rather than what it represents.” This also applies to Hagen’s songs. ‘Revival’s’ orchestration is spare; drums, guitar, and bass to do the heavy lifting while organ and violins make a brief appearance. Yet these songs are emotionally complex. Hopper’s paintings too had an “apparent simplicity” behind which “lies great complexity and depth,” as Peacock noted, with the lack of detail inviting “the spectator to complete the image by speculating on past and impending events, on the relationships between the characters”.

The lyrics in Hagen’s songs provide just enough detail to serve as an invitation to the listener to fill in the gaps. These songs could be used as a soundtrack for listeners’ own disappointments.

Sometimes, there is an even closer overlap between Hagen and Hopper’s art. ‘Dying Along’ could be describing the couple in Hopper’s ‘Summer Evening’ with Hagen singing ‘‘I thought we had love yet between us,/ You know it’s something to tend like a rose,/ But just cuz the bloom is unseen doesn’t mean that,/ The flower it ain’t gonna grow,/ Can’t we keep trying, it’s better than dying.”

There is a sense of intimacy but also alienation in both artists’ work. One source of Hagen’s intimacy is his voice. Reading his lyrics is little indication of how deeply personal are his songs. He brings out all the pain and loss through the vocals. The alienation is because he doesn’t give us any way to relieve the pain or make up the loss. The closest he comes is in ‘Wake Up’ which calls for tough self-improvement measures: ‘Dug your own grave\Here it is now\it’s your life to save.’

The emotion is matched by the music. Hagen has mined the veins that provide the ore, the raw material for Americana – blues, rock, folk and country. But this isn’t a check-the-box exercise. Hagen has the musical skill to match the sounds with the song. The album opens with drums, then bass and then the organ comes in to create a classic sound for the song ‘Cold Heart’. The next song, ‘Cigarette’, leads with acoustic guitar, joined by electric and slide guitar, which perfectly matches the images of ‘I’ll have no last regret/Just a dose and a cigarette.’ Even the duet with Margo Hansen doesn’t lighten things up with ‘Dyin Alone’. The only more heavily orchestrated number is Hagen’s cover of Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Dreams’ and his manages to make it all his.

Like Hopper’s ‘Nighthawks at the Diner’, ‘Revival’ is emotionally challenging and beautiful. Savour this album slowly, first listening to the careful mixture of music and mood, then allowing yourself to be moved by the memories it revives while marvelling at the magic of the man who put it all together. - Americana UK

"New Music Critique: Eric Hagen"

Hagen’s rich, Southern-fried voice has lots of muscle and growl in reserve, and it smolders just right on “Dying Alone,” where he and guest vocalist Marja Hansen haggle out a hopeless relationship. We really like the song’s guitar tone and the organ, which lends a Gregg Allman vibe. Hagen stays in the heavy, mid-tempo range on “Wake Up,” which has lots of loud/soft dynamic shifts in his voice. The song’s organ excursion again adds an indispensible element to the mix. Next, we’re completely surprised by this artist’s unique cover of Fleetwood Mac/Stevie Nicks’ “Dreams.” Starting with a sombre piano supported by a lofty, otherworldly drone, Hagen’s take on the classic (though maybe too long) is inspired. - Music Connection

"Album Review"

8/10

Eric Hagen has recently signed to Spectra Music Group and this album is his debut release on that label. You can hear the blend of influences in his music from roots to rock, blues and country. His lyrics are raw and impactful as he discusses themes of depression and anxiety. His powerful, gritty vocals act as a wonderful vehicle to deliver these emotive topics. A standout track comes in the form of 'Cold Heart Coming' the opener, where we hear the bass anchoring the groove whilst what sounds like a Hammond B3 organ brings character to the track. The single 'Dying Alone' sees the arrangement take a back-seat as Hagen's voice takes center stage. When Marja Hansen's vocals come in, it adds another layer, taking the song to new heights. Hagen's style reminds me very much of Chris Stapleton. To summarize, it's a really strong record from Hagen and will be a welcome edition to any music lover's collection. - Maverick Magazine

"Eric Hagen - Dying Alone (Single)"

Eric Hagen is a singer-songwriter from Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, whose raw and powerful vocal style has turned heads along with his ability to tell a good story through his stripped-back, Americana/folk songs. Hagen released his debut EP, Crossroads Motel, back in 2021, and now returns with single, Dying Alone, which will feature on his upcoming full-length album.

Hagen states that Dying Alone is “about how a lot of people find themselves in relationships that they feel stuck in… Some people find that even if it’s not a healthy relationship, they think it’s better than dying alone.” He is joined on the track by Marja Hansen who takes lead vocal duties for the second verse and harmonizes with Hagen during the song’s chorus. The combination of a male and female voice gives the lyric a fitting duality.

The song is set to a slow waltz groove and features a typical rock band accompaniment. Patrick Lyons plays a gorgeous slide guitar solo before the final chorus, echoing the bittersweet sentiment of the song that is most prominent in lyrics like “I thought we had love yet between us / You know it’s something to tend like a rose / But just ‘cos the bloom is unseen doesn’t mean that / The flower it ain’t gonna grow”.

With Dying Alone, Hagen continues to prove himself as a great lyricist, and despite the song’s heavy-hearted narrative, its delivery exudes a great deal of hopefulness, emphasizing the fact that love, sometimes, is a very complicated beast. All eyes will be on Hagen as he returns with his full-length album in the not-too-distant future. - The Ark Of Music

"Crossroads Motel Review"

In late 2020, and using the pandemic as inspiration to reflect, Eric Hagen rounded up a star studded, socially distanced lineup of musicians (that he affectionately labelled Red River Revival) and got to work on what would eventually become his brand new EP, Crossroads Motel.

Blending elements of Americana with country and even a little blues, the Sturgeon Bay singer/songwriter has produced an eclectic and expertly crafted EP that is more than worthy of your time.

Released in April of this year, Crossroads Motel was co-produced by Marcus Trana (SöNAMUND, Deathfolk) and Hagen himself. Trana also provided drums, guitar, keys, bass and backing vocals, along with a host of other talented musicians.

The EP’s title track, ‘Crossroads Motel’, is also the album’s opener and sets the scene straight from the off. A simple acoustic guitar is met with the whiskeyed vocals of Hagen, and the track just gets more layered and complex as it progresses.

‘Hope’ has a Bon Iver feel to it, thanks to the incredible pedal steel and slide guitar playing of Patrick Lyons. The talented session musician contributed to the EP from his home in Tennessee, refusing to allow the pandemic to interfere with their work. A beautiful, bluesy tune, ‘Hope’ again allows for Hagen’s vocal talents to shine through.

‘You Know Me Best’ shows a rockier side to the outfit. With undeniable inspiration coming from artists like Jason Isbell and Chris Stapleton, Hagen has successfully managed to find his own unique sound. And it’s a sound he should be extremely excited and proud about.

‘When You Were Young’ takes things down a notch again – a delicate and unguarded song that I believe perfectly sums up who Eric Hagen is as an artist. Confident and passionate vocals that pierce the soul, over a moving and intoxicating soundscape.

Finishing off the (all too short) EP is something a little unexpected. ‘Mercy On My Soul’ is raw, dirty and distorted. Fuzzy guitars and clattering drums are the order of the day here, and even Hagen puts on a more raucous vocal performance. Though it catches you off guard a little, it’s an incredibly catchy, upbeat and hypnotic tune.

The future looks bright for Eric Hagen and Red River Revival. We can’t wait to hear what they come up with next! - Indie Top 39

"Wait All Night"

Taken off his striking five-track ‘Crossroads Motel‘ EP from earlier this year, Eric Hagen and Red River Revival reminds us that it is possible to catch the eye of the one who you desire no matter how long it takes on ‘Hope‘.

Eric Hagen and Red River Revival is an indie Americana/folk/blues/rock and country act based in Door County, Wisconsin. Led by Eric, this is a soulfully expressive band with an honest touch who create that perfect road trip music.

”Hagen has always been around music in some form or fashion. His first words may have even been “Hey Jude”. He grew up listening to records his parents played including The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and Bob Dylan. Many timeless records still influence his music today in combination with newer artists such as Jason Isbell and Chris Stapleton.” ~ Eric Hagen

You feel the calming nature of a truly skilled singer-songwriter who has many a story to tell from his travels. His intricate musicianship is of a really high standard – as his smooth vocals have you lighting the romantic candles – and pouring another cold one with ice, to get the whole picture of this movie-like experience.

‘Hope‘ from the Wisconsin-based indie Americana/folk/blues/rock and country act Eric Hagen and Red River Revival, is the story of wishing that you could spend more time with her as you feel like there is a special bond. Sung with a majestic tone that towers over all your self-doubts and sadness, this is a wonderful effort that has you feeling so reflective.

Sometimes you can’t be together with that true soul who you want at first, as the timing seems to be off every time. That hope of it finally coming together no matter the time of night, keeps you coming back for more.

"No Pain - Live"

Eric Hagen takes this Marcus King tune to the next level with his own rendition. Hagen takes a Blues/Americana spin of this tune that is worthy of a listen. Hagen delivers a powerful performance with his vocals filled with zest, power, and so many emotions. His performance feels like you are sitting there with him as he lays everything out with a certain type of bareness. Listeners should listen to the end as Hagen displays his remarkable skills as a musician with a thrilling solo where the artist just rocks out by freestyling. - The Weekly

"New Music - Eric Hagen "Sometimes""

Sometimes is a pretty slow burner, featuring a waltzy tempo reminiscent of the style of country-rock that became popular in the 60s and 70s. As well as the pretty guitar arpeggios and the cool rhythm section, there’s also a lovely organ to be heard in the background, adding something pretty unique into the track. Eric’s vocals are amazing as ever here, containing a depth of passion and emotion unmatched by his peers. You also need to check out the gospel choir on the chorus, which sounds really beautiful! - York Calling

"INTO THE MUSIC: ERIC HAGEN"

Eric Hagen is more than a country artist. He writes and records songs that are country on the surface, but underneath there's a whole lot of soul. The music of the south—country, soul, gospel, blues—tend to blend with each other very well and Eric has tapped into that. On top of the soulful foundation he lays, the lyrics of his songs are stories and well worth a good listen. He takes a less-is-more approach to recording so his listeners don't just hear whatever he can pack into his songs but rather listen to the stories put to music that is emotionally stirring. A review by Americana UK once said his music is "emotionally challenging and beautiful," a statement that couldn't be any more true. It's time to get acquainted with the challenging and beautiful music of Eric Hagen. - Into the Music
