"Featured Artist - Eric McGrath"

If men are born to do one thing with their life, Eric McGrath was born to make music for the world, with more musical talent than most artists currently peddling their wares in the charts today, we’ve fallen hook line and sinker for the tranquillity and nostalgic rhythms and lyrics of Eric’s music.
After having completed his degree in Chemistry, Eric realised his true calling was music and has since completed a Masters in Music. It’s obvious from the sounds and beat of the music that Eric’s family, in particular his mother’s Spanish heritage, have had an impact on the way it all flows and echoes, with definitive Spanish influences to the sound.

Eric admits to being exposed to a wide variety of music growing up from Antonio Carlos Jobim to Ella Fitzgerald and all that lies between. However Eric’s music is not a simple emulation of all that he grew listening to, rather than copying the work the greats, Eric ha instead crafted his own sound, carving music out with his smooth dry vocals. Listening to the music, we were only further intrigued to learn that all the instruments we heard during the recordings were in fact all played by Eric himself, with the exception of the drums!

Deconstructing the music is not an easy feat as everything we hear on the recording has a vital part of creating such a great sound. This is the kind of music that you have to sit back and allow yourself become absorbed in, there is a life and stories in the lyrics and the music, all of which can only be appreciated with your undivided attention. That is not to say that this is the kind of music that you can’t dance to or make you smile, quite the opposite in fact – there is a life in the music that can take hold of you and even on our first listen we found ourselves singing along to words that we’d never heard before.
The eight tracks all sound different but maintain a natural flow from the first track right through to the end. In particular three of them stand out for us as favourites, ‘Abuelo’, ‘Ripples into Waves’ and ‘A Lost Romance’, while we enjoyed all that we heard, it is these three songs that we’d consider Eric’s best.

‘A Lost Romance’ features a melancholic guitar and a subtle change in Eric’s voice as he paints images of a perilous relationship to the backdrop of Dublin city. ‘Ripples into Waves’ is the perfect example for just how infectious Eric’s music really is, it’s also reminiscent of the music of Simon and Garfunkel, this is a song with real heart. ‘Abuelo’ is the first track on Eric’s demo and it’s not only our favourite but it’s also the best example in trying to describe Eric’s work. All of Eric’s music benefits greatly from his talents with the guitar, an instrument that is so often brutalised by musicians today is played beautifully and is the perfect companion to Eric’s voice.

Artistic, caring and respectful, Eric truly seems to have grasped that music is a real form of art. There is not only a life in his music but a lot of heart and soul too, with Eric clearly drawing on his own personal experiences to craft his words and music. Eric’s voice is young but it is clearly filled with experience something he has fine tuned into an amazing sound, with a lot of depth and warmth and attention to detail in every lyric he sings.

While Eric has no actual album out to date we have had the chance to listen to eight recordings and we genuinely feel privileged to have had the chance to bring his work to you. There is something old to Eric’s sound but that does not mean that is outdated or that it has no place in the music of today. Listening to Eric’s recordings is an experience that everyone should get to share, it is the perfect sound to while away lazy days in the evening, to lose yourself in and to even do some soul searching with.

Bio

Born in Dublin to a Spanish mother and an Irish father, Eric was raised on a healthy mix of eclectic sounds from around the globe. Soon finding a strong love of Latin grooves, 1920's North American song craftsmanship, and 1960's Surf harmonies, it wasn't long before Eric began to blend his diverse inspirations through his own unique compositions.

After completing an honours degree in Chemistry at University College Dublin, Eric finally succumbed to his true calling by obtaining a Masters in Music and Media from Trinity College Dublin.

Having gained significant radio play of his demo EP in early 2011, an eagerly anticipated debut album is due for release in 2012.

It is also worth noting that every instrument heard on his recordings (excluding drums) is played by Eric.

A wider audience awaits...
