It was an early morning in Nashville about one year ago. Eric McMillen sat down to write his first song. He scratched his head for a moment: a rock song…in the vein of Lou Reed…maybe with an existential twist. By the end of the day, the song was complete—“Under the Rising Sun.”
Flash forward to the summer of 2009 and McMillen is preparing to finish his debut LP, No Vice, No Virtue. He teamed up with East Nashville producer, Lij Shaw (Livin’ Things, The Spinto Band, K.S. Rhodes) for an effort that will be a potent combination: smart lyrics, driving rhythms, and tight songwriting. “It will be a rocker,” McMillen says, “It took a year of constant work. I ate ninety-nine cent cheeseburgers for this. I have too much invested for it to suck.
In McMillen’s debut performance at the Basement, owner Mike Grimes concurred, describing him as “knocking it out of the park.” It is no surprise, considering McMillen’s take on performing: “If people walk through the door expecting a great show, then that is what I owe them. A killer show.”
No Vice, No Virtue will be released in August, 2009.
