With a sweet-sounding mix of r&b tinged with gospel and jazz, "Chocolate Soul" seems to be a fitting name for Eric Stinnett's debut recording effort.

The five-track EP has been melting hearts since being released this summer.

The disc's first single, "Whiplash," is already making the rounds of radio stations, and Stinnett is preparing to release a full-length CD in the spring.

A native of Dallas, Stinnett arrived in South Florida to attend the University of Miami. After graduating in 2004, he decided to make the area his permanent home.

"I majored in the business end of the industry with the idea of owning my own label," said the Pembroke Pines resident.

Stinnett hasn't given up on his original plan, but for now he's answering what he calls the lure of performing.

"I began singing at age 5, growing up in the church," said Stinnett, who also plays trombone, guitar and piano.

Stinnett has been keeping busy with solo gigs, but recently cranked up his schedule several more notches with Supaband, an r&b, jazz and soul outfit that he formed this fall with two other locals.

The trio of friends features Stinnett, George Tandy Jr. and Fudakochi sharing vocals. Tandy and Fudakochi play keyboards, too, with a rotating backup group of musicians.

A second side project has Stinnett appearing occasionally as a backup vocalist for Dangerflow, a five-piece hip-hop group out of Miami.

Stinnett performs his solo act weekly at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Legend's Cafe, 2029 Harrison St., Hollywood; 954-920-1312.

Bio

Eric Stinnett is a soulful R&B singer born and raised in Dallas, Texas. While his looks may be reminiscent of the R&B singer Joe, he sounds more like his other influences: Brian McKnight, D’Angelo, Anthony Hamilton, Maxwell, Raphael Saadiq and others from the Neo-Soul movement. Like many other great soul singers, he too honed his early musical gifts singing in the church. He excelled at trombone while playing in several jazz groups and ensembles at the high school & collegiate level. It was there where he discovered a love for jazz and began weaving it into his own gospel and soul-inspired vocal style. His latest project, "Chocolate Soul", embodies this new sound in his live-recorded EP. The first single, "Whiplash" has been getting rotation on Internet radio and in the UK ever since debuting in the Atlanta International Soul Summit 2007.
