Erienne Romaine, a Colorado-based jazz singer born in 1991, has a freewheeling sense of rhythm and a resonant voice that brings out stirring emotions in standards like “Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans?” and “Summertime.” The Scenic Route features an intimate backup group, including the artful jazz pianists Jeff Jenkins and Pat Bianchi. Shortly after this album was recorded, Romaine was diagnosed with cerebral vein blockage, a rare illness that required several operations. Fighting back, Romaine has since recovered and recorded another album, Victory Concert, available on her website, where she states that she is now “particularly keen on celebrating Freedom” — meaning freedom not only from a medical condition, but from her self-judgments. -Benjamin Ivry - Spirituality & Health Magazine
