Bring your family out to Rancho San Rafael Park this evening, and enjoy some free family fun -- including a performance by the rising young singing duo, "Erika and Kelsey," previously called "justBLUSH."

The singers are 14-year-old high school students Erika Davidson and Kelsey Karrasch, who have been performing locally for several years.

"I've been singing practically my whole life," said Erika, a freshman at McQueen High School. "I've always dreamed of becoming a singer with a band or singing group."

Kelsey, a sophomore at Galena High School, agreed.

"I've had kind of the same goals," she said.

"When I'm older, I definitely see myself being a professional recording artist."

The two met when they were both asked to sing in an all-girl group of pre-teen singers. Two-and-a-half years ago, they decided to leave that group and work together as "justBLUSH" -- changing their name to "Erika and Kelsey" just recently.

"They've performed twice for us," said Brent Collamer, staff member at South Valley Library in Reno, "and have been very well received. We've had them here in conjunction with our summer reading program and I know other libraries have had them perform as well." Collamer has seen their popularity grow.

"We had about 55 people last time," he said, "and afterward they even had some fans come up and ask for autographs and people took photos. They're excellent to work with and very professional. They're really dedicated."

Though they use a music track during their performances, both girls also play instruments. Erika plays guitar, and Kelsey plays drums. They're typical teens who have busy schedules. They also receive voice training from Richard Lee.

"Both of these young ladies are very serious students," said Lee, a popular local voice coach. "They like to sing, and they're daring to sing. A lot of the time people pull back, but they both just love to sing; it's their nature."

While their mothers work on publicity and performances for the duo, the rest of their families also have embraced their ambitions. Erika's brother helps with equipment set-ups and Kelsey's six siblings accommodate her budding music career.

And friends are of equal importance.

"Our friends are definitely big supporters of me and Erika," Kelsey said. "All my friends tell me that they're my biggest fans, and they're often the majority of some of our shows. It makes me feel comfortable having friends there when we perform."

Both girls are modest about their success.

"I don't think we're really famous," Erika said, "but we do a lot of shows, and we're known around our town. We're maybe a little famous among the 8- to 10-year-olds." But being famous isn't what it's all about for the duo.

Stefanie D'Arcy, recreation specialist with Washoe County Parks, encourages everyone to come out and hear the duo perform on Sunday evening as part of the family entertainment series which will be held at Rancho San Rafael each Sunday through Aug. 5.

"Admission to the Great Basin Adventure Park is offered for free from 5 to 6 p.m.," D'Arcy said. "Kids can enjoy the log ride and petting zoo. Then, performances are held from 6 to 7 p.m., and we invite families to bring a cooler or picnic and some chairs and just sit down and enjoy themselves. It's all free to the public."

For 16-year-old rising star Erika Davidson, recording her first EP was a dream come true. Erika's self titled debut album, showcases the Reno native's soft yet edgy pop-country sound -- a blend of dynamic vocals and catchy, inspirational melodies. Believing that songs should both entertain and inspire, Erika also wrote the lyrics for each of the album's six tracks. "And she has the work ethic to match."

Drawing from her own experiences and those around her, she would create a great pop sound. With the help from her guitar teacher, Erika was able to find her voice. Putting together catchy melodic hooks, and driving guitar rhythms, her music compels her fans to sing along.

Inspired by artists such as Taylor Swift and Mandy Moore, Erika works constantly to develop her skills as an all-around musician and performer.
