"hunting - album review"

Somewhere in between Beck’s Seachange, Neil Young’s ‘The Needle and the Damage Done’, Nick Cave and Warren Ellis’ soundtrack to The Proposition and The Assassination of Jesse James lies Ernest Ellis’ debut album, Hunting – twelve tracks of brushed drums, thick instrumentals, echoing soft vocals and brooding lyrics - The Brag September 2010 - thebrag.com

"Ernest Ellis is, like, crazy cool. Like, if you implanted the genes of Beck..."

Ernest Ellis is, like, crazy cool. Like, if you implanted the genes of Beck into a cool dude made up of body parts from Kurt Vile, Real Estate and Woods, you’d have the Frankenstein of Ernest Ellis.
On, ‘Black Wire’, the most deadset gut-wrenching indie rock anthem since The Jesus & Mary Chain’s ‘Just Like Honey’, you feel as though you’ve just gone and punched Steve Irwin’s corpse and are dealing with the regret all in one four minute rush. The forehead-creasing anguish that roars quietly in ‘Black Wire’ are, at times, too much, and makes for the next perfect break-up song. When Mr. Ellis mourns, “There’s too much love, there’s too much love, Honey in my head” you want to reach into the song, give him a big hug, and scream, “DUDE, ME TOO! I FEEL YOU DAWG!”. - Soundly Sounds / VICE

Bio

Ernest Ellis formed 4 years ago in their hometown of Sydney. In 2014 they released their third album ‘Cold Desire’ on Spunk Records http://www.spunk.com.au/. The outcome is an atmospheric album full of unflinching honesty and feeling, plenty of primal sleaze and plenty of saxophone. It has been overwhelmingly well received with top slots ‘Album of the week’ and new album showcases on the largest national and independent radio stations of FBi and Triple J network amongst many others. The songs are currently receiving airplay in Germany and the Netherlands 3FM as well as College radio in North America.

They have toured Australia extensively over the last 4 years, which has included their own sold out headlining tours and numerous support slots for: Florence + The Machine, The Strokes, Jamie T, and Neil Finn to name a few.

The band went to New York late last year and played a number of shows at the CMJ music marathon where they were very well received.

Their first signing in 2010 was to Dew Process/Universal Australia only 2 months after forming and they released their first single, 'Heading for the cold', which received high rotation airplay on Triple J and all other Australian independent stations. The band released their debut album ‘Hunting’ in the middle of 2010, which received critical acclaim, and earned them an album package on Triple J (one of Australia’s top 3 national radio stations). Ernest Ellis spent their first year showcasing this with supports for the likes of Florence + the Machine’s national tour, as well as slots at some of the biggest festivals on the circuit such as; Splendour in the Grass, Pyramid Rock and Peats Ridge.

'King's Canyon', was released in 2012 and also generated much critical acclaim, an extensive tour followed throughout Australia and the album has seen two songs being picked up for sync deals on American television programs, 'Hawaii 5.0' and 'Suits'.

The band are very well received for their studio work and live shows. Having started their international jaunts last year at CMJ, New York the band are keen to get out of Australia again and into the overseas markets where they feel their music will be well suited.
