Final Latino showcase features Banda and more

Sunday in the Park (Domingo en el Parque) concludes its three-show series from 3 to 7 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 15. These free shows present the art and culture of Rockford’s Latino community, and are held in beautiful Levings Lake Park, at Montague Street and Johnston Avenue.
The program for Aug. 15 features Banda Aires de Guanajuato, a 17-member group well known in the Midwest, performing selections in the Banda style. Also performing is Escape, a versatile new band that plays a wide variety of music to entertain every age group.
Another highlight will be the final talent show, offering an opportunity for contestants to gain experience and provide entertainment for the whole family. Cash prizes are awarded in two age groups: 5-12, and 13-adult. Finalists from the previous two showcases will compete for the grand prize, an opportunity to record a CD, courtesy of Studio B. The winner will also get radio play/interview on the Spanish language radio program, “El Mariachi Loko,” which airs on WLUV 1520 AM each Saturday and Sunday from 8 to 11 a.m.
Sunday in the Park is coordinated by local businessman Armando Cárdenas, well known as a member of the Mexican band Cardenas III Generación. Performers should call Armando Cárdenas at (815) 282-4489 for information on the talent contest.

Feeling a bit camera shy

Costa Rican bass player Fernando Zumbado has gathered together six of the Midwest’s hottest Latin musicians to form the Regional Latin band Escape. Fronted by two steamy vocal talents, this group presents a versatility and energy unmatched by any band in the region. Hailing from the culturally rich regions of Costa Rica, Colombia, and United States.

Escape has put their talents to work in clubs and major festivals in the Midwest region. Their strong musical aptitude has quickly hit a nerve with regional music fans. As a testament to their outstanding musical ability, Escape managed to attract the attention of the Southern Wisconsin, Northern Illinois Latin music lovers and has been nominated for the coveted RAMI award….for the second time in a row!

Fernando Zumbado, who thanks his experiences in Costa Rica, Panamá, Nicaragua and United States, for his rich cultural musical influences, has shared the stage with well known jazz musicians including drummer Paul Wertico (Pat Metheney), saxophonist Mark Colby, as well as Latin sensations José José, Abracadabra, Los Galos, Sandro, Wilfrido Vargas, Luis Enrique and Oscar de León.
