Sunday in the Park (Domingo en el Parque) concludes its three-show series from 3 to 7 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 15. These free shows present the art and culture of Rockford’s Latino community, and are held in beautiful Levings Lake Park, at Montague Street and Johnston Avenue.
The program for Aug. 15 features Banda Aires de Guanajuato, a 17-member group well known in the Midwest, performing selections in the Banda style. Also performing is Escape, a versatile new band that plays a wide variety of music to entertain every age group.
Another highlight will be the final talent show, offering an opportunity for contestants to gain experience and provide entertainment for the whole family. Cash prizes are awarded in two age groups: 5-12, and 13-adult. Finalists from the previous two showcases will compete for the grand prize, an opportunity to record a CD, courtesy of Studio B. The winner will also get radio play/interview on the Spanish language radio program, “El Mariachi Loko,” which airs on WLUV 1520 AM each Saturday and Sunday from 8 to 11 a.m.
Sunday in the Park is coordinated by local businessman Armando Cárdenas, well known as a member of the Mexican band Cardenas III Generación. Performers should call Armando Cárdenas at (815) 282-4489 for information on the talent contest.
