Bio

A songwriter born and raised in the rolling foothills of North Carolina, e-s guthrie's path has taken some sharp turns to arrive at where he stands today. A child that dabbled in music without ever really getting hooked, his formative years were marked by a few years studying, working, and dreaming in Europe juxtaposed with an eventual degree in electrical engineering and post-graduate work in both engineering and philosophy. All of this set an interesting stage for one who eventually caught the musical 'bug' as a late-bloomer in his mid-twenties.

The curtains finally came up in the wake of September 11th, 2001 simultaneously as the comfort blanket of his first love was unraveling. Exposed, alone, and open to seeing the reality of our oft-unstable world for perhaps the first time in his life, he poured his heart into learning the guitar and refining his sense of song-crafting. Chance encounters in these early years with gifted songwriters such as Ian Thomas, Joshua Pender, Heidi Sidelinker, Alex Lowry, Sarah Bowman, and Adam Payne only served to further fuel his fire, and he now counts them all as family and profound influences on his work.

In 2005 he hooked up with longtime friend and influence Justin Fedor and started playing shows as 'Fedor and Guthrie'. Together they cut their teeth on the road performing regionally until they met Josh Daniel in Charlotte, NC and formed the band 'The New Familiars' in late 2006. In the years that followed, they tore up the highways of the east coast logging thousands of miles and playing hundreds of shows while establishing a reputation for rowdy, feel good performances. But as time passed, guthrie felt he was moving further and further away from his center and the reasons why he started playing music in the first place. In early 2009 e-s announced his intention to leave the band, wished them his blessings, and walked off towards the unknown.

Currently guthrie finds himself wide open as he explores the boundaries of his own potential. He writes songs that speak to his own loves, failures, hopes, and happiness, yet his work carries the capacity to resonate with others via their own experiences. So equipped, he has embraced his new act in this drama known as life, defiantly staring down fear and uncertainty with his shirt sleeves rolled up and a smile on his face. And whenever it may be, he looks forward to meeting you out on the road sometime soon... sharing with you his world, and in turn learning from your own.
