Estrella Acosta

 Amsterdam, North Holland, NLD

Cuban vocalist Estrella Acosta has just released her new single 'Ay Amor' on the eStar label. She sings her original song with a beautiful arrangement by Carlos Irarragorri from Trinidad, Cuba, who plays the guitar, baby bass, Cuban tres guitar, bongos, maracas, keyboards and sings. With all the flavor of the Cuban countryside, 'Ay Amor' talks about love and the magic of nature, while alternating between different dance rhythms.

Cuban vocalist Estrella Acosta is one of the most versatile Latin American singers living in Europe. Though she has never stopped singing the folk songs of her motherland, she is equally at home with Brazilian and jazz styles. With her relaxed phrasing and warm, earthy voice she brings a fresh, innovative approach to Cuban music.

After graduating from the University of Texas at Austin in cultural anthropology she embarked on a trip to pursue her musical dreams that took her to Mexico City, Rio de Janeiro, New York City and Amsterdam, where she now lives. Estrella has performed with many of the world's great musicians including Toninho Horta, Craig Handy, Edy Martinez, Ramon Valle and Jovino Santos Neto, and has been a guest soloist with the renowned Metropole Orchestra.

Her festival appearances include the North Sea Jazz Festival, Curaçao Jazz Festival, the Heineken Jazz Festival, Madison World Music Festival, World Music Chicago and Sunfest Festival in Canada. She also performed at renowned clubs like the BIMhuis (Amsterdam), SOB's (New York City), Ronnie Scott's (London).

Estrella has released three albums for the label eStar. In 1996 she released her first cd, Navegando de La Habana a Rio featuring her lyrics and compositions by participating musicians, Brazilian pianist Luizão Paiva and Uruguayan guitarist Leonardo Amuedo. Her second cd, Alma Guajira - Cuban Country Songs, was nominated for an Edison (Dutch Grammy).

Her third album Esquina 25 was just released. Joined by internationally acclaimed musicians like Leonardo Amuedo, Carlos Irarragorri and Gerardo Rosales she creates an energetic, yet intimate and personal album, rooted in the sounds of her native Cuba.

"I enjoyed every note of the cd... very fresh arrangements and your
voice ?ts them perfectly. I loved the work of the tresero, as well as the
bassist, the guitarist, the tenor player and the rhythm section, very tasty."
- Paquito D'Rivera

Esquina 25 brings together top international musicians from Cuba, Venezuela, Germany, the USA and the Netherlands. They present an original view of Cuban music in a wide spectrum of styles - son, bolero, rumba, guajira, trova, Afro-Cuban jazz and Lucumí chants, performed with plenty of room for creativity and improvisation, and with respect for the tradition.

The music of Esquina 25 pays tribute to the cultural variety that characterizes a Havana street corner where many Cuban writers, musicians and other culture bearers have met and inspired each other over the years - likewise, the band is a meeting point between musicians from different cultures, between Latin and jazz, between tradition and inventivity.

"One of the best recordings of Cuban music realized in Europe...
Estrella Acosta is one of the most versatile caribbean singers of our times."
- Luis Tamargo

She has just released a new single, Ay Amor, with Cuban master tresero Carlos Irarragorri.

Ay Amor and Esquina 25 have been released worldwide - They are available for download from, iTunes, CDBaby, and other sources in both MP3 and audiophile FLAC formats.
