"World beat Canada top 30 march 2012"

"World beat Canada / Press review January 2012 / Novos sons e tradicoes mudernizadas"

No doubt we all have a musical Mecca we hope to someday visit (or several). Pernambuco, a state in the Northeast region of Brazil is high on my list. Not only does it seem like a magical place, with an equatorial climate and miles of beaches, it’s an incubator for some of the most ground-breaking music anywhere. Brazilians are particularly adept at assimilating North American idioms like rock, funk, soul and psychedelic; passing them through their own cultural filter. In the early 90s, the capital of Pernambuco, Recife gave birth to the mangue beat, a name derived from the mangrove marshes that add to the topographical diversity of the area. At the centre of the mangue beat was the late Chico Science and his band Nacao Zumbi who developed a hybrid of modern music elements and local, indigenous rhythms like maracatu and embolada to pioneer a new musical movement. Helping them along the way was a handful of talented artists who share their aesthetic, among them, singer/guitarist, Dirceu Melo. Today, he fronts the dynamic Pernambuco combo, Eta Carinae (named for the brightest star in the Milky Way). With Catarina Rosa providing additional vocals and percussion, Sanzyo Dub on acoustic drums sampled sounds and Rapha Groove on bass, they’ve released their second album, Novos sons e tradicoes mudernizadas or ‘New sounds and updated traditions’. You gotta like that kind of truth in advertising! The disc delivers beautifully on both counts. Despite an abundance of digital gadgetry and tripped out vibes, there remains at the core, a very organic feel to Eta Carinae’s sound. Combining both retro and fashion-forward electronic textures, the band builds their compositions on regional rhythms like baiào, forró and samba. Eta Carinae’s music plays on western ears like starlight to the eyes; emanating from a distance, but nonetheless welcoming. - World beat Canada

"SONGLINES / Reggaeish rock from north-east Brazil / Abril 2012"

Pernambuco state has long been a hotbed of some Brazil’s most innovative music, led by artists such as DJ Dolores and brought to the UK via compilations such as Luaka bop’s What Happening in Pernambuco? Brazil’s north-east is home to a boundary pushing scene that mixes some of the more well-known sounds one might associate with Brazil with less predictable Afro-Brazilian influences and electro.
While Dolores takes his music in a more dance-oriented direction , Eta Carinae’s sound is more rooted in rock with occasional tinge of reggae. You will hear they certainly aren’t afraid to mix things up. There are definite electro and psychedelic edges to much of their music, more obviously on the dance-floor thumping “Deep Space”, which turns full-on hard trance after a couple of minutes. This is , however, the track that works the least well on the album and they would have been advised to leave it out. Because the rest of it is a success: a combination of that slightly sleepy lyrical singing style that Brazilians do so well with (from vocalists Catarina Rosa and Dirceu melo) combined with electric guitar , drums , sample and the Korg Kaoss effects pad , used when they want to mash things up a bit. Highlights include the laidback re-worked samba “Inverno do samba”, which tries out a bit of Drum’n’bass and the closing “Dubaião” which , as the same suggests, is a dub track featuring some fun samples in English and Portuguese.

"Sfinks festival 2009 - Programma - text about the group"

Eta Carinae, astronomers are well aware, is the brightest star in our galaxy. A name for the new ambitious project of Dirceu Melo, a star who has won at the brightness scene of Pernambuco /Brazil.

As lead singer and guitarist of the group “Jorge Cabeleira” He was a driving force behind the manguebeat, sensation of the nineties.

This movement gave a new look at the wealth of traditional rhythms of northeastern Brazil, they mix with global elements and it avoids the premature death of these rhythms.

Eta Carinae performs this operation for rejuvenation. In his first CD, "Mirando a Star", there are electronic beats mixed perfectly with baião, forró, samba, rock and reggae. Mission’s manguebeat in modern form, seems to succeed.

FESTIVALES EN LA PROVINCIA – PIRINEOS SUR

Batidora brasileña

"Mistura Brasileira"
