Bio
Etao Shin was formed in 2009 when Joe Kelly, Steve Haynes and Ben Kill came together in order to play some songs that Kelly had written for his final year university project. However, “half of the songs we played needed a string quartet and I was constantly swapping instruments,” says Kelly, “so we stripped it down to just guitar, bass and drums to keep things simple for now”.
In its current incarnation, the band has gained a large following through live shows around Southampton, with its fiercely individualist style that combines tight rhythms and messy improvisation with inventive songwriting.
The band have recently supported the likes of Laurel Collective, Hind Ear and Haunted Stereo, in between recording sessions for their debut.
The resulting EP, The Shame Of Life, is an exciting blend of jangly guitars, syncopated rhythms and chanting mantras, in the vein of Minutemen or early Talking Heads. Performed with a kind of casual virtuosity these three original tracks show a minimalist approach to big ideas.
The EP title, The Shame of Life, was uttered in a moment of insight by Kill’s 3 year old son Archie upon failing to complete a jigsaw puzzle.
