Chàng thanh niên khá điển trai tên khai sinh; Thôi Cẩm Thanh, tuổi Thìn, sinh quán tại Saigon nhưng quê ngoại tại Nha Mân, tỉnh Đồng Tháp, còn quê nội tuốt tận bên Tàu. Cậu bé Thanh thích hát ca từ nhỏ nhưng cha mẹ lại muốn cậu chú tâm vào việc học. Thanh định cư tại Úc vào năm 1986 tại thành phố Melbourne, sau trung học là vào đại học LaTrobe, một trong những đại học nổi tiếng của Úc, với ngành Medical. Sau đó tốt nghiệp Bachelor of Medical Record Administration, sinh viên Thanh tiếp tục học thêm Acting, thanh nhạc và dancing.

Khi lên sân khấu ca hát, nếu trình diễn cho khán giả người Úc Thanh chọn tên Ethan Thoi và nếu hát cho đồng hương lại có tên là I Thanh. Chàng ca sĩ hát song ngữ cắt nghĩa nghệ danh của mình: viết là I, nhưng phát âm là Y như Y Phụng (nữ ca sĩ trẻ đẹp của trung tâm Asia, con của cặp nghệ sĩ Minh Phụng & Kiều Tien). Đoán được sự “khó nhớ” của khán giả với 2 tên Ethan Thoi và I Thanh, chàng ca sĩ họ Thôi dùng tên duy nhất: Ethan Ithanh! Bạn bè lại khoái gọi ngắn gọn là Ithanh.

Thời gian sống tại thành phố Melbourne, Ithanh cộng tác với ban nhạc Viễn Phương và là giọng ca nam chủ lực, trong thời gian 5 năm. Ithanh còn đóng phụ diễn trong phim với Paul Hogan, tài tử chính trong bộ phim Crocodile Dundee và chàng còn đóng các phim quảng cáo, có thời gian Ithanh còn gia nhập đoàn nghệ thuật Kita.

Một lần theo bạn bè thăm Sydney, Ithanh cảm thấy thoải mái ngay với không khí văn nghệ tại đây nên chính thức dọn về thành phố này và ra mắt trong nhiều chương trình ca nhạc cuối tuần, trong tiêc cưới và các sinh hoạt của Cộng đòng người Việt tại đây.

Ithanh gia nhập hội Văn nghệ trẻ VN Úc châu –The Vietnamese Youth Arts Organisation- được thành lập năm 2003, do nữ Nhạc sĩ Nguyễn Ánh Hoa là Hội Trưởng. Hội quy tụ phần lớn các anh chị em đang hoạt động trong các lãnh vực ca hát, viết nhạc, soạn kịch, vẽ tranh ảnh tại Sydney. Đáng kể nhất vào tháng 9 năm 2006, hội này thành công trong buổi ra mắt và phát hành DVD đầu tay, được đặt tên “Mưa Chiều Sydney Ta Nhớ Saigon” mà phần lớn các nhạc phẩm do chính Ánh Hoa sáng tác cả phần nhạc lẫn lời. Ithanh góp tiếng hát và thành công với bản nhạc Tiếng Gọi Trùng Dương. Khán giả hài lòng với dáng vóc cao “sáng sân khấu” và gịong hát có phần mượt mà như Danh Ca Nhật Trường....

Đầu tháng 10/2006, Ithanh được người quen cho biết ban giám đốc vở nhạc kịch Miss Saigon dự định lưu diễn tại Úc châu vào năm 2007 và đoàn đang tuyển thêm các diễn viên và ca sĩ. Ithanh đến diễn thử (audition) với Miss Saigon Musical. Sau 3 giai đoạn “audition”, tháng 12/2006, Miss Saigon Musical chính thức tuyển Ithanh.

Đầu năm 2007, Miss Saigon mở cuộc lưu diễn 18 tháng tại Úùc- Tân Tây Lan. Tháng 3/2007 đoàn trình diễn tại thành phố Perth, sau đó là Melbourne, Brisbane.

Ithanh was born in Saigon. I was an orphan
in a poor home. I have never met my
biological parents and was adopted by a
Chinese couple.
I resettled in Melbourne, Australia in June
1986.
I fell in love with music and singing when I
was only 5 years old in Vietnam. I was
always asked to perform for school events.
But my family was strict and wanted me to
study to become a doctor, a lawyer and/or
engineer. In order to be a good son, I
concentrated on my study and obtained a
degree in Medical Record Administration.
Nothing near what they expected, but I think
they were happy that I finished university.
(Phew!) I also studied singing, dancing and
acting in Melbourne. The entertainment
industry in Australia is very competitive and
especially for an Asian, I had to study
everything so that I can be versatile as a
performer to get work in this industry.
My first professional job was working as a
dancer on an American cruiseship of the P&O
lines. I then went to Malaysia and danced for
Andy Lau and Hacken Lee on one their visits
to the country.
I then returned Australia and landed a TV role
in an Australian TV series called Marshall
Law. I then did a film with Paul Hogan (the
original Crocodile Dundee actor). But my
heart was with Vietnamese music. So I made
a few trips back to Vietnam and learned the
vocal techniques there. Since then I have
been singing for the Vietnamese communities
in Australia for about 4 years.
I am now rehearsing for Miss Saigon musical
which was a hit in Westend, London and
Broadway, New York. We will have our first
preview on 17th March in Melbourne and then
touring around Australia and New Zealand.

But whenever I get a day free, I still accept
booking to sing for the Vietnamese weddings
or ballroom venues (“da vu”). I have been
living in Sydney, Australia for 2 years.
I love my Vietnamese songs. Miss Saigon
musical is a challenge and an opportunity for
me to enrich my skills as a performing artist
with a new perspective. I hope to use that to
bring into my Vietnamese singing career.
2. How did you know about this contest?

I have a friend who is really supportive of my
Vietnamese singing career. He and his wife
notified me of this contest and told me “nêu
bây gi( mà không ñi thì khi nào m-i ñi ñây”.
I never liked competition because I believed
that there is no right or wrong in arts. It is
just a matter of taste. It is in the eyes and ears
of the beholder. But I was convinced that it is
one in a lifetime opportunity so I took his
advice and just went ahead with it even
though at that time I did not know much about
the price and contest. I just thought it would
be a good chance to be exposed and be able to
perform for the Vietnamese community in
America.
3. How was your reaction when you found
out that you got into the national

I was so excited. And my first reaction is “I
have not disappointed those who supported
me” and that the long trip from Australia was
worth it.
4. Tell the reader what songs you
performed and why you picked those

In the preliminary round, I chose “Sau Mot
Tinh Yêu” because this is a beautiful love
song that has lyrics which I believed everyone
can relate to and it has different colors in the
vocal tones (for example, soft tone, head
voice, falsetto, and also can belt out). In the
semifinal, I chose “Tim Em Là C7a Riêng
Anh” because it is a dance song and I wanted
to show the judges some funky moves that I
have choreographed for myself because I
thought the judges were looking for someone
with a whole package as a performing artist. I
learned that many singers now have to also do
live concerts as well as recording, so we need
to have the skill of dancing and acting as well
to create a memorable concert because live
concerts are for watching as well as listening.
And in the final I chose a medley of “Sóng Vê
ðâu” và “Tim Em Là C7a Riêng Anh”,
because I personally love both the older songs
as well as the really new songs. And also
these 2 songs allowed me to show both of the
skills of just singing and singing and dancing
and performing that I have learned.
5. What was your experience when you
were standing in front of the judges?

I was honoured to be judged by them. I have
respect for these judges. I have seen them in
DVDs and I finally had the opportunity to see
them face to face.
