Bio
I am influenced heavily by soul, jazz, and gospel music. I grew up in Pine Bluff, Arkansas listening to Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, The Clarke Sisters, Tramaine Hawkins, Shirley Caesar and many others. Some of my new favorites include Choklate, Algebra Blessett, Kindred, Anthony David, and KiKi Sheard. My biggest influence is definitely gospel. I come from a long line of gospel singers. My mom, in particular, is a big influence. She has what I call seasoning to her voice. One day, I hope to have half the power she has when she sings.
The thing that sets me apart from the rest is that I'm not trying to keep up appearances. I have a message to bring and everyone is not going to receive that message; but if one person does, that makes it all worthwhile and my job is done. I'm singing about issues that plague our communities and that face our children. I'm singing about spirituality and a quest for true righteousness. It's important for me to be real in my music and let people know who I am, where I come from, and what I see.
