"Eureka Stockade Album Review"

Welcome to Eureka Stockade, one of the finest indie bands to grace the Cambridge music scene in quite a while. I first had the privilege of hearing their guitar induced pop sensibilities a couple of years ago at The Corner House, Cambridge and have since witnessed the growth of both the band and the fan base first hand.

2010 proved particularly successful, with a number of prestigious gigs, a festival appearance at Windsor’s very own Trystonbury and a record deal with Crackin’ Tunes. The promise of this album had been lingering for a while, and it was well worth the wait.

It’s hard to believe that this self-titled album is a debut release, with its impeccably crafted pop songs that hide behind a wall of jangly guitars and ambiguous lyrics, Eureka Stockade have created an sound that pays homage to the likes of early R.E.M., Pearl Jam and The Smiths. Songs leave you with a feeling of nostalgia and a longing for a past that wasn’t your own just as its predecessors did.

The raw live sound is still there but has been enhanced with some ambitious overdubbing, made possible by a host of guest musicians including Katrina Polfrey (vocals on 'Broken Pieces'), Anna Scott (cello), Dave Greeves (pedal steel guitar) and Kerry Lambert (piano).

Go check this album out, I guarantee that as soon as you hear the electric guitar come in on Erotomania you’ll love this band.

Available now on iTunes and Spotify, highlights include Erotomania, Sharks and Violence. - The Beat Surrender

"Brand Spanking New - Eureka Stockade Album Review"

Cambridge; famed for punting, quaint old buildings, and some very intellectual looking students wandering about the place.

Perhaps Cambridge-based indie-rock band Eureka Stockade will be added to the list. Band members Andy Brown, Rob Toulson, Nathan Jones and Paul Richards released their first self-titled album through Cracking Tunes Records on December 6.

Despite their fairly modest composition of, in their words, “four scruffy musicians, a couple of guitars and a rhythm section”, their music is a lot more polished.

The album is a pleasant mix that crosses several genre boundaries; rock, folk, acoustic, with nods to some huge acts that no doubt bear a considerable influence on the band’s work. For instance, tracks All Alone and Heroes Fall has some great vocal work that has echoes of R.E.M‘s Michael Stipe, whereas Violence is much more punchy, as the title suggests, and is definitely reminiscent of Manic Street Preachers.

There is a good variation of tempo and atmosphere within the album, which features quieter moments; Without You is laid back and folky, and Sharks takes it down a gear further, with an evocative and raw combination of forlorn vocals with a gentle piano background, played by Kelly Lambert – just one of the guest performers to appear on the album.

It’s a strong first album that, granted, will probably not gain a cult indie following, or a Mercury Music Award as the tracks are clearly geared for the mainstream, but that’s where the money is, right?

Eureka Stockade’s album is available on Bandcamp.

"Eureka Stockade :: All Alone"

This just in… Eureka Stockade, my favorite alt-country band from the other side of the pond have just released their latest single “All Alone”. As with their previous tracks we’ve shared here, the sound feels much more like Georgia or Tennessee rather than England’s Cambridge. But between the steel guitar (which I’m always a sucker for), the ambiance set by the cello, the joyous drumming, and the earnestness felt in the Michael Stipe-like vocals…I don’t really care where they are from.

Once again, Eureka Stockade deliver well crafted musicianship, meaningful lyrics, and a soulful delivery. Talent, genuineness, uniqueness. Across all genres, those are the qualities we applaud here at Froglix. - Froglix Radio (Washington DC)

Bio

Eureka Stockade deliver their unique blend of indie-rock with energy, angst, emotion and grace. On paper it all looks rather simple; a bunch of scruffy musicians in a small rehearsal space, a couple of Fender guitars, a skintight rhythm section and occasional strings. But beneath the simplistic indie-rock ideals, the hard-working Cambridge folk of Eureka Stockade have quietly been brewing a musical storm; joint frontmen Andy Brown and Rob Toulson have written an accomplished series of tracks that dip genres on a frequent basis, keeping the listener on tenterhooks with catchy melodies sitting delicately alongside deeper, acoustic-led ballads whilst forever remaining rhythmically charming. As soulful as they are energetic, Eureka Stockade have slowly but surely created a buzz for their eclectic live performances, whilst the lengthy hours spent recording surface in the shape of their self titled debut album, released by local label Cracking Tunes. With enough driving passion to impress even the most cynical of listener, but with enough instant catchy hooks to become festival favourites, Eureka Stockade are a band very much living up to their potential.

Particular highlights throuigh 2011 include live performances at The Secret Garden Party, The Wish You Were Here Festival, Stortfest, Strawberry Fair and at the beautiful High Barn venue in Essex. As well as live radio performances for BBC Introducing and numerous other radio stations. Eureka Stockade very much suit the festival vibe and always receive a charming and effervescent response!
