"Tailor Made For NPR"

"Evan's four song EP - Bridge & Tunnel - is a character study as opposed to another singer looking for a catchy riff to hold his sophomore year philosphical questions. Too many artists are simply asking generic questions in clever word play. Evan avoids this trap and approaches life with a much more optimistic, down-to-earth sensibility.

Opening with Separate Ways, you been hard-pressed to not want to make a Ryan Adams comparison. Evan challenges himself by tracking a two guitar sounds and some synths to make a ear catching first track.

The song that really grabbed me was the beautiful Words. A delicate picked riff is accompanied by tone setting cello of Rebecca Perea and some simple keys. I'm a fan of the UK attitude of not being ashamed to have a song on the radio, and Words is tailor made for NPR listeners."

Bio

“Music offers us some kind of connective power…you’re always in good company with music on the box” says Manhattan born singer/songwriter Evan Duby. Evan’s artful mix of folk, roots, and Americana music plays like a soundtrack for people searching for meaning and relatedness. From the silly-heart sway of “Separate Ways” to the sense of dislocation present in “Words”, Evan’s intimate performances are drawing people into a community where a shared experience is created on a nightly basis.

Evan was raised in New York, has lived in Boston and currently makes the Connecticut shore town Stamford his home. Growing up in a house built around a deep vinyl collection, Evan’s perspective was shaped at an early age by records like Dylan’s Blonde on Blonde, Van Morrison’s Astral Weeks, and Springsteen’s Nebraska.

But while others were coming of age, Evan spent time finding his purpose. Duby's list of previous jobs reads like a cast of characters from a Tom Waits song: dog track handler, stock operator, grave digger. With a lifetime of rambling as a young man, songwriting became an organic means of sorting things out. This process of searching is alive in Duby’s latest work entitled Bridge & Tunnel.

Produced by indie music veteran Philip A. Jimenez, (Wheatus, Beat Radio, Easy Anthems), the characters on Bridge & Tunnel seem to be taking a long hard look in the mirror, asking themselves the difficult questions, and realizing the most powerful lies are the ones we tell ourselves. Duby is blessed with the talent to be able to tack these themes without pretense. There is no heavy handed emotional melodrama. He steers clear of the pseudo-self help musings a lesser songwriter might try to pass off as philosophy. Instead the characters in these songs face the challenges before them with a robust optimism and a critical eye. "Now I see, now I see," Duby sings in the "Separate Ways," the EP's opening track, "there is no other way."

Bridge & Tunnel stands as invitation for those who want to follow their hearts and fully engage life. Fans who have been to one of Evan’s shows are taking that ride with him. “My favorite part of performing is getting someone unfamiliar with my music to see how my life intersects with theirs…somehow after 10 songs we can get a whole lot of living in.” With honest vocals and subtly arrangements, Evan’s music finds contemporary comparisons in Josh Ritter, Damien Rice, and Ryan Adams.
