"EVER-G Returns With His Refreshing Throwback Sound"

EVER-G returns with his third album, cementing his refreshing throwback sound. As with his previous effort, this one hearkens back to the classic reggae of the early ‘70s, in part because the music from that era is liberally revisited, including “Teach Us to Love” (Culture’s “Two Seven’s Clash”), “In Love With Jah” (Alton Ellis’s “I’m Still in Love With You,” recently a hit again courtesy of Sean Paul), and “True to Myself” (the legendary Sound Dimension instrumental “Real Rock”). Overall, however, the riddims on Mission are perhaps not quite as readily recognizable as on Independence, so there’s less chance of a recycled feel. Adding to the nostalgic vibe are EVER-G’s dreamy melodies, evocative harmonies, and soulful delivery (at times reminiscent of the Wailing Souls’ Winston “Pipe” Matthews). His style here is along the lines of Glen Washington and Alpheus, who frequently adapt Studio One’s classic music. Even if the rhythms sound familiar, though, EVER-G manages to breathe fresh life into them with professional skill, a sense of fun, and a genuine sentiment, whether crooning love songs like “Goodbye” and “Every Woman” or cultural statements like “Run Babylon” and my favorite track, “Mission.” Other highlights include “Love Is Stronger Than Hate,” “Teach Us to Love,” “Pretense,” and “What’s Up With the World.” - www.reggae-reviews.com

Hampton's Everett Streete, a k a Ever-G, is getting some deserved exposure for his disc "World Peace," released earlier this year. Streete recorded the collection of original reggae tunes with musical partner Vincent James, a k a Biggs. And "World Peace" is a competent, confident work. In recent months, Streete has plugged his disc on three radio stations: Hampton University's WHOV- FM (88.1), Norfolk State University's WNSB-FM (91.1) and a commercial station in Binghamton, N.Y. Streete is a veteran of the Hampton Roads reggae scene, having played in both Bottom Lion and Sonz of the Most High.

"LOCAL MUSIC SCENE IS WORTHY OF MORE ATTENTION: REGGAE"

Ever-G, "Independence"

Ever-G, the stage name used by Hampton's Everett Streete, is a familiar figure on the local reggae scene. "Independence" represents a triumph for the stalwart singer and musician. Made at Chesapeake's Woodhouse Recording in Chesapeake, the disc is full of positive vibrations and irresistible classic Jamaican sounds.

Best of all, a mood of happiness hangs over the tunes. Ever-G generally avoids the darker, politically heavy side of Jamaican music. He'd rather throw a fun, celebratory conscious party. "I love the drums and I love the bass, sound so good would you like a taste?" he sings on the disc's first cut "Let Jah Music Play." Skittering guitar lines and easy bouncing keyboards dance across the top of a deep groove. And Ever-G's voice -- soulful and oozing Sam Cooke-style charm -- has never sounded better.

Lyrical themes on the disc match the feel-good nature of Ever- G's grooves. "Miss Beautiful" is a love letter to the musician's mother. "I will always love you, as long as I trot this Earth," Ever- G sings. "You always remind me of who I am and where I'm from." On the UB-40-ish "Yardie," the singer celebrates his Jamaican heritage. "Stand up and take your place, love yourself and be proud of who you are," he advises. "Persevere and be strong, use all the cards in your deck."

Roots reggae fans should rejoice that Ever-G is doing just that.

GRADE: A-MINUS

"EVER-G PUTS OUT CLASSIC REGGAE WITH A CONTEMPORARY KICK"

MAY 5, 2004

Like all good contemporary reggae artists, Ever-G’s influences are obvious here. His singing career started at age four in the church, and he grew up listening to the obligatory reggae greats (Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, Dennis Brown). But other influences make themselves apparent in his music. There’s a deep presence of American soul there (I can’t quite place it—maybe some Sam Cooke and James Brown), and the genre leans heavily toward the ska side of Jamaican music. Songs such as “Let Jah Music Play” and “Yardie” seem to equally emulate the styles of early Marley, classic ska artists such as the Skatalites, and the newer sounds of the Specials and Hepcat. The aforementioned “Yardie” is arguably the best track on the record, closely followed by the spirited “Trials and Tribulation” and the classic reggae “Let Jah Music Play.”

But enough about influences. The best thing about Ever-G is the fact that he has taken his influences and transformed them into his own sound. The songs on Independence are not completely similar to the dance-friendly, spiritual vibes of Bob Marley, nor are they as politically charged as Peter Tosh’s work. Ever-G’s songs are enlightening without being too serious and danceable without being too light-hearted. In a word, this album is happy. It makes me want to dance as if I didn’t care if people saw how bad of a dancer I am.

"MISSION Takes You On A Ride Through Time"

Mission part III is the third album from Ever-G. The album takes you on a ride through time, with all the greatest riddims like “Real Rock”, “One Step Beyond” also called “Bobby Babylon”, “Mr. Brown” and music from classic songs like “Natty sings hit Song”, “Two Sevens Clash”, “I’m still in Love with You”. All these elements plus the soulful voice of Ever-G, gives the album a sense of familiarity. This album is very upbeat feel good type of vibe. My favorite tracks are, Mission, which is the title track, Pretense, and Teach us love. Give it a Listen

Bio

Everett Streete (EVER-G)
Recording Artist, Songwriter and Musician
EVER-G, born Everett G. Streete, has been exercising his musical gift since the tender age of 4 where he started singing at church and school functions. Born in the small district of Cash-Hill, Hanover Parish, Jamaica, EVER-G grew up listening to Reggae legends such as Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer and Dennis Brown. As a young man, he was also particularly fascinated and intrigued by Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions because of their intricate harmonies. Although these artists influenced him and the development of his musical style, G still managed to remain original and true to his own style of music. Over the years, EVER-G has truly formulated a unique, sophisticated sound, and continues to grow and evolve with passionate musical creativity.

As EVER-G attended Mt. Hannah Elementary School in Jamaica, he always enjoyed singing and performing whenever and wherever the opportunity presented itself. A scholarship took him to Rusea's High school, where he was privileged to perform with the school band at age 14. Two years later, he performed as the lead vocalist with the band. After graduating from high school, EVER-G went on to college and became the lead vocalist for the college band, also playing keyboards and guitar. This placed him in the public's eye and resulted in him appearing with other groups all while gaining exposure. During these early days of his musical career, he was also fortunate enough to create his “first recording at Bob Marley’s Tuff Gong Recording Studio, in Kingston, Jamaica. At this time, he was lead singer for the group "Children of Jah".

During all of this growing up, EVER-G's two loving parents and siblings were always looking out for him. Then, in 1984, EVER-G made the decision to migrate to the United States leaving his parents, one brother and two sisters behind in Jamaica. One of his brothers lives in England and two sisters reside in Canada. A very short time after arriving on the East Coast of the United States, EVER-G became known for his singing and for playing the Rhythm Guitar. In demand, he continued to gig, produce, and share within the American musical community. In 1997 EVER-G recorded and co-produced his first project in the US, a critically acclaimed CD for GurneyMan entitled Jah Gave Us Music.

In the late 1990’s EVER-G released his debut solo CD titled World Peace. His sophomore project Independence was released a few years later. EVER-G’s third and most recently released CD is appropriately titled Mission – It is said by some to be his best work yet. Mission tackles some of life’s most intense issues, from World War to environmental destruction to the agony and bliss of many forms of Love. It also offers practical wisdom and solutions, all based on the foundation of Goodness and Peace. It truly resonates EVER-G’s mission—one of Love and Harmony, and does so through the masterful sounds and rhythms of Reggae music. It demonstrates EVER-G’s growth as a master musician and as an authentic searcher of Life, willing to share his story with ALL. Each of the three CDs received rave reviews and are known for their positive, upbeat messages. For these releases, EVER-G has gained a great following by those who appreciate original roots reggae music. The uplifting and inspiring lyrical content have encouraged many a listener. EVER-G writes, arranges, produces and performs lead vocals for his CDs.

EVER-G & The Crew include EVER-G as lead vocalist, The Irieites as back-up singers, and The Crew which is the band. The Crew consists of 4 veteran musicians who have performed with several international reggae artists such as Joseph Hill & Culture, The Itals, The Abyssinians, Lucky Dube, Everton Blender & Mikey Dread.

EVER-G's music is inspired by what he most believes in; Jah, Peace, Love, Family and Life. It is such an honor to share with all of you reflections on these themes through the power of music.

Peace & Blessings,
EVER-G
