"This Is Dramacore (5/5) (Finnish)"

Eestiläinen Ott Evestus on äärimmäisen mielenkiintoinen ilmiö industrial metalin joskus vähän turhankin perinteisessä maailmassa. Monissa liemissä keitetty herra julkaisi ensimmäisen soolonsa kuusi vuotta sitten ja This Is Dramacore on jo kolmas pitkäsoitto. Materiaali äänitettiin kiireettä vuosien 2006-2009 välillä ja (You´re Not Good Enough to Be My) Enemy sekä Sacrifice julkaistiin jo kaksi vuotta sitten singleinä.

So suicide is out of fashion
And Manson lost his fucking balls
Trent has found a happy place now
Where the hell am I to fall?

Kitarat, rummut ja raivoisat elektroniset industrial-ryöpyt kohtaavat tasaveroisina koskettimet, viulut ja sellot. Osa kappaleista lähtee ennakkoluulottomasti tavoittelemaan taivaita ja joidenkin biisien välissä kuullaan kertojaääntä, mikä vain lisää teatraalisuutta entisestään. Usein näin tummilla vesillä liikkuvat bändit sortuvat julistukseen, kylmään kliinisyyteen tai tahattomaan komiikkaan, mutta Evestuksen onnistuu välttää jokainen näistä sudenkuopista. Itsemurhasta kertova Dramajunkie kääntää partaterän itse yrittäjää kohtaan, joka on sallinut elämänsä mennä raiteiltaan. Mitä kaikkea rakastammekaan, siitä kertoo irvokas So In Love ja Demons of Fame avaa kuuluisuuden kiroja hiukan poikkeuksellisesta suunnasta.

Vaikka kappaleisiin on ladattu suunnaton määrä tietoa, ääntä ja asiaa, eivät ne tukahdu painonsa alle. Orkesterisovitukset tukevat raskaita raitoja ja Evestuksen visio täydellisestä industrial-albumista näyttää toteutuneen juuri siten kuin pitikin, eikä ainuttakaan kompromissia tarvinnut edes tehdä. - Noise.Fi

"This Is Dramacore (9/10)"

Evestus is an Estonian more or less one-man-based band that released it's debut album in 2004, and after numerous delays since 2006 got it's third album released now in 2010. The whole concept that the artist refers to as "Dramacore" was intensely worked on for years, and now is the time to see what it eventually turned into.

It certainly shows that the album wasn't made in a day, as the songs have a huge amount of very different elements working together. The industrial- and electro-genres are featured from some simpler ambience, synths and electronics to really heavy and simple drum programmings, to some samples and a lot of varying electronic sounds, both warm and cold. Team this up with nu-metal vocals, occasional distorted guitars and drums, sideshow-instrumentation and cellos - and what you'll have is a crude overview. It's pretty astonishing when one thinks about the mere amount of sounds on the album, and the only ones that don't really fit in are the oddly cheery oriental synths in "Leftovers."

Due to the massive amount of different sounds and elements, it's quite a challenge to try to grasp the musical whole. Overall it could be described as a mix of classical instruments and ways of composing, nu-metal and such heavier music overall, and really dominant industrial elements that cover the spine that's formed by the before mentioned core-elements. For example, one thing dominant almost throughout the whole album is a really powerful, heavy and simplistic snare drum programming that sets the pace for the album. It sets the power levels and the pace throughout the album, and keeps the whole album strongly rhythmic even in the parts when it would be otherwise ambient-esque and classical-based.

The atmospheres and emotions vary from distant and sarcastic to aggressive ones, to some calm and soothing ones to desperate and even a couple of even cheery ones - although the latter ones aren't as evident as the dominant darker moods. The album is constantly on the move, be it from rock-based parts to classical or industrial ones to even some retro and sample-based sideshow moments, but somehow manages to stay logical for the whole journey. I would say that you need to listen to the whole album from it's beginning to the end to really get the whole picture, as the songs might feature elements that wouldn't fully work on their own but are essential when thinking about the whole album's progress.

Lyrically the band deals with modern world anxiety and stress, along with going through the whole industrial scene and the overall things that were on Evestus' mind while working on the album. It all sums up to a more or less sarcastic manifest of still being alive, and is overall of enjoyable quality. It'll be interesting to see where the artist focuses on his next record, now that he's spilled out such an amount of frustration. The vocalist's voice might be a bit one-dimensional and lacking in edge, but it still has the charisma and variation to pull through the album and to deliver the lyrics.

This album is massive. It features many familiar elements, but they're teamed so that the end result sounds original and even unique. It's quite a heavy listening experience at first, but it starts to open up slowly through the following numerous listens. The artist has his own vision, and he really polished, edited and adjusted it until it was done. It might've been better if he had left the most out-there experiments off, such as the short jazz-piano part in the last track and the oriental synths mentioned in the first paragraph. The "hidden" outro could've also been executed so that it would be less of a bore when thinking of the album's practicality and enjoyability in frequent use. It unnecessarily lenghtens the album, too.

If you're looking for something new and daring within the field of industrial and industrial rock, do check this band out. The detailed and extensive visual side should provide a lot for your senses, too.

"This is Dramacore (4/5)"

Maybe one or another of our readers has heard about the Estonian Goth-Rock producer and multi-talented artist EVESTUS, who can look back on some releases available via the Canadian D-Trash Records label. EVESTUS is not only the name of the band-project, but also the surname of Ott Evestus, the responsible mastermind of nearly all musically activities under this name. Although 'This Is Dramacore' is already out since a few months, I nevertheless feel the need to write some lines about this artistically valuable kind of work, because already the packaging and style of the booklet, as well as the intensely provided background information including bio, complete discography, and, and, and, about this artist are remarkable and I have seldom discovered anything comparable before. The booklet art reminds a bit on an old newspaper exemplar with an astonishing photo art. EVESTUS currently isn't signed to any label, as this one turns out musically to be a bit away from the rather Electronica-oriented label program D-Trash normally offers. Goth-Rock featuring some mighty guitar loops and cynical lyrics is one element, but EVESTUS also integrates a filthy sounding form of a typical Coldwave-related rhythm- and synthesizer-programming, as well as uncountable voice-samples inserted into the mix. This is in all a brooding misture, which receives some excellent moments through orchestral-like string sounds in a catchy manner, so I am quite fine with those rather calm tunes like 'Sacrifice' (also released as a Maxi-Single via Legendaarne ' this track has caused some promising reactions by the listeners in the Baltic and Scandinavian regions...), 'Pikachu Warriors' (yes, it's truly Pikachu...), or 'Gone'. One remarkable fact taken out of the outstanding info-sheet I don't like to hide for you: Both of Evestus' parents are bikers and his father is the president of Ãsel Motorcycle Club, one of the largest bike gangs in Estonia. Evestus still can't fall asleep in silence.' This album as well as the artist is something special and a must-have buy for all harder, but also open-minded Goth-Rock fans.

"This is Dramacore (7/10)"

Evestus is a project that evolved from the Estonian metal band Solwaig in 2003, and following the success of the first two albums "Destiny In Life" (2004) and "Wastelands" (2006), we now have "This Is Dramacore".

With an art style reminiscent of Marilyn Manson's "Hollywood" period, the album is very well presented, as is the official website (see above link) which stays in theme nicely, using the "Dark Carnival" Blueprint nicely to create an anticipation of what is to come.

Describing Evestus' sound concisely is very difficult, as essentially Evestus is a sample heavy blend of alternative electronica with dashes of Industrial, Metal, Hip Hop and even World Music thrown in, but without any one sound seeming to dominate the others.

It is immediately apparent that a lot of thought has gone into this album, with strong themes running throughout with the lyrics, music and artwork all working in conjunction to create something increasingly rare these days.

An album!

Now what I mean by that is of course, that it feels like the album was constructed as a whole as opposed to a bunch of songs cobbled together from unrelated ideas.

The music runs the gamut from Nu-Metal styled Rock pieces, through Industrial Rhythm based noise anthems and sometimes ending up in quirky soundscapes, never seeming to settle long enough for the listener to let their guard down, with samples dropped in at regular intervals to help give the songs an added momentum and texture.

All of this leads to a very busy, convoluted series of songs, that makes for a very intense listening experience, heavy on atmosphere, light on convention.

In terms of the artists that you can see have had an influence, there is without a doubt a Marilyn Manson vibe, with elements of Aphex Twin, Laibach and Front Line Assembly all in there.

If you are looking for something different, Evestus has "Unique" written through it like a stick of Blackpool rock, and has enough ideas and quality to offer up an honestly strong album for general consumption.

"This Is Dramacore [9/10] (Sweden)"

- Twist Magazine

"This Is Dramacore (9/10) (German)"

„So suicide is out of fashion/And Manson lost his fucking balls/Trent has found a happy place now“ - mal ehrlich, wie soll man in so einem Umfeld noch interessanten Industrial-Rock produzieren?

"This Is Dramacore"

Evestus are an unconventional Estonian voice in the industrial scene. a potent mix of live orchestral music discordant vocals, samples and noise that comes together on 2010 release This Is Dramacore to tell tales of ego and pretension through both the voice of frontman Ott Evestus and Bioshock’s Fontaine, who is heavily sampled throughout the album. Harsh snares and kick drum machine loops affront the listener at the same time as a whole string section performs and otherwise soothing arrangement behind Evestus’ lyrics.
Ott Evestus is the singer, sole composer and producer of Evestus’ third album ‘This Is Dramacore’ which marks an instrumental boost for the band with live shows supported by a steady backing band including keys, guitars, drums and 4 cellos. Ott describes the sound of Dramacore as an “absinthe reeking carousel” where aggressive industrial and heavy orchestration meet in a “dynamic theatrical fusion”. The package of This Is Dramacore is just as weighty as its sound and concept with a hefty 28 page booklet featuring art and lyrics with artwork that is both complements and expands on the albums concepts. Aesthetically the package seems similar to In Strict Confidence’s Steampunk influenced album La Parade Monstrueuse but musically the two bands could not be further apart.
On the whole Dramacore paints the picture of the many costs of fame, scene drama and the rock and roll lifestyle. Its unconventional mix of strings, electronic music and metal that at times jars and grates but often works to spectacular effect. Whereas most symphonic metal is accompanied by operatic vocals or death metal wails Evestus’ throaty growlings are neither and best described as more of an offbeat croon.
As well as being richly steeped in its anarchic orchestral sound Evestus’ work is heavily influenced by cinematic RPG gaming with Dramacore rife with samples from Irrational Games underwater art deco epic “Bioshock” and previous album Wastelands inspired by Fallout 2. The sampling is expertly peppered throughout and used to great effect. Without descending into obvious repetitive “goth-foolery”.
In opening track Demons of fame there is a rap like vocal section that I was initially dubious about until I realised; I’ve heard this before to great effect, and some how, I was oblivious to the quality of the performance and how it sat in the song, though upon a second listen it was much better.
Demons Of Fame is about the time honored tradition of selling out your principles and talent to the almighty dollar and is a spooky blend of samples leading to Pitchshifter like bass riffs, all against a backdrop of orchestral strings sums up the Evestus sound in a single track.
The steam engine like pumping of Pikachu Warriors drum loops is made all the more urgent sounding by the keyboard sections. “We are the freaks, we’re here to entertain you” is heard over the horn like tooting of the keyboard evokes a sort of circus like atmosphere, complemented by the dirty and degraded artwork of the This Is Dramacore slipcase package with its twisted clowns and performers.

Conveniently confused continues the twisted circus theme with its swaying and soaring orchestral pretensions.
Sacrifice is gloriously discordant vocally while instrumentally charming and a symbolic moment of strength in an album where people are either confronting drama or their own personal demons.
At times this album has been reminiscent of late Skinny Puppy with a little less in the way of subtlety in their sampling choices. Evestus have made an effective and listenable album which only suffers as it tries so hard to fill a multitude of niches. However, the fact that Evestus have endeavored to produce something fully modern and genuinely experimental and is something that I can truly appreciate and enjoy in Dramacore. - Necromag.co.uk

Bio

EVESTUS is both an electro-industrial rock band from Estonia, and the name of the band's founding member and frontman.

Evestus' often distorted vocals are accompanied by massive bass-lines and broken beats tied together with grinding synths, sizzling guitars and orchestrated backdrops making an electro-industrial rock band that has been noted for it's aggressive and theatrical live performances and unique approach toward songwriting, "bringing to the table a lot of musical variety and a lot of unpredictability" (Cyrus Rhodes, musesmuse.com). Evestus straddles a wide range of genres, "creating music that is as aggressive as it is accessible, full of malevolence as well as melody" (Re:Gen Mag).

MTV Baltics perhaps said it best, describing Evestus' sound as "Symphonic Orchestra scoring a fight between Marilyn Manson and The Prodigy."

Being a professionally trained Jazz drummer, Evestus (full name Ott Evestus) used to play percussions for the Death/Industrial outfit Forgotten Sunrise (Out of Line Music) and first gained attention as the vocalist of Estonian metal group Solwaig for their truly theatrical live shows, but began to compose his solo album in a desire to gain the creative freedom to fully express himself.
His solo debut "Destiny in Life" (2004) landed Evestus a deal with Canada’s D-Trash Records who re-released it to a wider audience. Being a fairly erratic mix of samples and synths, Evestus quickly received more serious looks after releasing "Wastelands" (2006, D-Trash Records), inspired by “Fallout” PC game, the album retains a cult following who refer to it as "post-apocalypse pop music."

In 2008 the solo project Evestus turned into Evestus the band. But as its main producer, singer, songwriter - Ott Evestus remains responsible for the bands direction. Spring 2008 marked the beginning of the Dramatic Era for Evestus - the third album "This is Dramacore" began to take shape and he released two singles and music videos "Sacrifice" and "Enemy" which immediately got a lot of attention and were on heavy rotation on MTV Baltic Top 20 ("Enemy" reaching # 4) and MTV Nordic (Finland, Sweden, etc), both reaching the top 10 of TOP 100 Estonian Music Videos of all time. Same year the band performed at MTV Baltic Birthday Show alongside the world-renown pop star KERLI. (Island Def Jam)

2009 Evestus played at Tallinn Music Week, NOKIA Music Gala and gave lectures about industrial music at the Baltic Film and Media School as part of the "NOKIA Comes with Music" campaign. Rest of the year (over 9 months) was spent mixing the colossal "This is Dramacore" that was self-released in 2010.

2010-2012 Evestus toured Finland and the Baltic countries (including Hard Rock Laager, main stage, on Estonia’s biggest rock festival) with up to a 9-member line-up including 4 cellists from Estonian National Symphonic Orchestra - creating a custom show for each of the venues and Evestus performances have been described as "legendary, not only because of the value of additional musicians, but especially thanks to the dedication and honesty he tackles the stage with just as if it were his last show" (rockmetalbands.com).

Currently a four-piece, the band is hot off their recent release of the "No God" EP (Dec 21, 2012), that also spawned two new music videos - "Sleep Forever" (released Oct 2012) and "Voices" (Nov 2012) have been well received and both reached #1 in TOP7 weekly music video chart in Estonian National TV and "Sleep Forever" was also voted #10 in TOP50 Estonian Music Videos of 2012.
