You cannot go and blame the band named Evil Kangaroo on lack of ambition. This group that has published two unlabeled albums does not hesitate blending different styles of music together. For example on the brand new record Agent Hello in Goodbye’s Sober Day one can taste progressive, tango, rockabilly, funk and disco beat flavors, among others.
- The next aim of Evil Kangaroo is to finish the musical trilogy. It won’t be hard, because new investigations have again been made, tells the agent, John T. Hello.

Next Tuesday Evil Kangaroo will play at Vuoltsu. This gig is part of the Big Boom '08 semifinal, competing bands being Half Apple, Dogsafe and Piecemaker.
- The performance is restricted to 20 minutes. However, I strongly believe that Evil Kangaroo is able to reveal the truth in the given time, Hello stresses.

Hello, being responsible for the band’s visuals believes in the power of Evil Kangaroo’s bigger picture.
- Live experiences with Evil Kangaroo have been praised. The gigs have been admired and thanked greatly.

Mastering a cabaret-like style, Evil Kangaroo offers excitement for every moment. Each day Agent Hello faces enemies that want the hero dead.
- Luckily I have just enough experience not to be harmed by some basic tricks. But the villains are sneaking up on me all the time; I think just last weekend someone tried to poison me.

Evil Kangaroo -yhtyettä ei voi ainakaan syyttää kunnianhimon puutteesta. Kaksi omakustannelevyä julkaissut ryhmä ei epäröi sotkea eri musiikkityylejä toisiinsa. Esimerkiksi tuoreella Agent Hello in Goodbye’s Sober Day –platalla maistuvat mm. proge, tango, rockabilly, funk ja disko.
– Evil Kangaroon seuraava tavoite on saada äänitetrilogia päätökseen. Se ei ole vaikeaa, sillä uusia tutkimuksia on taas tehty, agentti John T. Hello kertoo.

Evil Kangaroo soittaa Vuoltsulla ensi viikon tiistaina. Keikka on osa Big Boom ‘08 -semifinaalia, jossa kisaavat myös Half Apple,
Dogsafe sekä Piecemaker.
– Esiintyminen on rajattu 20 minuuttiin. Uskon kuitenkin vahvasti, että Evil Kangaroo pystyy selvittämään totuuden siinä ajassa, Hello painottaa.

Yhtyeen visuaalisesta puolesta vastaava Hello uskoo Evil Kangaroon kokonaisuuden voimaan.
– Live-kokemuksia Evil Kangaroon seurassa on kehuttu. Keikkoja on ihmetelty ja kiitelty suuresti.

Kabareemaisen tyylin hallitseva Evil Kangaroo tarjoaa joka hetki myös jännitysmomentin. Agentti Hello kohtaa päivittäin vihollisia, jotka tahtovat sankarimme hengiltä.

Evil Kangaroo was interviewed by Radio 957 on Saturday March 14th 2009 in a one hour program. Together with the interview, four Evil Kangaroo songs from the latest Evil Kangaroo album were played: Sir Sweatalot, Escapegoat, Rockabilly the Sid and Tequilized! (la muerte de un pianista). The broadcast was repeated the next day.

Agent Hello in Goodbye's Sober Day

The wildly confusing and madly interesting rock theater managed by Evil Kangaroo is like the lost link between the 1970's fanatically progressive music and fusion noise, over the era of disco and punk that eventually ruined the former, and the most recent serious pop playing. The extremes of the register being a crowing falset and a dominating din of the bass vocals, a framework is laid where one may progress bit by bit towards the core of musical ambition. What comes to genres, the orchestra has oiled itself so successfully with humor and versatility that it becomes unnecessary even to try to get a firm grip. After Zappa-like guitar slinger a harder funk gear might be changed and a nerve tickling and jiggling ska might switch to a theatrical tango and further to an ironically escapist disco beat. Waiting its turn is still the soft and supple pleasure of boogie in the most grooving focal piece of the record, Rockabilly the Sid. The tin can sounds of the retro jazz, the tequila-smelling tejano-ballad and the final bolero complete the overwhelming cabaret. The quick changes in genres are intentionally harsh and unexpected, which however work brilliantly when put into effect with the made-up poker face Evil Kangaroo has adopted.

Hillittömän hämmentävää ja mielipuolisen mielenkiintoista rockteatteria pyörittävä Evil Kangaroo on kuin kadotettu linkki 1970-luvun yltiöprogesta tai fuusioluukutuksesta niiden tuhoksi koituneiden diskoilun ja punkin ylitse uusimpaan vakavaan pop-musisointiin. Kun äänialan ääripäinä on falsettikiekunaa ja hallitsevan muikeaa bassonkumua, voidaan näistä raameista vähitellen edetä kohti musiikillisen kunnianhimon keskustaa. Tyylilajien suhteen yhtye on öljynnyt itsensä niin hyvin huumorilla ja monipuolisuudella, että tukevaa otetta on turha yrittää saada. Zappamaisten kitaratilutusten perään saattaa iskeä raskaampi funkvaihde ja hermoherkullinen ska-hytke vaihtua teatraaliseksi tangoksi sekä edelleen ironisen eskapistiseksi discotahdiksi. Vuoroaan odottavat vielä pehmeän ja vetreän boogien ilot koko kiekon vetävimmän ankkurikappaleen Rockabilly The Sid muodossa. Retrojatsin peltipurkkisoundit, tequilantuoksuinen tejanoballadi ja viimeinen bolero täydentävät huiman kabareen. Tyylien äkkivaihtelut ovat tahalliset rankat ja odottamattomat, mikä kuitenkin toimii erinomaisesti Evil Kangaroon omaksumalla sminkatulla pokerinaamalla toteutettuna.

Taking a glimpse of the record covers I make a conclusion that this might be a horror-psychobilly-orchestra. The grounding black metal with opera vocals during the first minute make me think that I was wrong. The songs make twisted changes of direction and the array of genres thrives to present the western music in whole. The concept is like Mike Patton driven manic, conducting a midsize performance theater.

Moments of happiness can be found all over, but I especially like the Farfisa-speed-blues of Rockabilly the Sid and the Sad Guitar meets Ennio Morricone goes Magyar Posse mood of a song called Tequilized. The band sounds tight and they have skills to fill a tiny village, and there is not much bad to say about the finishing. Mixing sounds balanced and fresh, gladly, although being a bit too flat.

This is the kind of manic blasting a crowd might even forget about drinking and socializing for a while. Luckily there are some piecefull bits, not before the end of the record, but right on time. If only some genuine feelings and variation of mood could be added in this strong set, it would certainly make it to my this year’s favorites. Now everything is pulled through a filter of farce without mercy. Jazz, fusion, rock and tango all sound too much the same.

Levyn kansia vilkaistessa päättelen, että kyseessä saattaa olla horror-psychobilly-orkesteri. Ensimmäisen minuutin black metal –rymistely oopperavokaaleilla saa ajattelemaan, että olin väärässä. Kappaleet vaihtavat suuntaa äkkiväärään ja musiikkilajien tyylikirjo pyrkii esittelemään koko länsimaisen musiikin. Konsepti on kuin maaniseen tilaan ajettu Mike Patton keskisuuren näytelmäteatterin konduktöörinä.

Pieniä ilon hetkiä löytyy joka puolelta, mutta minä pidän erityisesti Rockabilly the Sidin Farfisa-speed-bluesista sekä Tequilized-kappaleen Surujen kitara meets Ennio Morricone goes Magyar Posse –tunnelmasta. Bändi soi tiukasti ja soittotaitoa löytyy pienen kylän verran, eikä viimeistelystäkään löydy juuri pahaa sanottavaa. Miksaus soi ilahduttavan tasapainoisesti ja raikkaasti, vaikka on hieman liian tasapaksu.

On tämä sen verran maanista tykitystä, että voi yleisöllä unohtua juominen sekä muu sosiaalinen kanssakäynti toviksi. Onneksi myös suvantoja tarjoillaan, vasta levyn lopussa, mutta juuri oikealla hetkellä. Jos vielä saisi aitoa tunnelatausta ja tunnelman variaatiota tähän vahvaan kollaasiin, niin menisi heittäen vuoden kärkikastiini. Nyt kaikki on vedetty armotta farssinäytelmäfiltterin läpi. Jazz, fuusio, rock ja tango kuulostavat liian samanlaisilta.

Phew! Working through Evil Kangaroo's theme record Agent Hello in Goodbye's Sober Day is an effort. Not because these fellows couldn’t play. Because they can. Listening to Agent Hello is tiring because it’s tricks for tricks’ sake. If Evil Kangaroo was an actor it would be blamed of heavy over acting.

Agent Hello is a theatrical mess divided in eight acts. As the macabre murder mystery starred by Agent Hello evolves, a couple of dozen genres are run through. Tango Para Una is a tango as the name implies, Rockabilly the Sid surely is a light paced 'billy. Miles Davis Slapped Me goes jazz, and during the journey even the disco atmosphere of Love Boat is visited, not forgetting some real saloon action. One of the rather clear references of this musical jumble is Mr. Bungle, which Evil Kangaroo supposedly tries to ape for some extent. Certainly has Mr. Bungle slipped off road, but in this case trees are falling big time.

Self-purposeful deftness turns out to be detrimental to Evil Kangaroo. Playing works well, but everything feels too emphasized and banal. Sadly, because the band is technically skillful. The contents are like some light 'stuff without a strong idea. The last nail on the coffin is the vocals and especially the lyrics. The over acting mentioned above applies especially for Señor Garganta’s vocals, and the lyrics are one wittier rime after another.

Agent Hello is annoying but also frustrating. There’s potential, as there are skills. Nevertheless, the skills are used unsparingly, by wrong motives. Once Evil Kangaroo leaves singing and unnecessary goofing it sounds good. Unfortunately, only the last act of the record Hold 'em Horses is played without a vocal overkill.

Puuh! Evil Kangaroon teemalevyn Agent Hello in Goodbye's Sober Day läpikahlaaminen käy voimille. Ei sen takia, etteivätkö kaverit osaa soittaa. He nimittäin osaavat. Agent Hellon kuunteleminen rasittaa, koska se on kikkailua kikkailun vuoksi. Jos Evil Kangaroo olisi näyttelijä, sitä syytettäisiin rankasta ylinäyttelemisestä.

Agent Hello on kahdeksaan näytökseen jaettu teatraalinen sekasotku. Agentti Hellon tähdittämän makaaberin murhamysteerin vauhdittamiseksi tarinan edetessä käydään musiikkityylejä läpi pari tusinaa. Tango Para Una on nimensä mukaisesti tango, Rockabilly the Sid toki letkeäpoljentoista 'billyä. Miles Davis Slapped Me jatsailee, ja käydäänpä matkan aikana Lemmenlaivan diskotunnelmissakin unohtamatta kunnon saluunameininkejäkään. Yksi musiikillisen sillisalaatin selkeähkö referenssi on Mr. Bungle, jota Evil Kangaroo kai koittaa jossain määrin apinoida. Kyllä Mr. Bunglekin on metsään ajanut, mutta tässä tapauksessa pusikko rytisee kunnolla.

Itsetarkoituksellinen näppäryys koituu Evil Kangaroon kohtaloksi. Soittopuoli on kyllä kunnossa, mutta kaikki tuntuu turhan alleviivatulta ja lattealta. Harmi, sillä yhtye on teknisesti osaava. Sisältö on kevyttä höttöä vailla jäntevää ideaa. Viimeisin naula arkkuun on laulu ja etenkin sanoitukset. Alussa mainittu ylinäytteleminen koskettaa eritoten Señor Gargantan vokalisointia, ja sanoitukset ovat järjestään toinen toistaan nokkelampia loppusointuja.

Agent Hello on ärsyttävä mutta myös turhauttava. Ainesta on, aivan kuin on taitoakin. Sitä kuitenkin käytetään tuhlailevasti, väärin motiivein. Heti, kun Evil Kangaroo jättää laulamisen ja turhan hötkyilyn, se kuulostaa hyvälle. Valitettavasti ilman överiksi vedettyjä vokaaleja hoidetaan vain levyn viimeinen näytös, melankolisen tunnelmallinen Hold 'em Horses.

Eriskummallisista konserteistaan tunnettu Evil Kangaroo tekee musiikkia ilman genrerajoja. Eri musiikkityylejä yhdistelemällä saadaan aikaan hämmentävä kokonaisuus kaunista ja tunteikasta soulia joka yhtäkkiä muuttuu kirskuvaksi sankariheviksi. Frank Zappaan ja Faith No Moreen verrattu Evil Kangaroo on kaikessa progressiivisuudessa ja teatraalisuudessaan loistava live-esiintyjä.
