"Visions says:"

„ETF spielen ultrahektischen, drängenden Postcore, gegen
den sich At The Drive-In stellenweise wie eine Popband ausnehmen...“ - visions

"Purerock says:"

As A Fuckboy’ geradezu grandios machen. - UNCLESALLY’S

"SLAM says:"

„ETF selbst sollten schon bald als Referenz gelten... Das bisherige Debüt des Jahres!“ - SLAM

"HELLDRIVER says:"

„Debut!

"Warschauer says:"

"ECHOES-ONLINE says:"

„Hamburg rockt nicht mehr, Hamburg brennt." - ECHOES-ONLINE

"POISONFREE says:"

Defying categorisation seems to be one of the main tasks of this German band, and they totally succeed. Presenting a full length that drips new blood from every pore of it’s body,

Their 50 minute debut full length consists of driving, often hectic and eclectic tracks jumping back and forth between genres. While a certain dose of anger and aggression is clearly visible to me throughout the record, it is often laid back and holding back something, with almost clean guitars, tiny, progressive instrumental parts, complex songwriting and here and there some kind of a jam-feeling within some tracks. Still, all songs focus enough to not fall apart, and especially their singer with his nice, very diverse vocals between singing and speaking and shouting, and between punishing and teasing, keeps the balance and focus within the tracks.

Describing their songwriting more indepth is not an easy task. Too many ideas are thrown in, from classic indierock over old school punk to postrock elements, everything is happening. Despite a certain noise-influence, I found this quite homgenic and not too bulky, what noise tends to be. And despite all their arstistic ideas and uncompromising, uncommercial approach, some tracks are remarkably catchy. “narcissus is a fuckboy” starts with a riff that reminds of Billy Talent, but is far away, while the song evolves into an upbeat track, among the prototypes of mixing indie with punk on this record. Other tracks focus on the progressive nature of their songwriting, like “shoegazer”, with the complex drumming and atmospheric guitar-melodies that flirt very nice with the vocals. Speaking about complexity, their musicianship has to be mentioned, as it is not only rocksolid, but shines especially when the music gets upbeat and complex.

Following the introduction to this review, comparism are almost impossible. Think of early DC stuff, think of Fugazi, think of postrock and noise and indie-punk, add At the Drive-In, some emo, meet Modest Mouse, add math and deduct cliché and worn out pathes – and out may come this band with this release. At least a bit, because you would still be far away from the truth.

While originality is nothing they lack of, it may be some accessibility. For sure, and due to the amount of styles and ideas, it takes some time to get into this – maybe too long for some. Which would be sad, as it is worth it.

Btw, their full name is “Exits to Freeways spread like the veins on the back of my hand”. But that name is the only thing horrible about this record. The rest is good enough to let me say: dare it, or dare at least a test run. - POISONFREE.com

###
Nois-o-lution about ETF:

ETF's debut album 'spilling drinks.spelling names' should leave you in rapture, if you are ready to get off the freeway to marvel at landscapes and people. If you're not afraid of turns and stop signs. Well,
indie mainstream is driving straight, 130 mph, three-lane, screaming it's mother's name – no need to worry, there's airbags. But these three gentlemen from northern Germany don't trust nothing, instead, they accelerate and at best scream their beliefs into your face.

EXITS TO FREEWAYS are caught between stools. Because they cherish it all and still question everything. Noise-Rock? Postcore? Punk? Alternative? SST? Anybody still know that? Whatever coordinates you drag out of the box, they're insufficient.
Dodgy, intelligent, sweaty at the same time, dirty, raw, mean and alive above all. This thing smells of trouble. A debut album how it is meant to be: unfinished, challenging, still full of ideas and emotions – but most notably: melodies! Despite increased aggressive potential that has to be contained, it is melodies and songs that seduce
you and stick in your head.

If this world was just, songs like „Narcissus As A Fuckboy“ or „Tourette Red“ would make radio stations glow – IF today was still about music. But is it actually? EXITS TO FREEWAYS do give you their music and nothing else. They refuse. If they talk,
they confuse, give themselves strange pseudonyms or cite John Cage… no hype, no history, no past life. No famous guests-on-record or namable producers, no liaison with another british supermodel.
It's about music!
It's about music!!
