"Exnations ‘Can’t Get Hurt’ with hazy-eyed new manifesto"

Fear is a bone-deep needle, slicing its pressure and grim truth from an unknown space in between our nerves and often zapping us of any real sense of self. It’s alright, though; it can be a cathartic emission which in turn we utilize to carve out our own path, however tortuous it might be along the way. A trio of musicians, singers and songwriters known as Exnations ⎯⎯ Sal Mastrocola (vocals, guitar, synth), Dan Ciarrocchi (guitar) and Taylor Hughes (drums, synth) ⎯⎯ seize their lives back with a sparkling, rock-twisted single called “Can’t Get Hurt.” A numbing exploration of imminent peril, the song bends the emotions like a ray of light bolting through a prism. “Danger seems so crazy right now,” they pound, warping their senses (and ours) in stunning fashion. “Is that all you think about?”

It’s a reckless but careful exhibition of their own journeys and coming together from opposite sides of the country. But in true millennial form, they took to the interwebs to connect their minds and bodies and spirits as cohorts for devious and magnetic schemes. “You can wait for weekends, stay in bed all day / You can blame the seasons, next one’s on its way / You can write one more song,” Mastrocola professes, a ghoulish “Everyone gets scared” haunting just behind him. “Flightless birds can’t get hurt,” he then supposes. “Buried in the sand…”

It’s quite mournful once you sit with it for a few spins. The glisten of electric guitar and ceaseless percussion are enough to knock you off your feet, too. As it climaxes, the alt-pop troupe reengage those feelings of angst and anxiety into long-form solutions, shocking their systems from slumber and looking skyward for their fate written in the stars. “You can wake and get paralyzed, looking at a world you don’t recognize / You breathe in deep, look that bastard in the eye / I ain’t in control, and that’s alright…” Ultimately, it’s shamelessly empowering. The shroud of darkness might take some time to lift, but we’re at least in a much better place than from the start.

"'Can't Get Hurt' Premiere"

PREMIERE: EXNATIONS Release New Single Mar 02, 2018
It is time for another premiere here at Lemonade Magazine! This one comes straight out of Brooklyn, NY from a band called EXNATIONS. Their brand new single “Can’t Get Hurt” is a prelude to their debut EP, Tiny Sound In The Dark, due out later this year. Although the band calls Brooklyn home, the trio, consisting of lead vocalist/guitarist Sal Mastrocola, drummer Taylor Hughes and guitarist Dan Ciarrocchi, is actually spread out across two states (New York and Maryland). Their music is recorded with home equipment and sewn together with file sharing and home production software.

The aforementioned single, “Can’t Get Hurt”, focuses on overcoming personal anxiety. The song is meant to be an anthem ultimately representing the feeling you get when you finally come to terms with it. In the words of lead singer, Sal Mastrocola: “This song is about celebration. A realization that if you can look your anxiety in the eye and be comfortable with it being there – you can live with it. This song is a celebration of the moment that anxiety’s weight is lifted. In that moment, you might as well dance.”

Sure, social media and technology has its downfalls, but stories like this one just go to show you that using it for the creative greater good is one of the things that makes the time we live in pretty damn exciting. So without further adieu, we are very excited to premiere “Can’t Get Hurt” by EXNATIONS. - Lemonade Magazine

Bio

Rarely in the same place at the same time, members Sal Mastrocola (vocals/guitar/synth), Dan Ciarrocchi (guitar), and Taylor Hughes (drums, synth) were not in the same area code, let alone the same room, while recording new music. This 21st century band used 21st century techniques--home recording software, file sharing, and coffee. With Mastrocola recording vocals in his own bedroom in Brooklyn, Ciarrocchi recording guitars with Chris Freeland(Future Islands), and Hughes recording drums with JK Royston from Baltimore, MD.

The band recently released their single ‘Can’t Get Hurt’ as a prelude to their debut EP Tiny Sound in the Dark which is due out spring/summer 2018. Since the single release the group has been featured on Spotify’s Fresh Finds: Six Strings, Alternative Press, Substream Magazine and a handful of east coast college radio stations.
