""...next big thing from Toledo...it's easy to see why everbody seems to love them...""

Read all about it, Toledo’s got a sweet new garage rock band on the scene, and we’re gonna shout it! That, right there, is proof of why I never would have made a good cheerleader. But all joking aside, don’t be surprised if you notice these guys more and more in the newspaper headlines. Extra! Extra! (a.k.a. four dudes from the 419 who answer to Nathan, Brandon, Andy and Drew) is the next big thing from Toledo, and if you don’t believe me, ask one of their many devout fans sporting a bright green t-shirt from the band’s merch table.

I first heard about Extra! Extra! when they opened for the Hard Lessons last month at Mickey Finn’s. I immediately noticed their fans dressed in the aforementioned green Ts, ranging in age from 12 to 40. The music started playing, the fans started dancing and I got a taste of their soon-to-be-released album.

“The Smoking Gun LP” by Extra! Extra! is 11 gritty little ditties, worthy of the rock ‘n’ roll title they’ve desperately been seeking, though there is a strong punk and emo influence there as well. After giving the CD a couple rotations on the boombox, it’s safe to say they know how to sing, scream and influence the listener to throw a party. Overall, “The Smoking Gun” is a solid effort, and while not every track is memorable, it’s easy to see why everybody seems to love them. The album starts off strong with the catchy and sing-alongable “In The Key of Excess,” but my two favorite songs show up later as tracks 8 & 11, titled, “Smile Brightly Sunshine Girl” and “Lose the Zero, Get With a Hero,” respectively. But don’t just take my advice, be one of the first to own the new album at the Extra! Extra’s! CD Release Party on Saturday. We Are the Fury, Man Down and The Dashburns also play. Frankie’s Inner City, 308 Main St. 9 p.m. $5 advance, $8 at the door. For info, 419-693-5300/www.frankiesinnercity.com.

Bio

Hailing from Toledo, OH, Extra! Extra! have taken their mid western, rust belt upbringing and put it to good use. You can hear the mid american, rock n roll roots in every riff, snarl and beat they lay down. Having first taken the stage in June of '08 the boys quickly established themselves as the premier rock act in the region and secured opening spots for bands such as The Pink Spiders, The Hard Lessons, Star Fucking Hipsters (ex leftover crack) We Are the Fury, Rediscover, and more. Winning their fans over with a raucous, over the top live show, feel good tunes, and an insatiable appetite for debauchery, they have built a large, fiercly loyal, following that grows every time they take the stage. With January of '09 bringing in the release of their debut album "The Smoking Gun LP" and a summer tour in the works, Extra! Extra! is a band you will be hearing more and more of.
