Born 1975 in the small town of Jijiga, Eyob Mekonnen is among the most popular reggae artists in Ethiopia today. With his 5-man band Zion Band, Eyob offers a reggae beat with a distinctive Ethiopian cast.
Eyob Mekonenns music is soulful reggae and traditional Ethiopian folk sound accompanied with deep lyrics and strong messages, sung mainly in his native tongue Amharic mixed with Oromifa, Somali and English. With a range that moves from roots reggae to Ethiopop, Eyob’s anthems promotes morality, love, peace and social consciousness.
It has been three years since Eyob released his hit debut album Kal, and he has been receiving wide acclaim ever since. The artist has made a reggae album that has distinguished him from other Ethiopian musicians and his music has started to get large acclaim and the songs are getting more and more popular.
