"Scene and Heard Vol 61"

Alternative pop-rock band Fade Chromatic have a new music video that you should check out. Capable of Love is the lead single from from the band’s upcoming sophomore release, CARELESS//MADNESS (out Dec 14, 2013). Directed by Nicholas John and filmed by John Ker (The Box Tiger, Elos Arma), the music video follows the story of two young people who face an unknown human threat in a remote rural setting. Inspired by the movie Children Of Men, the video matches the song’s lyrical ideas of loss, but with a note of hope. Make sure to watch Fade Chromatic live at their album release show Dec. 14th at the Handlebar. - Toronto Is Awesome

"Interview/Podcast with Fade Chromatic (TheShowTO)"

The boys from Fade Chromatic dropped by the studio on one of the best days in recent history for the city of Toronto. Not only was the city fresh of the heels of a Grey Cup victory, but also ridded itself of a "pig on the loose". It was great to have the oppurtunity to talk to these passionate and rather humble guys. While Boz and I were expecting 4 guys to drop by, we only got 3 and it didn't take long for the boys to explain why. Fade Chromatic can be compared to Destiny's Child in many ways..yes, that Destiny's Child, as they had also encountered a time where there was a revolving door of members. Beyonce even took it upon herself to write a song about the experience of losing members...

Fortunately, the boys in Fade Chromatic don't seem to be fazed by the loss of another member as they seem to be loving life as a 3 piece. The remaining members of the band explain why life as a 3 piece has it's perks and talk about the adjustment period as a result. Fade Chromatic seemed to miss the memo that members of rock bands are supposed to be obnoxious and cocky but the nice guy act wears well on them. They even showed some love to other hard working local bands that we've also had on TheShowTO including the likes of The Box Tiger and SOPE.

Check out Fade Chromatic this Saturday (December 1) at Cherry Cola's...Listen to the interview to find out why!

"Scene & Heard Vol. #19: Fade Chromatic Is Waiting For The Edge (Toronto Is Awesome)"

10 months in the making, Toronto-based pop-rock outfit Fade Chromatic has finally released their debut music video for the frenetic, delay-drenched single, “Waiting For The Edge“. Shot by Spectrum Pictures over 3 days in Scarborough and downtown Toronto, the video is a dark take on the lyrical content in the band’s otherwise upbeat and catchy music. The song is the first official single release from the band’s debut self-titled EP, produced by Damon de Szegheo (Bruce Cockburn, Ruby Coast) and Justin Helle. The album was released in July 2012.

The band is heading back into the studio for the month of November to record their next effort, and putting together touring plans for early 2013. You can catch them next at Rancho Relaxo on October 31 for a special Halloween-themed show presented by Two Way Monologues. - Toronto Is Awesome

"Video: FADE CHROMATIC – Waiting For The Edge (The Indie Machine)"

It’s been a while since we last caught up with our July 2012 Featured Artist FADE CHROMATIC, and in that time it seems they’ve toiled away at completing their debut music video for Waiting For The Edge – the lead single off their Damon de Szegheo (BRUCE COCKBURN, RUBY COAST) and Justin Helle-produced self-titled debut EP.

Shot/Directed/Edited by Pras Lingam at Spectrum Pictures, the band spent three days shooting in Scarborough and downtown Toronto to showcase a darker take on the much more upbeat tune – you can check it out below.

FADE CHROMATIC are headed back into the studio in November to begin recording their next release and plans are already circulating for an early-2013 tour. See them live next on Oct. 31st at Rancho Relaxo for a Two Way Monologues Halloween Bash - The iNDiE MACHiNE

"Familia l Fade Chromatic (The Harlton Empire)"

EMPIRE LOVE: We first came across Fade Chromatic in late 2010 when they were featured on a charity compilation for Scribble Me Silly by our friends at DARC Productions. A couple years later they showed up on our radar again when they played a show in Waterloo with our guys in Elos Arma. Their drummer Shawn Burgess has become a good pal of ours and was our first ever ‘Artist Vestitus’. In July they released their debut self-titled 5-track album and have just released their first music video ” Waiting For The Edge “. They make great music, are great guys and are great supporters of the Toronto music scene. We think they rule, which is why they are Harlton Empire Familia. - The Harlton Empire

"Fade Chromatic featured on debut episode of One Way Monologue Podcast (Two Way Monologues)"

Lead single "Waiting For The Edge" featured on the first episode of One Way Monologue podcast, the new podcast from Dan Wolovick, founder of prominent Toronto music website/blog and booking company, Two Way Monologues.

"Waiting For The Edge [is]...a really lively kickass indie rock song..." -Dan Wolovick, Two Way Monologues

"Artist Vestitus l Shawn Burgess - Fade Chromatic (The Harlton Empire)"

Artist Vestitus is a new series from The Harlton Empire where some of Toronto's most artistic people tell a story about one of their favourite and/or meaningful pieces of clothing. This first edition is by Shawn Burgess of the band Fade Chromatic:

Back when Fade Chromatic first came together in the summer of 2010, we recorded a track called Lois Lame at DARC Studios for a charity compilation album they were putting out for the children’s charity Scribble Me Silly. It was our first time in the studio, so we were quite excited. At the same time, I was for some reason going through an obsession with buying hats from Value Village. I had found one really nice Volcom hat there for $5, so I was convinced that I should buy every cheap ridiculous hat that they had. As a result, I acquired several borderline-unwearable hats, including the lovely “beaver” hat pictured above.

The rest of the band specifically hated that hat, so naturally I made a point to wear it throughout the entirety of the recording at DARC. I designated it as my “recording hat”, and also put it on at our first show just for when we played Lois Lame. To further piss off the guys, I even wore it in a number of pictures from our first photoshoot, to many complaints. I think I even wore it when tracking drums for our next recording, a little 4-song demo, but since then I somehow came to my senses and now the hat holds a place of honour at the top of my closet at home. I still bust it out every now and then…

For me, it’s a nice tie-in, because that first recording/show/photoshoot was with our original five-piece line-up – two of whom have moved on and been replaced by one newer member. We’ve come a long way since then as musicians and our sound has evolved a fair bit (Lois Lame itself hasn’t been played for almost 2 years now), but it gives me fond memories of our earliest phase every time I see it.

As a fun note, that album is still up for free download, you can check out that remnant from our past here: http://darcproductions.bandcamp.com/album/a-benefit-for-scribble-me-silly“

"Indie Seen (ECHO Weekly)"

FADE CHROMATIC
First time gigs at the Boathouse are unlike any other. As an indie mecca for musicians and music fans, the Boathouse provides a stage for every talented individual seeking their 15 minutes in front of a real participating audience. Geared up to open for Stone Set on Friday July 9, Fade Chromatic is the Waterloo–based remnants of Circadian Rhythm, revamped and revived with an onslaught of fantastic original music. Eclectically influenced by artists ranging from Jason Mraz to Dream Theatre and Opeth, the band “dove headfirst into playing gigs and recording.” Their goal is to drop an EP to listening ears over the next several months. In the meantime, their original work is up on Myspace as the band continues to add to their catalog of fresh rock meets pop punk. “Kitchener–Waterloo has a great assortment of local talent,” the band writes in an email interview. “The universities provide a great stage for young musicians to come together and create interesting musical partnerships. The venues in the area also seem to provide a bit more of a cohesive and fostering atmosphere than a larger city such as Toronto. That’s exactly how Fade Chromatic got started, after meeting at UW and cutting their teeth in local venues.” Evoking a full–on dance party, Fade Chromatic entices their audiences show over by offering a high energy live show. “(We love to) get people moving,” they say. “The focus on musicianship is perhaps slightly higher than most bands, but never at the expense of having fun. We try to not take ourselves too seriously.” So what have you got to lose? Boathouse. Rock Bands. Dance Party. Sounds like something you should be marking on your calendar. Catch Stone Set, Fade Chromatic and Fans of Crime at the Boathouse, Friday July 9. “Realize how valuable your fans are,” advises the band. “They can do a lot for you, and consistently bringing fans out makes you a hotter commodity for promoters. Also, a large part of being successful is who you know, so make sure you always have some business cards on you; you never know who you will run into!” myspace.com/fadechromatic - Echo Weekly

Recorded at Oak Recording Studio last fall by Producer / Engineer Justin Helle and mixed and mastered by Damon de Szegheo - Fade Chromatic mix the guitar sensibilities of U2 / Coldplay, the drums of Blink 182 and the vocals of LA pop to make a collection of tracks that are fun, emotive, and great for summer drives. "7-Day Mixtape: Vol. 57 – FADE CHROMATIC (The Indie Machine)"

With the start of July 2012 we shift gears with our June Featured Artist FADE CHROMATIC as the pop-rock quartet get set to debut their self-titled EP on the masses this Friday at The Annex Live.

We caught up with Jordan Abrams, Shawn Burgess, Sean Messenger, and Alex Draper-Millan ahead of the show to find out some of their favourite song picks – check out the mix in the player and read through their thoughts below.

1. MUSE – New Born
Burgess, Messenger, Abrams: MUSE is by far the one act we can all unanimously say we are huge fans of. One of our first real group experiences was trekking down to Detroit to catch them live; to date it is still the best show we have ever seen. Forget their new crap, New Born is one of the best songs on their best album, and a total no-brainer.

2. BLOC PARTY – Like Eating Glass
Burgess, Messenger, Abrams: BLOC PARTY is just an all-round awesome band, and Like Eating Glass was one of the very first songs we played when we initially came together and were discovering our sound through playing covers that we liked. Even today, the drumbeat in this song had an influence on the drums for our single, Waiting For The Edge.

3. BLINK-182 – First Date
FC + Nehemiah Lim (In Spirit): This song is an homage to our old bassist, Neo, who was a massive part of shaping and forming our upcoming EP. He is a huge pop-punker, and a big BLINK-182 fan. He almost died when we all went to one of their shows and he couldn’t make it due to work. Our newer material is starting to stray away from this genre, but it was still a huge part of our formative process.

4. WINTERSLEEP – Miasmal Smoke & The Yellow Bellied Freaks
Burgess: I first discovered WINTERSLEEP, and specifically the excellent Welcome To The Night Sky album through a girl I used to date (she also turned me onto longboarding), and it is still one of my all-time favorites. This song is the perfect closer to that melancholy album, and I still love to turn all the lights off, close my eyes, and blast it.

5. THE SHINS – Pink Bullets
Messenger: I first discovered THE SHINS in the summer of ’07 while slaving away on the night shift at a manufacturing plant. I got through my shift four minutes at a time, singing Pink Bullets in my head repeatedly… and I still love it.

6. JASON MRAZ – Please Don’t Tell Her (Live)
Abrams: JASON MRAZ is the reason I started to take singing seriously – he made me realize it was possible to sound even better live than on a recording, and that is something I carry with me to this day. His vocal abilities give me something to aspire towards, and this song is a perfect example of the passion and control in his voice.

7. RON SEXSMITH – Secret Heart
Draper-Millan: I guess it’s not a song that influenced me as a bassist in any way, but RON SEXSMITH has had a huge impact on me as a musician. To me, Secret Heart is songwriting ground zero. It was one of the first songs that I could listen to over and over again and I still can/do to this day. I was fortunate enough to see him perform live and the way he filled the room with just his voice and a guitar still amazes me. - THE iNDiE MACHiNE

"iM Premiere: FADE CHROMATIC – S/T EP (The Indie Machine)"

Just in time for their official iM-promoted album release show tomorrow night at The Annex Live, The Indie Machine is pleased to present the full-stream premiere of FADE CHROMATIC’s debut self-titled EP.

Produced by Damon De Szegheo (BRUCE COCKBURN, THE RUBY COAST) and Justin Helle at Oak Recording Studios, the five tracks that follow in the embed below are plenty of pop-rock and punk-inspired fun to help you get your groove on.

And hey! Once you’re done listening to this, why not hit up the rockin’ mixtape that the Toronto four-some curated earlier this week… or, you know… just stream this on loop until you come out and party with us tomorrow night… - The iNDiE MACHiNE

"The Indie Machine Featured Artist Of The Month - FADE CHROMATIC (The Indie Machine)"

Toronto pop-rock quartet FADE CHROMATIC hit the scene in early 2011 and haven’t really shown any signs of slowing down; with a certain panache for writing pop hooks, a much-praised energetic live show, and now the upcoming July 6th release of their debut self-titled EP.

In mid/late-summer 2011 the band sought out producer Damon De Szegheo (Bruce Cockburn, The Ruby Coast) and Justin Helle at Oak Recording Studios to help craft the sound on their debut, and the final polish definitely shows.

Between the multi-part vocal harmonies and the band’s four-to-the-floor pop-rock sensibility, ultimately FADE CHROMATIC are really just a lot of fun.

In case you still need convincing, check out Waiting For The Edge: the lead single off their impending debut in the embed below. The official release show goes down July 6th at The Annex Live with iM – more details to come soon! - THE iNDiE MACHiNE

"Album Review: Fade Chromatic - Self Titled (The Take Media)"

Pop-rock licks and catchy rhythms are the makings for a solid foundation of Fade Chromatic’s 5-track Self-Titled album. Something needs to be said about a band that is admittedly of a pop-rock genre in a city that’s dominated (or in some cases, infested with) indie/hipster rockers.

The album starts strong with the single, “Wind Up Dead”. A track made up of melodic vocals punctuated nicely with an addictive lead guitar riff, and punchy drum fills at the start of the second verse. This sets listeners up for a steady stream of head bobbing and memorable tunes.

To be technical for a moment, the tracks themselves are crisp and mixed seamlessly. The only thing I found a tad jarring was the filtering used for vocals – occasionally there is a slight detachment in sound, particularly with the layered harmonies: with the exception of the verses on “Waiting For The Edge”.
“Another Sunrise” is an interesting tune; the shift in its ending from upbeat pop declaration to gentle ballad in its last minute and 10 seconds is a great way to end the 5 track EP.

To celebrate the release of this album, Fade Chromatic will be playing a show today at The Annex Live with Future History, The Cautioneers and Air Marshal Landing. The event is hosted by The Indie Machine and attendees have the opportunity to win a pretty rad looking Uke. More details for the event can be found here.

"Show Review: FADE CHROMATIC W/ THE CAUTIONEERS @ ANNEX LIVE 07/06/2012 (Ride The Tempo)"

Last Friday I attended Fade Chromatic’s CD release. I didn’t catch most of the opening bands because I was at a birthday party earlier in the night.

I did however see the Cautioneers. I think it may have been the poor vocal mix at the Annex Live but I wasn’t totally feeling them. They were only ok.

I realize I haven’t really talked about Fade Chromatic here before. Simply put they’re a pop-rock band from Toronto. They’re performance on Friday embodied everything it was to be a pop-rock band. Colourful lighting, confetti, beach balls, smoke machines. A lot of razzle dazzle. - Ride The Tempo

"Fade Chromatic’s EP Release Party at The Annex Live (Buying Shots For Bands)"

We headed out to The Annex Live for Fade Chromatic’s self-titled EP release party put on by The Indie Machine. If you are unfamiliar with the Toronto pop-rock four-piece, Fade Chromatic is comprised of Jordan Abrams (vocals), Sean Messenger (guitar), Alex Draper-Millan (bass) and Shawn Burgess (drums).

While there was an extensive wait between sets to get the stage and sound ready, their friends were luckily willing to wait. The band finally walked onto the stage shortly after midnight. Bathed in green and red lights, the party began. Full of surprises, the band threw out multiple beach balls for the crowd to bat around; they also cranked up a smoke machine, shot off confetti guns, and invited as many people as could possibly fit up onto the stage to sing along. Their performance is pretty fun on its own and doesn’t necessarily require all these bells and whistles, but this being their EP release party and all, it definitely added to the exciting atmosphere.

They might not be the most experienced band yet, but Abrams is a pretty great frontman, obviously feeding off the crowd’s energy and singing directly to them – often crouching down and touching their hands. It works pretty well as he likely knows everyone in the crowd up front. The real show-stopper of the band though is Burgess on drums. Not only is he a great drummer, he’s just so into it – his hair flails about just as much as his arms!

As for the music, their set showcased their debut EP, including “Wind Up Dead” and the super catchy single “Waiting For The Edge.” To the crowd’s delight, the band came back out for an encore, bringing up their former bassist (who actually recorded the EP with them and met his replacement in Draper-Millan for the first time) to help sing on their cover of The Killers’ “All These Things That I’ve Done.” If there’s one thing for sure, Fade Chromatic know how to have a good time on stage!

You can listen to their EP over on Soundcloud and download their single “Waiting for the Edge” for free. Next up, they have a 3-night stint on the PC Stage at the TNT Waterfront Nightmarket Festival in Toronto July 20-22. - Buying Shots For Bands

"Waterfront Night Market brings balls to the Port Lands (blogTO)"

Despite the proximity to Ashbridge's Bay, the only stinky thing at the 3rd annual T&T Waterfront Night Market was the tofu — heightened, no doubt, by the glut of stalls grilling all sorts of delicious treats.

One thing of special note this year is the Takoyaki or octopus balls; these tender little mouthfuls seem to have really caught on — at least during my visit. Yum! On the beverage, side there seems to be a strange love for the pineapple that's got the vendors in a frenzy. When did that happen?

The crowds were pretty intense on Friday night, but the lineups moved quickly enough and after the peak between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. you could generally get your food within 15 minutes from any given booth.

There was a small area with some amusement park attractions (giant slide, water gun race) but very few people bothered with this. Most people enjoyed headliners Fade Chromatic, who did their best to compete with the food — the hands down main attraction.

Bio

Fade Chromatic wants to move you. Whether it's your head, your heart or your hips, that emotion is at the heart of the band's philosophy. Their layered guitar sound and melodic vocals fluctuate between smooth and turbulent, providing alternate moments of relief and tension for the audience.

CARELESS//MADNESS,  Fade Chromatic's second EP (released Dec 14, 2013), sees the band moving in a more mature direction, bringing a level of atmosphere and deliberate tonality not seen on their previous self-titled release from 2012. Thematically inspired by a piece of artwork commissioned by the band that eventually became the album cover, and informed by the band's recent reconfiguration as a three-piece, CARELESS//MADNESS is focused on being a pop record with less obvious source material. The band prides itself on its focused sound, mixing soaring pop vocals with introspectively powerful delay-based guitar riffs and in-your-face drums.

Spawned in the clubs of Toronto in 2011, Fade Chromatic have won over audiences at numerous high-profile events and festivals (T&T Waterfront Nightmarket 2011/2012/2013, Canadian Music Week 2012/2013), and they only continue to grow. If you haven't heard them before, you soon will - their debut album cracked the Top 20 charts on 92.5 FM CFBX, and CARELESS//MADNESS is already receiving airplay on college radio. Also under their belt are well-received music videos for singles "Capable Of Love" and "Waiting For The Edge". With a strong base in their hometown of Toronto, Fade Chromatic continues to expand their borders and is currently touring CARELESS//MADNESS throughout Southern Ontario and beyond.

Matching head-turning music with a live show drenched in energy that meets a continually growing crowd, it's no wonder they've already received significant recognition in online, print and broadcast media. But this is only the beginning - Fade Chromatic is just getting started.
