"Review: Fairview 'The Video Game Song'"

Fairview

Chicago-based Pop/Rock quartet Fairview bring their unique blend of musicality and Pop sensibility to their latest track ‘The Video Game Song.’ Now, before ideas of Super Mario themes and Dragonforce-esque arpeggios flood your pool of thought and begin swimming laps like Michael Phelps en route to another gold – despite what the title may indicate – ‘The Video Game Song’ has a lot more to offer than simply to serve as background music as you progress to the next boss fight.

The track starts off with an almost “old-time” feel – between the rhythm guitar and accompanying drums – grabbing the listeners attention right out of the gate. This rhythm section is joined by atmospheric synth, lending to the overall ambiance and adding another layer to the experience.

Vocalist Lizzy soon enters the fray, adding her warm tonality into the mix. Her vocals are very reminiscent of Lady Antebellum’s Hillary Scott. Guitarist/Vocalist Matt quickly follows suit, the dual vocal adding a solid dynamic and diversity to the work. Fairview is akin to a Lady Antebellum without the Country twang, encompassing more the Pop end of that spectrum while still remaining in the same vein. That said, while they have some similarities between them, Fairview is certainly no carbon copy. There is enough subtle intricacy and nuance within the framework of ‘The Video Game Song’ to set the band apart from it’s contemporaries. Whether you’re leveling up or simply kicking back, ‘The Video Game Song’ is well suited for any listening experience you may encounter, in both the console world and beyond.

1. Who’s Fairview?

Lizzy: Lead Singer
Becca: Violinist
Cesar: Lead Guitar
Jeff: Drums
Sara: Bass
We are a group of best friends who just love to hang out and create music together. Fairview is a group of friends, some old, some new, that came together with one common interest- making music that can make a difference. Fairview is a group that wants to be remembered. Fairview is a name that wants to get everybody talking.

2. How did you guys get came together and created this band? What’s the story behind the band’s name?

The band started when two friends (Matt and Sara) were just hanging out having a jam session. Eventually they got the idea to turn their nights of goofing off into something more that they could actually benefit from. With all their amazing talent, it wasn’t hard to start their very own two-man band. Then along came Cesar who knew both of them. He joined the band as the guitarist.

Eventually a friend of theirs, Lizzy, who grew up with them in grade school, wowed her way into the band with her angelic voice. By now they had a job at Potbelly’s performing every Saturday.

Playing small shows went on for about a year until 2011 when Becca met everyone. Over the summer, The Guardians had decided to record their first EP in downtown Chicago. So Becca tagged along just for the fun of it. Until on the second day of recording, an idea popped in their heads to include Becca in the band. Since The Guardians were in need of a violinist, Becca was a perfect fit. But they needed a new name. The group of friends spent days around the kitchen table trying to think of good names for their band. At one point they even resorted to looking up random words in books. But that wasn’t working.

Soon enough, they came up with the name Fairview. But it’s not just a name. There is a meaning that played into the choosing of the band name. Forever, the band members have been in love with the music of the Plain White T’s and they always wanted to meet the members of the band. Well, it just so happens that the Plain White T’s live in the same area that the members of Fairview are from. So one day, the five friends thought it would be awesome if they showed up at the lead singer’s house to meet him. They figured out that he lived on the street Fairview Ave. Everyone was so hyped up with excitement that they were so afraid to go and knock on his door. eventually they got the courage and Matt rang the bell. But no one came. So the band walked away with sad looks on their faces.

It wasn’t until later that Matt and Cesar actually met the lead singer Tom. Matt was on his break at work when Cesar called him telling him that the lights were on in Tom’s house. So they raced over, and who should answer the door? Tom. It wasn’t until a few days later that the rest of the band was able to meet him, but going back and forth to Fairview Ave. seemed to have left an impression. So from then on, the band was called Fairview.

By the end of 2011, Jeff came into the picture. Fairview was in desperate need of a drummer but they couldn’t find anyone. They waited for a while until one day Sara was going about her normal day of high school, when Jeff needed to borrow some headphones to complete his month late assignment. She agreed to lend them to him only if she could hear him play drums. Genius! After hearing him, Sara knew their search was over. Their band already full of talent, gained a new member, Jeff who was the icing on the cake.

Now, Fairview thrives as an up and coming pop/rock band playing shows and practicing whenever possible. Each member is constantly thinking about the band and how they can improve as a whole, while still maintaining their everyday lives. “Even if you become a rock star, you still have to keep up good grades and stay in school” said Becca’s mom. And all the members hold true to their school studies along with family commitments. However, Fairview wishes to someday make their band something that they can work at every day rather than once a week so that they can be the best that they can possibly be.

3. What are your music influences?
The Plain White T’s, All Time Low, Taylor Swift, Blink 182.
Also our families encourage us a ton to always be our best and shoot for our dreams to come true.

4. What’s your method at the time of writing a song?

We tend to take personal experiences, good and bad, and turn them into music. We have a wide variety of issues that we all encounter at any given moment of our lives; love, loss, happiness, and hopefulness. We write on our own, in pairs, or all together so we all have an opportunity to inject a little bit of each of ourselves into each of our songs. It’s little things that get pcked up over time. Either a melody or a lyric, then when we sit down and focus on making a song out of it, we look to past or present emotions or experiences.

Bio

Fairview: soon to be legends, idols and icons. This band of teenagers grew up as best friends that hope to someday revolutionize the meaning of music.

This group of best friends started making music together during high school. Although they all attended different schools, they still found time to hang out and practice.

Members Matt (lead vocals and rhythm guitar), Lizzy (Lead vocals) and Cesar (Lead guitar) all met at a Catholic elementary school called St. Josephs; thus creating their everlasting friendship. It wasnt until high school that they met Becca (violinist), who completed their four member band. But they needed a name!

The four friends would sit around the kitchen table with random books opening to random pages to find words to make up a name. Some of the things that came out of that experience were definitely memorable, but not band-name worthy.

Soon enough, they came up with the name Fairview. But its not just a name. There is a meaning that played into the choosing of the band name. Forever, the band members have been in love with the music of the Plain White Ts and they always wanted to meet the members of the band. Well, it just so happens that the Plain White Ts live in the same area that the members of Fairview are from. So one day, the four friends thought it would be awesome if they showed up at the lead singers house to meet him. They figured out that he lived on the street Fairview Ave. Everyone was so hyped up with excitement that they were so afraid to go and knock on his door. eventually they got the courage and Matt rang the bell. But no one came. So the band walked back to the car which was parked down the street (Fairview).

It wasnt until later that Matt and Cesar actually met the lead singer Tom. Matt was on his break at work when Cesar called him telling him that the lights were on in Toms house. So they raced over, and who should answer the door? Tom. It wasnt until a few days later that the rest of the band was able to meet him, but going back and forth to Fairview Ave. seemed to have left an impression. So from then on, the band was called Fairview.

Each member is constantly thinking about the band and how they can improve as a whole, while still maintaining their everyday lives. Even if you become a rock star, you still have to keep up good grades and stay in school said Beccas mom. And all the members hold true to their school studies along with family commitments.
