Bio

Somewhere at the rarely-traveled intersection of Billie Holiday and Tracy Chapman you will find vocalist Faith Carmichael. The singer, song-writer, storyteller and her five piece band – known simply as “Faith” -- have crafted a lush, unique sound that defies genre categorization while simultaneously hinting at the familiar. They call it souljazzfolk -- an eclectic blend that highlights Carmichael's powerful, aching vocals alongside arguably the best rhythm section in all of Atlanta, if not the Southeast.

The daughter of an opera singer mother and a father who once sang back-up for Harry Belafonte, Carmichael grew up in the world of music and music theater. She would later go on to study vocal music at the University of Maryland before making her way to Atlanta to front the 10-piece Funk/Jazz band Sirius B. -- part of the Groovement family that included artists like then-unknowns Donnie and India.Arie.

She would eventually branch out on her own performing her unique blend of genre-blending music throughout the Southeast. Highlights included performances at the 1996 Olympic Games, the International Music Festival, Centennial Park's Wednesday Wind Down and a year-long stint as the house vocalist for one of the city's premier jazz venues -- the Jazz Loft.

In early 2008, after a single weekend of strange, synchronistic meetings, Carmichael connected with the five gentlemen who would form the group Faith. Stars in their own right, the group boasts Georgia State music instructor and local jazz icon Craig Shaw on upright bass, renowned jazz pianist Louis Heriveux, respected band-leader Chris Afful on saxophone, one of Atlanta's premier jazz drummers Erik Page and rocker, soul guitarist Scott Clayton.

Together, they have fashioned a beautiful, inimitable sound that has the ability to get you on your feet, drop you to your knees and keep you remembering that not-so-familiar, familiar song, long after the last note is played. Check it out for yourself: www.faithcarmichael.com
