“The uplifting indie folk of Familiar Creatures gets us under way, you can really hear the Irish accent of lead singer Brian Kelly coming to the fore, which I love”

"Fresh on the net"

I picked this in my own Top 5. Cracking skit this (yes that was “skit” mother, go back to sleep). A London-based band with a singer who sounds more Irish than your cockney – and all the better for it in my opinion. A jumping groove that veers from Paul Simon (One Trick Pony era) to a sort of Mariachi Funk Reggae Groove Thing. On paper it probably shouldn’t work – but hey, who uses paper these days? Just jump, bop and headnod repeatedly to this warm grower. - BBC 6

Bio

2013 will be a break out year for London based band Familiar Creatures. Their music is up-tempo and filled with the magical trumpet lines of one-girl brass section Jessie Barnard. The vocals, sung by Irish front man, Brian Kelly, are a powerful and refreshing tonic to the overcooked sounds of the indie folk/rock scene. Jay Ramsurrun (Lead Guitar) delivers classy riffs, while the rhythm section of Muiris O Donnchu (Keys), Arwyn Davies (Bass) and
Dan Jenkinson (Drums) dish out solid, eclectic, grooves.

Despite their recent beginnings, the Creatures' curious, danceable sound has already landed them on the playlists of BBC 6 and BBC London. As well as playing regularly across London the band also featured at last year’s Hard Working Class Heroes festival in Dublin, celebrating the best in new Irish music. The band are also confirmed for this years Vantastival and other European dates.

Random band facts: Familiar Creatures are tri-lingual (English, Welsh and Irish). Their favourite chord is C sharp minor 7th and their drummer has a very real and extremely justified fear of crows.

The Creatures’ goal is to attract management and booking agency interest, with a view to lining up a full gig and festival schedule for the 2013.
