Fast Moving Mountains Interview
When a band decides to keep a bottle of champagne in their house, never to open it until they have lived their dreams of making it big, you know they are committed. When a band decides to buy a van and head to Toronto to compete with the 42 thousand bands there, you know they are serious.
We sat down with Fast Moving Mountains, a Calgary band that plays a nice blend of acoustic pop, indie rock, and alternative, last week and were very impressed. Joshua Hughes, vocals and guitar, told us the epic history of FFM. Starting out in the 10th grade, Josh met Corey James because of his long hair, and that was the start of many musical projects that eventually lead to “Silence in Noise”, “Ruin Head”, (our favourite, their ongoing rap project), “The Spit” and finally Fast Moving Mountains. Drummer Thomas Brinkhurst eventually joined the band thanks to his persuasive cousin who told Josh and Corey to “call my cousin Tom”. You can’t say no to a random request like that.
Though influenced by artists as diverse as Korn, to Rob Roy, to Thom Yorke (i.e the Messiah), Powerman 5000, Bob Marley, and K-os, FFM don’t let their influences direct their style. “Back to You” has an upbeat alternative rock sound, and is apparently a hit with the moms out there according to guitarist Corey James, while songs like “One sided phone conversation” gives off a low-key feel-good atmosphere. Think Jack Johnson if he actually changed his voice.?When asked what the inspiration for their lyrics was, Josh answered us with “Girls”. While not the most original topic for lyrics these days, it is one of, if not the most personal lyrical subject for any artist to use, and it shows in FFM’s music.??The thing I liked most about Josh, Corey, and Tom wasn’t just their music, but their personalities. It is very refreshing to see a band so committed and focused, but also so chilled and easy to hang out with at the same time.  ??Check out Fast Moving Mountains on March 28th at the Evergreen Theatre Blue Room. The show will be streamed live, so make it out there and you could become famous online for a brief period of time!

Bio

Joshua Hughes - Singer/songwriter for Fast Moving Mountains has been creating catchy electro-acoustic rock songs since 2005, when he debuted two songs and performed on the CBC TV Series "HEARTLAND". The next move for Joshua was to take the songs to a band and then on the road. The band Fast Moving Mountains was formed and quickly played to a sold out venue in Calgary before embarking on a cross Canada tour. In a recent interview CMB: The Calgary Music Scene was quoted saying, "I more or less fell in love with FMM as soon as I heard their songs. It reminds me of the endless possibilities I slip past everyday and wish I could have grabbed a hold of." After returning to Calgary FMM has seen dozens of venues and will be featured on the 2010 Outhouse Recordings Compilation to be distributed around Calgary and performs regularly in the local music scene.
