What sound embraces you when I mention ’50s and ’60s groundbreaking jazz, the music that blew away folks like Hendrix, The Beatles, the Grateful Dead, and generations that followed? Serving up an energetic, wide ranging show with courses featuring unique takes on everyone from Coltrane, Hancock, Hubbard and Mingus, to Traffic, Zappa, Steely Dan, The Beatles…and back again!—with funky hot originals sprinkled in—Fat Rabbit takes you on an exciting trip down a musically colorful rabbit hole.
Boulder/Nederland, Colorado-based Fat Rabbit features three original members from the hot ‘groove grass’ band Shanti Groove—off the national touring road and now playing way outside the jamgrass box; a sax player who has appeared all over the Front Range with bands the likes of Great American Taxi, Yonder Mountain String Band, Leftover Salmon, Elephant Revival and so many others—who worships Coltrane, Garcia, Hartford, rock, jazz, bluegrass…; a fabulous ‘unknown’ Berklee refugee keyboardist whose multitude of styles have him in high demand all over the Denver area; and a soft spoken electric guitarist here by way of the Ft. Collins ‘Canine’ rock scene, whose hot classic guitar sound speaks worlds for itself.
Early versions of the Rabbit have appeared enticingly at the legendary Jazz N’ Grass cancer support benefits at the Fox Theatre in Boulder, CO, in 2005 and 2006. Sightings have been reported more recently all around the Nederland area at virtually any venue or event one can name. The six-headed, fuzzy furry friend has been encountered down below at the Trilogy (now B Side), the Mountain Sun, the D-Note and around the fabled ‘Quixotes picnic grounds.’ In December 2008, Fat Rabbit appeared as part of the sold-out Mark Vann Foundation Holiday Benefit Concert at the Boulder Theater, to resoundingly positive response.
