"Top Shows to See This Week: Fiat"

If you’ve never really gotten into jazz, here’s your opportunity. Kansas City experimental jazz group Fiat performs Monday at the Record Bar, 1020 Westport Road. A listen to the band’s 2008 album Ambrosia Vein might change your idea of jazz altogether. With songs like “Tom Cruise’s Mushroom Army” (a shuffling, melancholy number) and “Poison Ourselves for Fun” (a bouncy, rockish song reminiscent of recent Radiohead) you won’t be bored. - Ink Magazine

Bio

Fiat is a five piece instrumental band from Kansas City. We are influenced by jazz musicians from Chick Corea to Dave Douglas, classical composers from Bach to Shostakovitch, jam bands from the Grateful Dead to MMW, and pop musicians from Steely Dan to Radiohead. Our music uses dance like grooves with complex rhythms, cerebral harmonies, and tuneful melodies while keeping the jazz tradition of improvisation alive. We melt faces with energy, draw tears with tone, provoke laughter with form, and inspire movement with groove. We are well educated but have freed ourselves from the shackles of classicism, ready to take on the world one stage at a time.
