"Fifth Story Has Big Plans For Future"

When children are little they fantasize about being police officers, firemen or rock stars. For three young Duncan men they have made their rock star dreams come true.

Joel Parks, Tremaine Wade and Lucas Gillette are all juniors at Duncan High School and make up the local band Fifth Story.

These three young rockers have been playing together for five years.

We decided to start up our band in 2004,” Wade said. “We all love to play and write music and wouldn’t dream of doing anything else.”

The name Fifth Story came up before the band’s first performance at the Duncan Junior High Talent Show.

“We decided together on the name Fifth Story when we were in fifth-grade,” Wade said. “We started as Fifth Story and we will stay Fifth Story.”

Wade says that Fifth Story considers themselves a Funk-Rock band. They play their own original songs with lyrics written by Parks and music written by the entire band.

The band says that they have had many different influences.

“We have each been influenced by different genres like rock, funk, blues and progressive,” Wade said. “We each bring something different to the table with our different interests.”

Fifth Story has performed all across Oklahoma including Duncan, Marlow, Norman, Oklahoma City, Stillwater and Midwest City. Their next stop is at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Simmons Center.

Also performing at the concert will be rappers Mr. Lil Joker and Profit, Aslan, a local band out of Marlow and American Idol contestant, Paiga.

Fifth Story has recorded a self-titled album and will have them on sale during the concert.

As of right now the band has not scheduled any shows after Saturday, but look to be in the studio to record their next album.

Wade says that in the next five years he sees himself still doing what he loves.

“I plan on going to the Academy of Temporary Music after I graduate and I think Joel and Lucas will be joining me,” Wade said. “We just want to take this as far as we can and never stop.” - The Duncan Banner

"Developing Style"

A group of three Duncan High School students will be joining more than 200 performers Tuesday through Sunday at the Oklahoma Arts Festival.

The three freshmen, Lucas Gillette, Joel Parks and Tremaine Wade, comprise the band Fifth Story, a self-described conglomeration of musical mash featuring some rock, funk and reggae elements.

“It’s our own style of music,” Gillette said.

The group received its start nearly three years ago, but its musical background goes back further than that.

Both Gillette and Wade began their musical training on the piano. Though neither has stuck with the piano, each has found a different instrument. Gillette plays bass and sings backup vocals while Wade puts out a solid beat on the drums.

Parks, Fifth Story’s guitarist and lead vocalist, also had an early training in musical arts, growing up surrounded by harmonious tones. His family, he said, is its own bluegrass band where everybody plays an instrument.

For the band, music isn’t just an after-school hobby. Each player said he would like to pursue music as a career, but for the time being they’re satisfied with making music that brings joy to their lives.

“We like to make our songs entertaining to us so we won’t get bored with them,” Parks said. “Hopefully, we’re entertaining the crowd at the same time.”

The band writes its own music and lyrics, an activity that has brought it closer together and helped it to grow.

“It’s always fun to play a song, but when you get together with people and collaborate, it feels good,” Parks said. “It’s kind of like your own project you’re working on.”

Wade echoed Parks’ sentiments. “I like playing music,” he said. “Every time we play and make up new things, it feels cool. It also feels good to get up on stage and play music when the people enjoy it.”

And for Gillette, writing is prime ground for something new to develop.

“I just like the creativity part, how you can just be sitting there and something comes to you,” he said.

What they’re doing seems to be working. The band had to send in a demo disk before being selected to play at the festival, which will be its largest venue yet.
