Bio

Lance and Dan started playing under the name Filling Space in 1999 with Lance on drums and Dan on bass.
Since then we have had several lineup changes and moved to Iowa City before settling with Lance on drums, Greg on bass, Sean on guitar and Dan on guitar in 2003. We then took a 4 year hiatus, reforming in 2006 stronger than ever with Dan on keys.
We are working vigorously on our new sound, re-working older songs to fit into the new groove, writing, and recording music. So far we only play in the mid-west headlining and opening in different clubs, venues, and bars. We have opened for New Monsoon, Cornmeal, Family Groove Company, Drums and Tuba, The Hackensaw Boys, Aswah Greggori, Wookie Foot, and Swivel Hips Smith, as well as enjoying stage time with a number of local bands and musicians. The Filling Space sound can be described as a dense, lush sound with driving rhythms and explosive, boisterous climaxes. Filling Space has a little something for everyone as we play an inclusive variety of music blending motifs from "Jam" band sound to bluegrass, dance, rock, country, funk, indie, punk, blues, and jazz, all of which reflect the different musical personalities of each member. We blend structured meat-and-potatoes organic songcraft with complex, frenzied, emotive, improvisational jams creating a musical matrix where everyone is filling space.
Our influences include A.D.D., The Universe, Allman Brothers, Grateful Dead, Old Crow Medicine Show, Frank Zappa, NOFX, Bright Eyes, Jimmy Smith, Jelly Roll Morton, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Medeski, Martin, and Wood, Chili Peppers, Blind Melon, Willie Nelson, Government Mule, Joey DeFrancesco, Pat Metheny, Ween, Derek Trucks Band, Primus, Widespread Panic, Moe., Phish, Leftover Salmon, Yonder Mountain, All world and traditional music, the Blues, Bluegrass, Jazz, Classical, Folk, and any other genre that we've forgotten to mention...this list could go on forever!
