"Fresh Faves: Batch 71"

I’d like to think we could have guessed that FIM were a band from LA just from the way they sound, sing and construct their songs. The sharpest music is always to be found on the edge, yet – whether your measure is of rage, outrage or just downright oddness – down the years, compared to UK bands, it’s often the Americans who have had, erm, the edge. British cities from Oxford to Cardiff, Sunderland to Glasgow all have their own thriving soundscapes – yet the cheap beatbox, slack megaphone vocals and choppy rhythm guitar of Fast Cars is not the kind of noise you’d expect to emerge from any of them. It’s the opening tune on FIM‘s 7-track EP Alien Beach Party available on limited 12? vinyl via their Bandcamp. - Tom Robinson - BBC Radio 6 Music

"MM SHORTS 451: FIM"

LA based punk band Fim has recently released a 7 song EP called Alien Beach Party.

Check out the first single, the brilliant Fast Cars all choppy, needling guitars, jerky percussion and and WTF vocals. Then try the equally good, though more frantic and tenser Shit God Damn.

Highly recommended. Buy the EP from Bandcamp here.

"Fim, ‘Fast Cars’ – Free MP3 Download"

Los Angeles-based rock band Fim can be easily described in one word: demented. These guys are pretty good at bending your perception of melody by putting chords and words in places that they don’t belong.

In fact, their new album, ‘Alien Beach Party,’ is pretty much an interstellar celebration of sand, sun and the oddities that drive the California four-piece. Their latest single, ‘Fast Cars,’ begins with a list of motor vehicles — from Maserati to Honda — before changing pace and completely flipping its logic.

It’s a constant guessing game that encourages repeat listens and a few head scratches. Even the chorus features two counter chord progressions, mixing together minor suspended chords with major-key jamming. It shouldn’t work, but for some reason it totally does.

“‘Fast Cars’ is kind of dark, but with a great pop sensibility,” Fim’s Nick Biddle tells Diffuser.fm. He’s right. Download this oddball rocker below, and enjoy something new. - Diffuser.fm - Cameron Morales

"Fim’s ‘Fast Cars’ Wins August 2013 Crucial Cut of the Month Contest"

It was a tight race, but Fim have driven their ‘Fast Cars‘ past the competition and claimed victory in our Crucial Cut of the Month poll for August 2013. The L.A. rockers grabbed 33.2 percent of the vote, edging out the Get Togethers, and while we dig both bands, we applaud Diffuser readers on their good taste.

Fim have a newish EP out called ‘Alien Beach Party,’ and that’s as good a description as any of their sound. ‘Fast Cars’ is slick and icy like Gary Numan’s similarly titled New Wave classic ‘Cars,’ but it’s more irreverent and less robotic, and the inventive music keeps you grooving and guessing in equal measure.

“‘Fast Cars’ is kind of dark, but with a great pop sensibility,” Nick Biddle told Diffuser.fm, hitting it right on the nose.

What inspired this ode to automobiles? What makes these West Coast weirdos tick? We hope to answer these and other questions in the coming days, when we holler at the fellas and conduct our Crucial Cut Interview, their prize, if you can call it that, for winning our contest. Stay tuned for their Q&A, and in the meantime, vote in our next Crucial Cut competition. - Diffuser.fm
