"Boulder-based singer-songwriter Finn O’Sullivan puts power in pop"

"While O’Sullivan — who started her musical journey at age 12 — maintains a low profile, her talent has not gone unnoticed.

The 2020 graduate of Boulder’s New Vista High took home the grand prize, in the category of folk, at the 2020 international John Lennon Songwriting Contest for her tune “When the Power Comes Back On.” The song’s music video, directed by eTown’s director of video production Zack Littlefield, was released this week.

In 2016, she won the eTown Handmade Songs competition for teens, then started working with a producer and stretching her artistry.

With a sweet-and-smoky vocal tone and undeniable skills on the guitar, piano and ukulele, O’Sullivan continues to build her fanbase. The 18 year old offers up refreshing tracks that stretch far beyond adolescent angst and manage to impress with layered lyrics, hints of quirk and attention-grabbing melodies.

Despite many venue closures, O’Sullivan played sporadic gigs in 2020, including one at Boulder International Film Fest’s drive-in movie series in September, ahead of a screening of the music docuseries “Laurel Canyon: A Place in Time.”

From her song “Leo,” inspired by David Lynch’s cult-classic show “Twin Peaks,” to “Lipstick Kisses,” a pop-rock track whose mention of “city lights” will have listeners longing for the days when we could roam maskless though the streets, O’Sullivan composes tunes that could easily get radio airplay with their catchy and clever aesthetic." - Daily Camera

Bio

Incredibly Unfamous award-winning indie pop-folk artist Finn O'Sullivan got her start performing Taylor Swift concerts in her bedroom while her parents were out.The Boulder, CO-based singer-songwriter picked up her first guitar at age 12 and hasn't put it down. In addition to guitar, Finn plays ukulele and piano, and her sound and style and voice have been compared to such artists as Regina Spektor, dodie, and Phoebe Bridgers. She says that songwriting is a way for her to express herself and talk about things that are important to her, which is sometimes hard for her to do in everyday conversation. She is "committed to creating things that other people can relate to," and her songs are a testament to this commitment.

Finn began working with a producer after she won the 2016 eTown Handmade Songs Competition in Boulder, CO, and she has been recording on her own and with producers since. She has released two EP's, and she released her first LP, When the Power Comes Back On, in 2020. The title song of that LP won the grand prize in the folk category of the John Lennon Songwriting Contest. Finn is currently pursuing a singer-songwriter/music business double major at The University of Colorado Denver.

With an Instagram tagline of “love, heartbreak and self-deprecation,” Finn writes about the universal themes of love and loss with both humor and compassion. Her songs are, indeed, relatable. In one of her songs, Finn muses about a habit of putting her "faith in things that tend to fall apart, secretly hoping I can turn it into art." And she’s quite adept at doing just that. Finn's turns of phrase and sometimes surprising chord progressions evidence a maturity in musicianship and a true poetic gift.  Her lyrics range from old soul to millennial quirky, and her clever, catchy tunes simply get stuck in your head.
