"Fiona Magee"

FOR someone currently living and breathing music, Fiona Magee isn’t ready to sign her whole life over to it.

Magee, 17, of Summerland Point, is working toward her higher school certificate music performances and if that is not enough, she is on the Coastfest bill this weekend.

And, when she’s done with her studies, she will be lugging the guitar over the border to play a series of gigs down Melbourne way as “a release after the HSC”.

But despite being in a good position to grab more than her 15 minutes of fame, the grounded teenager is hoping for a place in a social sciences degree at Newcastle University next year and sees herself as a social worker or human rights lobbyist rather than dedicated muso.

“It’s an outlet, a hobby,” she said. “I don’t really see myself as a commercial artist.”

Magee said though she loved to sing and write songs she couldn’t imagine having a long career in the industry and wouldn’t be satisfied with the “five minutes” of fame those putting themselves through the reality television show paces that programs like Channel 10’s Australian Idol offered up.

But, she is pretty excited about this weekend’s festival. Magee is on the bill with international artists The Judes and her favourite band Epicure.

“I am so excited. Epicure is one of my favourite bands.

“I have been influenced by a lot of Australian female singer/songwriters, but Epicure is my favourite band.”

Alongside preparing to play her Coastfest set and preparing for final exams, Magee has also been mixing the sound for Brackets and Jam North and supporting the artists entered for Coastfest’s Roots Rising competition.

Organiser Glenn Cannard said as soon as Magee finished her trial HSC exams earlier this year she was on board to sort entries for the inaugural competition.

The contest is open to young performers under the age of 21, like Magee, playing folk, world music and blues and roots.

Six finalists are selected to perform on Sunday, September 7, with the overall winner to perform on the main stage for the festival’s closing on Sunday afternoon.

The winner also gets 30 hours of studio rehearsal time, 20 hours of recording and mixing time and music industry advice.

Magee will be on the New Moon stage at the Point Wolstoncroft festival site on Saturday, September 6, at 12.30pm. - Central Coast Express Advocate

"Fiona's Bones Laid Bare"

FIONA Magee is singing about homosexuality, and politicians are listening.
The acoustic singer/songwriter from Summerland Point is among 32 fellow young Australia's in Canberra for the Heywire Youth Issues Forum.
"I wanted to try and make life a little bit easier for gay youth" she said.
"It's an ongoing issue that some people in society will never understand".
Magee's entry for the Heywire competition included her song Bones about being homosexual in regional Australia.
She will perform it and originals tomorrow night from 8pm at the Lass O'Gowrie Hotel, Wickham and on Saturday at The View Factory, Newcastle.
Heywire is a national competition run by ABC radio that seeks short personal stories in text, pictures, video or audio for a three minute radio piece about life in Australia.
While in Canberra this week the Heywire winners have spoken directly with federal ministers and have enjoyed a dinner at Old Parliament House.
Successful Heywire entries are broadcast nationally. - Newcastle Herald 05/02/2009
